Chapter Text
“Athena?” Bobby knocks on the bathroom door, “Athena... You’ve been in there a while. Are you ok?”
“Give me another minute.” Athena chokes out as she stares down at the pregnancy test in her hands.
“Athena, what’s wrong? What happened?” Bobby asks, his tone getting more and more concerned with every second that passes.
“I’m fine, Bobby.” Athena stands up and walks over to the sink. She leans down and splashes water over her face trying to wake up from the dream she was in. But it wasn’t a dream. She was pregnant, with Bobby’s child. Quickly, she shoves the pregnancy test into a drawer and stuffs the box into the trash can.
“Please. Tell me what’s going on.” Bobby begs as he leans against the door. Athena opens it, causing him to lose his balance. He catches himself with the door frame before falling onto her. “What happened?”
“I just didn’t feel well is all.” Athena lies as she looks into Bobby’s beautiful brown eyes.
“You’ve not been feeling well a lot recently... Are you alright? Do I need to take you to the doctor?” Bobby grabs her hands in his.
“I’m alright, Bobby. I promise.” Athena says as she gives him a hug, “I’m a bit tired though... I’m going to head to bed.”
“Alright. I’ll join you in a few minutes. I’ve just got to brush my teeth.” Bobby says, walking into the bathroom. He watches as Athena slowly walks off to their bedroom down the hallway. Still worried about her, he opens the medicine cabinet and grabs out his tooth brush and the tooth paste. He begins pacing as he brushes, trying to figure out what it could be that is bothering Athena so much, and then he sees it. The box in the trash can from the pregnancy test. “Oh my god.”
Frantically Bobby spits the toothpaste into the sink and rinses his mouth. Opening every drawer and cupboard to see if he can find anymore pregnancy tests. He crouched down and looks closely through the drawer of May’s make-up and finds the positive pregnancy test inside. He grabs it and runs to the bedroom where Athena is already in her pajamas about to climb under the covers.
“Bobby! What is it? Are you alright?” Athena asks as he stares at her with wide eyes.
“It’s May...” Bobby pants, “I... I think she’s pregnant.” Bobby holds up the pregnancy test and Athena’s eyes follow it, “What do we do, Athena?”
“Bobby...” Athena tries to calm him down.
“She’s only nineteen, Athena! She still has college to go to. She’s going to miss out if she has a baby right now.” Bobby rambles on.
“Bobby. Calm down. May is not pregnant.” Athena walks over to him and puts her hand on his arm.
“Then why was this in her drawer?” Bobby stares at the test in his hand.
“She’s not pregnant, Bobby.” Athena sighs.
“How do you know?!” Bobby walks to the bed and sits down.
“I just know.” Athena sits down next to him.
“Then who is? Is it one of her friends maybe? Or Maddie? They’ve all been here recently... Maybe they just stuck it in her drawer because they were scared?” Bobby rambles.
“No Bobby. It’s none of her friends, and I’m pretty sure Maddie wouldn’t hide it.” Athena says calmly.
“Then who’s pregnancy test is this?” Bobby looks at her, “No one else has been in our house except...”
“Except?” Athena asks after Bobby finishes the sentence with silence.
“Except... You.” Bobby stares at her in disbelief, “Athena... Is this... Is this your pregnancy test?”
“Bobby.” Athena looks down at the ground. He carefully placed two fingers under her chin and turns her to face him.
“Athena. Is this your pregnancy test?” Bobby asks in a soft, sweet voice. She blinks as tears start to form in the corners of her eyes before nodding. “You’re pregnant?”
“I’m pregnant...” Athena says quietly as she starts to cry.
“Hey... Hey... Don’t cry.” Bobby places his arm around her shoulders and pulls her close, “You’re pregnant.”
“Bobby... I’m sorry...” Athena wipes the tears dripping down her nose on her sleeve.
“Sorry for what?” Bobby looks at her with a sparkle in his eyes.
“I got off my birth control because I never thought I’d get pregnant at this age... I figured that it wouldn’t matter...” Athena tries to look away, but Bobby gently grabs onto her chin to keep her facing towards him.
“I never said I’m mad, did I?” Bobby let’s out a smile. Athena looks at him, confused.
“I thought...” Athena scrunches her eyebrows together, “I thought after what had happened that you didn’t want kids again...”
“I never said that either... I just never brought it up because I didn’t figure you would want kids again, considering as your oldest is going off to college in the fall... And your youngest is about to be an eighth grader.” Bobby says, “Athena, I’ve longed to have another baby. Fill that hole that Brook and Robert left. Obviously, never completely fill the hole, but at least mend it.”
“Bobby... Why didn’t you say anything? You should have told me.” Athena sighs.
“Would it have made any difference?” Bobby looks at her.
“I mean... Probably not...” Athena looks down.
“So... What are we going to do?” Bobby asks hesitantly, hoping she doesn’t answer the way he thinks she is going to.
“Are you asking if I want to keep it?” Athena looks up at him, Bobby nods slowly without making eye contact, “Bobby. You know my opinion on that... I would never get rid of one of my babies. Intentional or not, this is my baby. God obviously wanted us to have a baby, right? I mean you always say that God does everything for a reason, don’t you?”
“Yeah... You’re right...” Bobby lays back as a smile creeps across his face, “So, you’re saying that we are going to do this?”
“We’re going to do this.” Athena lays down next to him and wraps her arms around his waist.
“We’re going to have a baby.” Bobby stares at the ceiling, grinning from ear to ear.
“We’re going to have a baby.” Athena smiles.
“This explains the not feeling well.” Bobby let’s out a chuckle, “And the mood swings...”
“Mood swings? What mood swings?” Athena looks up at him.
“You’ve been moody for the past month and half at least... When’s the last time you had your period?” Bobby asks as she rests her head on his arm.
“...about two months ago.” Athena closes her eyes.
“Why didn’t you say anything?” Bobby asks.
“Bobby. I’m forty-five. I figured that was it. That I was done. I thought it was menopause.” Athena explains as Bobby runs his fingers through her hair.
