Chapter 1: Point in time

Chapter Text

Kim Junkyu, 21, a music major, believed in the concept of soulmates, though it may seem obscure to other people, he still believed in it. He often wonders what his soulmate is doing right now, or has anything bad or good has happened to him. With this, he always kept a journal full of stories and memories that he wanted to share with his soulmate once he meets him. But the funny thing is there is no certain way on how you can find your soulmate and how you can say that the other person is your soulmate. He thinks to himself that once he meets his soulmate he will know.

As the alarm goes off, Junkyu lazily goes out of his bed and into his study table. He opens his journal and writes.

08-02-2021 Koala’s Journal

A start of a new semester. Will I be able to become a scholar again this time? I don’t doubt it, well I am Kim Junkyu, there is nothing I can’t do. LOL. I will be meeting Jihoon later, my best friend. I hope I get to create new memories today and share them with you one day. Will I be able to meet you, my soulmate, today?

Junkyu lives at an apartment near their university to save money. His mom decided to let him live on his own since she knew that Junkyu can manage on his own and that she does not want to be a distraction to him. Junkyu and his mom has a very good relationship. Ever since his father died, Junkyu practically has to take care of his mom because she could not take the thought that she just lost her soulmate. Like Junkyu, his mom believed in the concept of soulmates, basically passing it onto Junkyu. He often asks his mom, how did she know that his father was her soulmate, and his mom would always say “I just knew”.

6:30 AM

Junkyu hurriedly walked towards the school gate to meet his best friend, Jihoon. While looking at a smiling Jihoon, a surge of memories came back to him. It was the summer of 2013. They were in a park in their village. It was their first meeting. The young Jihoon was staring blankly into the sunset while sitting on a bench when a curious Junkyu went to him and ask him if he was okay.

As an arrogant child, Jihoon shooed Junkyu away, “Mind your own business” he said.

“Uhm, I’ll just sit here and wait until you tell me if you are okay”. A persistent Junkyu said.

As time passes by, Jihoon looked at Junkyu with tears in his eyes.

“Have you ever lost someone important in your life?” Jihoon asked while a sudden tear fell on his eyes.

A startled Junkyu did not know how to act so he just answered the boy, “Well, I lost my grandparents last year, they were both very nice and I still miss them till now. Sometimes, I would think that they are still with me so that I would be less sad.”

Jihoon continued to look at Junkyu while tears flow down his eyes, not knowing how to stop them.

“Hey,” Junkyu said while patting the other’s back.

“I know, I am not in the place to tell you that everything will be okay, but eventually everything will turn out good for you” Now looking at the boy as well.

“Are you really just a kid like me?” Jihoon asked while wiping his tears. “I just lost my dad last month and I still don’t know what to do. I would wake up every day hoping that he will knock on my door and tell me to go to school and make sure to create memories that I can cherish for life” he continued. “I just--- I miss him. I miss him every day. I just wish I had more time with him.” Jihoon said while sobbing.

“You know, everything happens for a reason, right? Well, it may sound cliché but it is what it is. We just have to be strong to face everything life has to give us.” Junkyu said while staring at the sunset, still holding onto the boy’s back.

After their talk, Jihoon finally calmed down.

“It is getting dark now, we should go back,” Junkyu said breaking the silence.

“Yeah, we should, my mom is probably looking for me now,” Jihoon said while standing up. “Uhm, we’ve been talking for so long and we still haven’t known each other’s name” Jihoon continued while forming a smile on his face.

“Oh, you’re right, hahaha. I am Kim Junkyu, I am 13 years old, and I just recently moved.” Junkyu said while pointing to their house.

“Really? Hahaha. I am Park Jihoon, I am 13 years old as well, so friends?” Jihoon said while reaching out for a handshake.

“Friends.”
