Dreaming of a Better Life

Summary:

Denki Kaminari has always had strange dreams. I mean who wouldn’t blame him thinking of everything he’s been through. Maybe these dreams are the key to staying on track and not falling into the deep end.

Chapter 1: An Introduction

Chapter Text

The shattering of broken glass and the screams from his father is one of his earliest memories. The ringing of loud thumping resounded in the same house that Denki wanted to call ‘home’. Petering around the corner he looked down to spot his mother and lifeline on the ground.

“Mom-m..” Looking down at his mother a dark scarlet pool flowed from under neither her. Looking up he spotted his father carrying away his mother and getting an old rickety mop and a bucket of water with a few bubbles in it. Looking at his father Denki’s breathing hitched and caught on his throat think what that monster would do to her lifeless figure.

“Well? I’m not going to clean it up myself you dunce.” Denki’s father said harshly as he shoved the mop and the water bucket in his face making it splash everywhere.

Luckily none of the water fell on him. This strange fear of the liquid started when he received his quirk. Looking down again at the blood starting to slowly seep into the tattered rug on the ground. Cleaning up the mess that his father made and letting a few silent tears caress his solemn face he thought of something he dreamed of ever so often… becoming a hero.

Idiots like you can’t become a hero. You couldn’t even save your mother what makes you think you could save others, you coward. I k-know but I could at least try! I want to be able to save others. How could you save anyone, you are just a small little mouse. I mean I g-guess you’re right. I always will be right of course a dumbass like you can’t even think of something smart for once. Denki stayed quiet to his inner thoughts and returned to the bucket that was now full of red-tinted water. Trying to not start hyperventilating over remembering that your mother the one that always read him bedtime stories. The one that he played heroes and villains with. The one who introduced him to different languages, English and a little bit of French and Russian, (which you still try to practice and are almost fluent in English). Was gone forever. With Denki’s brain moving 1000 miles per minute trying to not think of when his father if would come back Denki rushed up towards your room and closed the door. Turning around to face his bed monsters with black gunk seeping out of their pores started murmuring coming towards the shorter boy. The monsters rushed towards him making him scream bloody murder…

Denki Kaminari a now 14-year-old boy woke up screaming the memory dream of his own mother’s death. Shaking, tears streamed down his face before he could even breathe his father slammed his door open leaving a dent in the wall not to say that there already was one there.

“Shut up! No food today for waking me up at 4 am! Your lucky I’m too tired to mess with you, you brat!” With a slam, his door was closed shut and then was eventually locked. This has happened way too many times for him to count at this point it didn’t even scare him. He always kept extra food and water underneath his bed for when this happened.

Thankfully it was Sunday and he didn’t have school till tomorrow. Not to say he hated school but he didn’t like it. He struggled in math, history, and science. Making him the lowest graded student in his middle school class. But overall he thought that he was pretty liked by others and could consider himself popular though he didn’t like anyone from his school. Being the laughing stock class clown of his school and seemingly his whole life he stuck with that persona for way too long now. Not that he minded always being happy and therefore others it felt draining having to put on a fake smile and pretend, (it was pretty good too because he’s been doing it for a while!) While he couldn’t say that the insults from his peers did hurt a little but he was pretty numb to be called dumb because he is, isn’t he? Even though he was good at learning languages and loved reading he was still dumb as dirt Denki and that would never change.

But one of the bigger issues he’s been dealing with is getting into U.A. The school that would solve his problems and makes his dream of saving others a reality! Training his quirk seemed to be quite a challenge, Even though he could be so powerful and not a weak coward the drawbacks made everything worse. Short-circuiting wasn’t fun. When he was in this state he felt like he couldn’t control himself and was trapped inside his mind. When it went into this state the first time he would have dreams of being stuck like that forever not being able to escape the darkness that surrounded him. But everyone always found it funny and that was his purpose, make others happy so they aren’t disappointed in you but you still knew they were. So he kept that part to himself. But when he did want to train he would sneak out of his house when his dad was drinking his days away and went to an empty field. He would stay there for hours on end trying to at least have a little control over it but it only helped so much.

He had a couple more months till the entrance exam and spent most of the time trying to study. He had a hard time remembering how to do math equations and google only did so much to help him. Though he did feel confident on the English portions since he’s very familiar with it.

Looking around Denki’s room was fairly normal. With a couple of bookshelves piled with some of his favorite novels and a few works of poetry from when he was a little younger. His bed was flat and hard not the most comfortable thing to ever sleep in but he had to deal with it. Once he tried asking his dad for a new pillow and was met with a punch in the gut. That was last week and the bruise was still there but he didn’t think that anything broke though. His dad avoided his face for the fact he wouldn’t want to be caught but I doubt even if he was nobody would say anything.

Denki did have a history with his dad not being a great parent or even a parent at all. But he was still grateful that he had a place to stay and would sometimes have food. Denki turned back to study guides to help him prepare for the exams. Losing focus and scrolling on his phone for a couple of hours but he was still able to get a little work done! He wasn’t sure if he obtained any pieces of information from the many packets but hey he tried! Looking at the alarm clock on his bedside table it read 10 P.M. He had been studying for that long! Gathering up all of the material he stacked it in a neat pile in the corner of his room. Jumping on the worn-out bed it gave a loud creak and he settled down pulling the small blanket on top of him. Now for the hard part with all of the access energy and sparking from his quirk he had pretty bad insomnia. It attempted to rest his eyes but to no appeal, he couldn’t. So he offered to flip to face the fall of his boring room and let his mind wander…

Nourishing bright green grass flowed softly in the wind tickling the sides of his face. Waking up he noticed that he was in a white-colored dress wondering the mysterious place he was in. The sky always seemed to be shining with a permanently vibrant blue color one you would see in a fantasy land. The evergrowing vines and flowers stood swaying in the breeze talking in the warmth around them. Running further there was a gigantic forest with tall fully blooming trees. Making his way through the forest he noticed that it seemed to start getting darker almost to the point where he couldn’t see anything. Flickering his quirk on in off trying to see where he was going he tripped on a rocked. With a grunt, he pulled himself to his knees and brushed the dirt off of them. Looking around he saw a dark figure wiz by him. Starting to panic he started running off in front of him never turning back. Though this seemed to be a dream Denki couldn’t help but think it meant something...
