Work Text:
kaoru exited the bathroom after a refreshing shower, now wearing comfortable shorts and a t-shirt that he considered to be pajamas. he was worn out from the day's idol work, and he was looking forward to some time to unwind.
what day was it today?
ah, it was saturday.
as in shark saturday. that meant that kaoru's favorite marine life documentary special would be on soon.
but kaoru wasn't the only enjoyer of shark saturday. nagisa ran, his roomate, was also an avid fan.
kaoru searched for the remote to the tv in their dorm and switched through the channels. he found that the last few minutes of a different program was playing, so that gave him time to prepare snacks.
kaoru went into the kitchen to microwave some popcorn. when it started popping, he heard the quiet voice of nagisa ask, "ah, is it shark saturday today?"
it was almost funny hearing such an elegant, serious voice pronounce the comical title.
"yep, it sure is," kaoru answered with a smile, removing the popcorn from the microwave.
nagisa had set out blankets and pillows for the two of them on the floor, so they could sit comfortably in front of the tv. it was endearing to see how excited nagisa got for shark saturday, as he usually had a calm and stoic disposition.
kaoru thanked the other for arranging the blankets and pillows as he got comfortable, putting the bowl of popcorn between them.
kaoru noted that yuta wasn't in the dorm at the moment. yuta was probably hanging out with his brother and their friends; it wasn't uncommon for him to come back to the dorms for the night a little later than nagisa and kaoru. whenever yuta was around, though, he'd also take part in watching shark saturday from time to time.
the last of the commercial break had finally finished, and shark saturday began with its usual obnoxious intro. kaoru found it tacky, yet enjoyable nonetheless.
nagisa was next to him, watching the screen with stars in his eyes. this was one of the things kaoru enjoyed most about saturday nights at the dorm. there was something special about nagisa's face alight with wonder as he asked questions about types of sharks and their lives underwater. kaoru would answer them with ease, feeling privileged to be able to teach the clearly intelligent and well-read nagisa ran anything at all.
okay, so maybe not all of kaoru's attention was on the show. but that was alright, he already had enough shark and marine life facts stored in some part of his brain as it was.
today, however, nagisa was a little quiet. kaoru didn't mind--the narrator's voice filled the silence as nagisa observed coral reefs and ocean environments on the screen.
kaoru tried to focus on the show as well, but it was like his eyes were trying to shut themselves. work today must have drained him more than he thought.
"kaoru-kun? you look a bit tired. would you like me to turn off the tv so you can sleep?"
kaoru faced nagisa, realizing the other had apparently shifted his glance away from the tv. perhaps the look in nagisa's eyes was a bit fond, or perhaps kaoru's tired brain made that up.
yawning, kaoru answered, "it's fine, you can keep watching."
nagisa chuckled. "you don't look comfortable at all. are you planning to sleep on the floor? you don't have a blanket covering you, and if you used the one you're laying on top of to cover with, then the floor would be cold beneath you."
"i don't think i can make it back to my bed, i'll probably fall over if i stand up. i'm good here, though, i'll make do."
twirling a strand of his long white hair in his fingers, nagisa contemplated kaoru's half-coherent response. "would you like my help? i can try to make sure you don't fall."
kaoru sleepily grinned. "nah, it's fine. don't trouble yourself.
"hmm... if that's what you want, then..." nagisa trailed off with a frown. "would you mind coming a bit closer?"
a bit closer? kaoru was too tired to question why, but he did as he was asked. nagisa took his own blanket and draped it over kaoru.
"ran-kun...now you're going to be cold... share the blanket with me..." kaoru responded, the tiredness apparently getting to him.
nagisa agreed to it. cuddling up next to kaoru, he took a portion of the blanket for himself. "is this good?" he questioned, hoping kaoru was comfortable.
"yeah, it's good...ran-kun, you're really warm..."
nagisa lightly laughed at his tired muttering as kaoru cuddled closer in to him. he was a little surprised but not upset with this behavior, settling with running his hand through the other's hair.
something about this made nagisa's chest flutter with an unfamiliar feeling, which only intensified when kaoru put an arm over him. it was a pleasant feeling, though, so nagisa didn't resist.
to be warm and wrapped in kaoru's arms... nagisa quite liked it. the faint scent of kaoru's shampoo engulfed his senses as he listened to the other boy's light snoring.
kaoru had fallen asleep quite quickly.
shark saturday had been long forgotten about by this point. nagisa would've turned the tv off, but making sure he didn't disturb kaoru by suddenly moving was more important.
nagisa sighed, not knowing what to do with the mixture of feelings inside of him. an antsy sensation was keeping him awake.
when he would have sleepovers with hiyori, falling asleep was so easy. why was it difficult when it was kaoru?
the boy in question was completely oblivious to nagisa's internal turmoil, his features settled into an expression of peace. nagisa was honored that kaoru trusted him in his vulnerable, sleeping state.
perhaps they were closer than nagisa thought.
after a while of switching between staring at the ceiling, the tv that was still on, and kaoru next to him, nagisa finally began to feel the fog of sleepiness occupying his head. his muscles relaxed as he sunk into the blankets and kaoru's embrace. shark saturday became nothing but white noise that soothed nagisa into a comfortable rest.

after a while, yuta came home to the dorms. seeing the mess of blankets and tangled limbs illuminated by the light of the tv, he took out his phone and texted his brother.
yuta: help, my roomates are cuddling on the floor
yuta: i'd hate to wake them up
yuta: what do i do
