Chapter Text

The rain danced on my window, it's feet making tiny pitter patters that I could not stop from invading my mind. I looked up from my book and stared out of the window and into the falling droplets of life. I place my book on the floor and push the window ajar. I carefully poke my index finger out of the window and as soon as the rain makes contact with my skin, it evaporates. I quickly retract my finger and look down at the rest of my hand. Although my index finger was now cooled, the rest of my hand was engulfed with dancing flames. The fire slowly crept up through my index finger and swallowed it whole. I closed the window to my house and opened my bedroom door.

I walked down the stairs, where all the pictures and paintings of the many fire spirits before me lay. The spirits in the pictures danced so freely around wood and coal, I felt a twinge of jealousy. They did not fear the rain. The fiery footprints I left on the stairs on my way down crackled behind me, a constant reminder of my limitations holding me. I stand in front of the front door and place my hand on the metal. I drag my shaking hand to the doorknob and use my other hand to force it open. I look out into the pouring showers, and up at the crying clouds.

My foot guides itself out into the danger. The water slowly overwhelms my foot and it is no longer burning. It becomes a lump of dark, flammable ore. My other foot follows in the first foot's path and the same happens. I close my eyes and take a deep breath. The air fuels me, and stokes me even more. I leap out into the open, my entire body taking the dive. My heart sinks as I do so and my stomach feels as if it's holding back an intense convulsion. I feel the rain. I feel it on my back, on my shoulders, on my head. My entire body had been extinguished and a new person stood in the rain, removed from their old name. Their old label. No longer was I a fire spirit.

I was me.
