Work Text:
Patton giggled as the firm hands on his shoulders guided him forward, his vision obscured by a strip of fabric over his eyes.
“Where’re we going, Jan?”
Warm breath tickled the skin around Patton's ear as Janus chuckled. “You’ll find out soon enough, sweetie.”
“Why am I blindfolded?”
“Because tonight’s date is a very special one, and I want you to be surprised. So, no peeking.”
Patton pouted, but allowed his boyfriend to continue guiding him forward. Several paces later, Janus gave his shoulders a gentle squeeze; a signal to stop.
“Stairs, sweetie.”
Patton bit his lip. He doubted he’d be able to walk down steps while blindfolded.
“Don’t worry, I’ll help you down,” Janus said, as if reading Patton’s mind. “If you trip, I’ll catch you, okay?”
“...Okay.”
Janus slid one of his hands into Patton’s, the other remaining on his boyfriend’s shoulder. Patton allowed himself to be guided down the stairs, and he immediately sensed that the ground beneath his shoes was no longer concrete.
“Alright. Now, I want you to take off your shoes for me.”
“Why?”
“Just trust me, sweetie.”
After a moment of hesitance, Patton removed his shoes by the heels, and his bare feet settled onto an unfamiliar surface. It was coarse, rough, and something grainy was rubbing between his toes.
“Janus, what—“
“You want me to take off your blindfold?”
Patton nodded, and he felt the knot at the back of his head untie. The blindfold fell from his eyes, and nothing could’ve prepared him for the sight he was met with.
“Janus…”
Janus took Patton’s hand. “You mentioned you’d never been to the beach before,” he explained. “I thought I’d fix that.”
Patton’s gaze drifted out to the ocean, where the crystal clear water was reflecting the glow of the moon and the many stars twinkling in the night sky.
Janus gave Patton’s hand a gentle tug. “Follow me.”
Patton allowed Janus to lead him across the sand, and eventually they reached a spot where a towel was being held down by a picnic basket. The couple sat down on the towel, and for a moment they simply listened to the sound of the waves lapping against the shore, enjoying each-other’s company.
“Now, I know this isn’t as extravagant of a date as you may have expected from me, so I brought food as a means of apology,” Janus said, gesturing to the picnic basket.
“Oh, Janus, you didn’t have to—“
Janus shushed Patton. “Hush, sweetie. I wanted to provide food, so I did. Plus, you’re already drooling over it.”
“What—“ Patton wiped his mouth only to discover it was dry. “Ohh, you slimy snake, you!”
Janus cackled. “Works every time.”
Patton reached over and lightly swatted Janus’ arm. The two of them laughed, and Patton’s gaze was then drawn to the picnic basket. Janus followed his boyfriend’s gaze and chuckled.
“Should’ve known you’d get hungry fast. Let’s eat.”
Patton snuggled closer to Janus’ side, smiling when Janus hugged him just as close with the arm he’d slung over his shoulders. They’d finished eating a while ago, but they’d decided to stick around and admire the view for just a little longer.
“You alright, sweetie?”
Patton hummed an affirmative.
Janus laid his head on top of Patton’s and exhaled contentedly. He turned his head to plant a kiss in Patton’s hair and chuckled when he squirmed.
“Janus,” Patton whined.
“What?” Janus asked innocently.
“You know what.”
“I have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about.”
Patton buried his face into the crook of Janus’ neck, his eyes half-lidded. His breathing began to slow, and Janus smiled softly.
“Tired, sweetie?”
“Mm.”
Janus moved his hand from Patton’s shoulder and began running his fingers gently through the tired one’s hair.
“You can sleep if you want. We’re not expected to be home for at least another hour.”
“Okay. Wake me up when we have to leave?”
“Of course.”
