Chapter 1: Persuasion

Chapter Text

Rain was falling in an erratic rhythm, leaving the guard wanting nothing more than for his shift to be over. Being charged with protecting some of the most dangerous criminals known to man was, to say the least, exhausting.
He’d heard stories of the horrific things the inmates had done. Bodies ravaged as if torn apart by an animal. People reduced to lifeless, frozen husks. Children driven mad by a dark, magical force. Boomerangs, of all friggin’ things, used as murder weapons. People who’d been burned alive. The kind of stories that would make any sane person want to stay as far away from the place as they possibly could.
So naturally, he could not help but feel annoyed when some random woman seemed to want to come into Belle Reve, when so many were likely desperate to get out.
“Belle Reve Penitentiary. Please state your business.” The man’s voice was stern and businesslike.
The woman, who was rather tall and wore a scarf over her hair, pursed her lips in response, a slight glimmer in her green eyes. “I don’t think that will be necessary,” she said with a knowing smile.
The man sneered, clearly not amused. Who the hell did this woman think she was? You couldn’t just waltz into Belle Reve, nor should you. This woman was either crazy or an idiot, though at this point he cared less for her safety and more for the fact that she was either trying to flirt with him or trying to annoy him. As if either of those things would persuade him to just let her pass. “Tell me what you’re doing here, or I swear I’ll-”
A sweet, floral scent in the air. A calm, distant smile on the man’s face. “Of course, ma’am. Have a nice visit.”
She chuckled to herself. “Oh, believe me, I will.”

There was a distinctive poise with which the woman carried herself as she walked past cell after cell. She ignored most of the prisoners; after all, she’d only come to look for one particular inmate, one who meant the world to her. One whom she’d grown tired of waiting for.
There was a sound like buzzing, and as the woman stepped through the halls, a ball of lightning emerged from a computer monitor, which was now displaying a host of error messages. The lightning began to take on a vaguely humanoid shape, and then gained a completely solid form. A woman with a rather punk appearance, complete with spiky electric blue hair, stood where it had been, an electric fury in her eyes.
“Remind me again why I agreed to this,” she muttered, a distinctive scowl on her face.
The other woman smiled, her red hair barely visible in the dim blue light. “It’s quite simple, Leslie,” she whispered. “Nobody’s ever successfully broken in or out of Belle Reve.”
Leslie scoffed, as though this were obvious to her. “Yeah, no shit, Ivy. I’m not stupid. I remember you telling me that before we came here. So what?”
Ivy smirked; clearly even she could not contain her anticipation for what was coming. “So, if we succeed...you’ll always be remembered as the first.”
This seemed to convince Leslie well enough, because the grin on her face was positively devilish.

The faint sound of a leaking faucet in her cell was all it took to keep Caitlin awake. Not that she needed the extra help. The weight of her own misdeeds, combined with the deep hunger for warmth that lingered in her veins, usually did a pretty good job of disturbing her sleep, and when she finally did drift off, she could usually expect a few nightmares.
Yet the arrival of another sound caught her attention- one which was decidedly not a dream. It made the young woman stir as she brushed a strand of silvery-white hair away from her face. It left her hunger feeling amplified, her primal instincts resurfacing. Yet it also filled her with an equally primal sense of fear. If Waller found out about this...she, Harley, and June were as good as dead. All their dreaming, the bonds they'd formed, the support they'd offered each other, would have been in vain.
Footsteps. Footsteps accompanied by warm heat signatures.
Somebody was outside her and the other’s cells. Someone who wasn’t supposed to be.

Notes:

This is based on the comics, not Arrowverse. As such, Caitlin Snow does not have any sort of multiplicity or dissociative traits; she is *always* Killer Frost, and this entails that she must absorb heat from another person in order to keep herself alive.
