Can't Wait

Summary:

It was suddenly a lot more busy in Mondstadt's Knights of Favonious headquarters and Kaeya couldn't wait to finally take a break.

Work Text:

Another day has yet ended in the city of Mondstadt and a new one starts tomorrow. Even with the irregular amount of work today has given, the Knights of Favonious did not fail in accomplishing each of them whether it was for a lost cat or to bring deliveries from one place to another.

Unfortunately, what was given to a certain Cavalry Captain was the paper work.

“It really took that long?” Kaeya said as he finally stood up from his seat for god knows how long he sat for the day and stares at the wall clock. It was midnight.

“Huh, and I was even planning to go for a drink too.” He silently sulks as he locks up the office and headed to his room. He should at least get some sleep for now. The light and steady foot steps causes him to go deep in thought though the thump of each step causes him to feel a little more drowsy. ‘I really need to hurry back, my head’s starting to ache again.

He finally reaches his room and as he opened it after a few tries of inserting the key in the door, he was greeted with an unexpected scene.

Books seem to be scattered on the floor with a few papers lying about. ‘A gust of wind would’ve surely caused an even bigger mess ’ he thought to himself. Crayons of different colors also have found their way in here together with an opened notebook, some pencils, and a brown backpack.

He squints his eye through the darkness of the room only using the moon's rays as his only source of light. He can make out a shape of something...fluffy ? And small. 'That's..Dodoco.'

After quickly examining the scene, he averts his eyes to the middle of the room where a small, red figure sleeps peacefully.

He brings a hand to his forehead and sighs, “Oooh right, I promised to play with her once I got back. Should’ve told one of the knights to send her a message that I’ll be late.” He quietly walked towards where Klee was sleeping soundly on the floor, careful to stepping on the books and papers that would create any noise. Once he successfully reached her, he gently picks her up, cradling her in his arms.

How peaceful ’ he thought as he slowly walks backward to where his bed was so he could sit. As he sat down, he began to softly sing a lullaby. It was something he picked up after the many times Klee begged him to sing something to her and after hearing it, she commented with that cute smile of hers how "it helped keep monsters away from her dreams" at night.

The dim light from the moon illuminating the room makes the moment all the more comforting, calm, and still like time just stopped right there with his singing filling the whole room.

He closes his eyes, still singing the sweet tune. ‘Haha, things would be so much better if it just stayed like this..

“If it just..—“

“...stayed..l-like..this..”

“Kaeya—“

“Kaeya, please, you have to—“

“Shhhh,” He shushes the people around him, their cries and begs piercing through his ears making his head throb more as he continues to kneel on the hard, rocky ground, letting the dirt and small pieces of debris dig through his skin. Kaeya was clearly in pain from kneeling down for far too long but he didn’t care for shit.  He didn’t care if his wounds weren’t patched up yet and bleeding, he didn’t care if his throat was sore and dry from the cold air, he couldn’t wait any longer.

He couldn’t wait—

“Kaeya, she’s already—“

He made a promise,

“..I-I said..keep your voice down..Jean.”

He continues to painfully sing the lullaby as he holds Klee’s lifeless body, coughing and stuttering at almost every line. Hot, fat tears start to flow down his cheeks, dripping onto the cold ground as he still tries to sing, holding Klee as close as possible.

'My singing, it scared the monsters away, right? You were scared of them, right? That means, I won't ever leave your side and you won't leave mine,'

'..Right? '

“...She’s cold.” And that’s all it took for Jean to finally stop her begging.  “She’s sleeping.” Kaeya says as he pulls Klee’s cold body even closer, his grip on her getting tighter.

“I promised I’d play with you once I got back...”

“...please, come back.”
