1.
Buck pulls to a stop outside the school. He watches as Eddie runs from the car, up the steps, and into the building. Through the glass doors, he sees a kid with crutches smiling widely as Eddie comes into view. Eddie drops to his knees and scoops the kid into a hug. Eddie stands up and turns around. Now facing the door, Buck sees the equally wide smile splitting Eddie’s face and all the air in his lungs leave in an instant. The small feelings he’s been having for the man rush to the surface and he has an urge to run in there himself and hug the pair. It takes a few seconds for the blond to breathe normally and when he does Eddie meets his eyes. The brunette’s smile softens into a grateful look. Eddie braces his son on his hip and thanks the teacher that stayed back waiting for Christopher’s father. When he sees Eddie start making his way to his car, Buck gets out to meet them. Eddie walks out of the school and reaches Buck’s Jeep in no time. Buck smiles at the huge grin still etched on the boy's face.
“Chris, this is Buck. He works with me at the 118.” Chris turns his head to look at the stranger. “Buck, this is Christopher, my son.”
“It’s nice to meet you Chris.” Buck feels Eddie’s free hand rest on his shoulder, so Buck wraps his own arm around Eddie’s waist. Buck sees Eddie blush a little under the street lights, but is pulled away when Chris talks.
“Buck, that’s a cool name.” Both men smile.
“So’s Christopher.” Eddie smiles proudly at the giggle that’s pulled from his son’s lips at the blond’s words. “My real name is Evan, but don’t tell your dad.” Buck’s voice drops to a whisper and he leans closer to Chris. "I don't think he knows Buck isn't my real name." Christopher laughs, making Buck smile. Eddie rolls his eyes.
"Just met and you're already plotting against me? What have I done?" Eddie asks. This only makes Chris and Buck laugh harder. "What do you say we guilt Buck into driving us home and then you go to bed?" Chris nods and then gives Buck puppy dog eyes. Buck smiles and ruffles Chris's hair.
"Of course I'll drive you home. I can't have my favorite kid walking home now can I?" Chris shakes his head, making both men smile. Eddie steps away from Buck a little, making Buck’s arm fall off his hip.
“This will be the one time you ride without a car seat, okay?” Chris nods and Eddie gets him settled in the back. Buck rounds the car and slides into the driver’s seat as Eddie does the same on the other side. “Thanks for this.” Buck smiles and looks at Eddie.
“No problem.” Buck taps Eddie’s shoulder. “I’ve got your back.” Eddie smiles.
“And I’ve got yours.”
2.
Buck can hear faint giggles when he approaches the Diaz household. He smiles to himself and unlocks the door. When he steps inside, he stumbles backward when Christopher runs past him. He smiles wider and toes off his shoes. He’s about to call out to Eddie, when the older Diaz runs into him. Buck lands on the floor and feels himself lose his breath. Eddie lands just next to him, still laughing a little. Eddie scrambles to his feet and holds out a hand.
“Sorry, Buck. I didn’t see you.” Eddie catches his breath while Buck heaves a little to get air back in his lungs. “Are you okay?” When Buck doesn’t take his hand, Eddie kneels down again. Buck nods.
“Yeah.” He wheezes. He takes another deep breath and talks once he’s able to breathe. “Just knocked the wind out of me. That’s all.” Eddie nods and stands up, holding his hand out again. Just as Buck stands up, Chris comes into the room again, still giggling.
“Buck!” He makes his way to the blond and hugs him once he gets there. Buck laughs and hugs Chris back.
“Hey buddy!” Eddie smiles as he looks at the two. Suddenly, they’re off to the living room and queuing up a movie before Eddie catches up.
3.
“Buck, you’re an idiot.” Eddie says when they’re in the station again. He had put his life at risk again and ran into the burning house when the youngest kid asked about the family dog. Buck went back in and brought it out only moments before the fire reached a gas line and the place blew.
“That’s been established.” Buck walks around the truck, only to be pushed against the side.
“What if you hadn’t made it out? Huh? How would I tell Chris that his best friend got himself killed because of a dog?” Buck’s face drops.
“I didn’t think of that.” Buck’s voice softens, but Eddie’s stays firm as the anger fails to leave him.
“Of course you didn’t. All you were thinking about was that dog and the little girl.” Eddie looks into Buck’s eyes, suddenly exhausted. “What if you hadn’t come out? What would I have done without you?” Buck furrows his eyebrows.
“What do you mean?”
“Dammit, Buck, I love you! I’m in love with you and you almost-” Eddie takes a rough breath before taking Buck’s shirt in his hands and pulling the blond roughly to his mouth. He kisses Buck passionately and Buck kisses back. It’s almost two minutes later when they part. Buck can barely breathe and Eddie is panting along with him.
“I love you too, Eddie.” Eddie laughs a little. “I’m sorry for running back in. It’s just, when that girl looked at me, I saw Chris. I pictured how heartbroken he would look if it were him and I had to do something.” Eddie’s heart squeezes. He sighs and rests their foreheads together.
“I’m not going to say it’s okay, because I’m still really irritated.”
“But?” Eddie smiles.
“But, I would’ve done the same thing.”
“Because you’re both reckless idiots.” Hen says from the loft. Buck and Eddie look over and see her, Chim, and Bobby leaning over smiling at them. Buck and Eddie blush.
“How long have you been watching us?” Buck asks.
“Not long. Just when the shouting stopped.” Hen answers. She nudges her head to the side. “Come on love birds, lunch is ready.” Buck and Eddie nod before looking back at each other smiling. Buck kisses Eddie once and slips out from between Eddie and the truck. He slaps Eddie’s ass once quickly.
“We’ll talk about this later.” He punctuates his sentence with a wink and walks up the stairs to the loft, leaving Eddie excited for the shift to be over.
4.
Eddie shuts the door and Buck latches onto his mouth again. They take off their shoes without parting and stumble through the house. Eddie pushes Buck against a wall, punching the air from Buck’s lungs for a brief moment. It only takes a second for him to take a breath again and resume the heated make out session.
“Eddie.” Buck says between kisses. The brunette pulls away and looks at Buck. The blond’s cheeks are pink and his lips are red and swollen. “How ‘bout we take this to the bedroom?” Eddie smiles and nods, taking Buck’s hand in his own.
“Happy one year.” Eddie says as he pulls Buck through the door.
“Happy one year.” Buck closes the door and quickly finds himself pushed against it. “I love you.”
“I love you too.” Eddie dives back in for a searing kiss.
5.
Buck drops his keys on the table by the door and sighs heavily. The weight of his 12 hour shift lifting when he sees the picture of Eddie and Chris hanging on the wall. He smiles to himself and kicks off his shoes before realizing how dark it is. Well, not dark per se, but dim. There’s an orange glow flickering in the entryway. Buck furrows his eyebrows and steps farther into the house. He drops his bag on the couch and sees a trail of rose petals scattered on the floor. A few butterflies enter his stomach and he follows the red petals. They take him to the kitchen, where there are candles and more rose petals. A vase of roses sit in the middle of the table. Buck looks around the room and realizes his boyfriend is nowhere to be found. He glances down, and notices a note on the table.
‘Go to our room and get changed
-Eddie’
Buck smiles and does as the note says, making a pit-stop at the couch to grab his bag. He walks to their bedroom and sees an outfit laying on the bed. He sets his bag on the bed and takes off his shirt, thankful he showered at the station. Buck strips to his boxers and then pulls on the dress pants and white button-up. He checks himself out in the mirror before leaving the room and walking back to the kitchen. This time when he enters, the food is set out and Eddie is standing next to the table. He smiles when he sees Buck and gives him a once over.
"You look amazing." Eddie says as he steps closer. Buck blushes.
"You don't look too bad yourself." Buck runs a hand through Eddie’s hair, making it flop a bit more. Eddie’s hair has grown out a little since they started dating, per Buck’s request. He said he preferred it to the length it was when they first met and Eddie couldn’t help but agree. His outfit matches Buck’s, only his pants are navy, not black. Eddie kisses Buck quickly and pulls out a chair for Buck to sit down. Buck blushes and sits. His eyes follow Eddie as he does the same on the other side of the table.
The couple digs into their dinner and talks about their day. Eddie tells Buck about his and Chris’s trip to the park, where they saw a dog and Chris proceeded to ask Eddie for one every time it popped back into his head. Buck vents to his boyfriend about the call that reminded him of Eddie’s first day and caused him to miss his boyfriend desperately for the rest of the shift. The story makes Eddie reach across the table and hold Buck’s hand for the remainder of their meal.
Once they’re finished with their food, Eddie stands up and stands next to Buck’s chair. Buck smiles up at the man and notices his nervous face.
“Babe, is everything okay?” Eddie doesn’t answer, he simply drops to the hardwood floor on one knee. Buck’s breath catches in his throat and stays there for a moment as Eddie looks up through his eyelashes.
“Three years ago we made a promise to have each others backs. In that time, we’ve been through a lot. You’ve helped me raise my son and become a better father and boyfriend. If you’ll let me, I’d like to have your back for the rest of our lives.” Eddie opens the box Buck didn't notice at first and reveals a silver band. “Evan Buckley, will you marry me?” Buck nods hastily.
“Yes Eddie! Of course!” Eddie smiles and slides the ring on Buck’s awaiting hand. They both rise to their feet and quickly envelope the other in a kiss.
“I love you.” Buck smiles and kisses Eddie again.
“I love you too.”
+1
Eddie glances around at everyone in the church. His friends and family are looking back up at him. The doors open and his heart jumps. He knows it’s not Buck, but the anticipation is killing him. Maddie walks through with Chimney’s arm linked through her own. They walk down the aisle and split once they reach the altar, Chimney standing next to Eddie and Maddie in the empty place. Next, is Hen and Karen. Hen stands next to Chim and Karen next to Maddie. Finally, Christopher. He walks down and tosses petals on the aisle. He was ecstatic when he heard Eddie and Buck were getting married and offered to be the flower boy. Buck said yes with a beaming smile. The music changes once Chris sits next to Pepa, who’s holding Jee-Yun. Eddie’s heart speeds up and butterflies fill his stomach. The doors open and suddenly, Eddie can't breathe. Buck smiles when his eyes reach Eddie’s. His tux is white with a blue flower on his lapel. Bobby walks with him towards Eddie. When Buck and Eddie announced their engagement, the first thing he did was ask Bobby to give him away. The man had said yes with tears in his eyes. Eddie meets them at the bottom of the stairs. Bobby hugs Buck before he places Buck’s hand in Eddies and squeezes Eddie’s shoulder.
“Take good care of him.” He whispers.
“I will.” Eddie smiles at Bobby. The captain nods and sits down next to Athena. Eddie leads Buck up to the altar and their friends.
The ceremony goes by quickly and emotionally. Both Buck and Eddie have tears in their eyes when they finally say “I do” and kiss, cementing their love, their bond, in front of the people they hold most dear.
Buck and Eddie sway to the slow song with Buck’s head on Eddie’s chest.
“I love you, Evan Diaz.” Buck smiles and looks up at his husband.
“I love you too, Edmundo Diaz.”
