The Monster in the Sky

Summary:

A thunderstorm is raging outside, and Luke needs his father.
In memory of David Prowse (1935-2020).

Work Text:

Little Luke sat up in his bed, unable to sleep and scared of the monster that lurked outside the house.
"Go away," he cried. "Why won't you leave me alone?"
Anakin often told him that monsters were the things of myth and folklore, and there wasn't much for him to fear.
But tonight, the monster was real, and it brought rain that sounded like pebbles hitting his window and thunder that roared in the night sky.
"I want my daddy," the little boy sniffled.

A giant shadow fell over his room, but Luke wasn't afraid. He knew who it was.
As if he had heard his child asking for him, Anakin appeared at the side of his son's bed. A man who stood at 6'7" and had huge muscles would probably be a scary sight in the dark, but he was a gentle giant, and nobody knew that better than Luke and all the other neighbourhood kids.
He had sensed that something was not right.

"It's okay," he whispered. "It's okay to be scared."
Luke launched himself into his father's arms and gripped onto him for dear life.
"It's okay; it's okay. Everything will be fine."
"Make it go away, please!"
"I can't make it go away, but it will go away. Maybe the sky had a terrible day and needs to let go of its frustration. I'm sure it will feel better in the morning if it brings out the sun."
The sound of his father's voice gave him a sense of reassurance. It was a contrast to his appearance, but it complemented his gentle personality.
The rain gradually calmed down, and the thunder was reduced to mere rumbling. Luke eventually fell asleep, and the storm faded to the back of his mind.

Luke woke up in the morning to see the sun shining through his window. Dad was right; the clouds were only having a bad day.
