Work Text:
namjoon woke up to one of his cats kneading into his chest. “ow, nemo,” he exclaimed in pain, “you have to stop doing that every morning, your claws are too sharp.”
“stop doing what?” jimin said while rolling over in bed to face his boyfriend of two years. he saw their cat sitting on namjoon's chest. “oh, is nemo making biscuits on you again?”
“yeah,” namjoon said with a huff as he sat up and gently pushed the fluffy orange cat off of his chest and onto the bed. “he’s been doing it every morning lately."
jimin stretched and stepped out of bed. “when cats do that it means they love you,” he replied, watching his boyfriend and the cat with adoration. “or he just likes your chest.” jimin looked down at namjoon’s bare chest. “i can’t blame him for that.”
namjoon smirked at his boyfriend's comment. “oh, here comes another one,” namjoon said, turning his head toward the door as he noticed tuna, their black and white tuxedo cat, sauntering into the bedroom. “he knows it’s time for his morning meal.”
jimin walked over to his closet to grab some sweatpants and put them on. “your breakfast is coming right up, your highness,” he said, bowing theatrically to tuna. “would you prefer chicken paté or seafood feast?”
tuna ignored Jimin and licked himself, cleaning his fur.
“i think that means he wants the paté,” namjoon joked, still petting the orange cat, nemo.
nemo and tuna were the first two cats that namjoon and jimin had met when they visited the animal shelter. they planned on adopting only one cat, as they had both grown up having pet cats at home, and felt like their apartment was empty with no feline friends around.
after looking at the cats at the shelter, they were told to pick two at a time to spend time with in a small room, to see how the cats behaved and if they would be a good fit for them. jimin, being the cat-lover that he is, saw this as a time to hang out with as many cats as possible. after he and namjoon had met all of the available cats at the shelter -- five to be exact (it was a small shelter) -- they had been tasked with choosing one cat to adopt and take home with them.
“ah, I love them all,” jimin had said to namjoon, as they discussed which cat to adopt. “i don’t know how we are supposed to pick just one.”
namjoon looked at jimin for a moment, thinking about what he had said. “maybe we don’t have to.”
"what do you mean?" jimin asked, confused.
"maybe we don't have to choose one. we could adopt all five of them."
jimin raised his eyebrows in surprise.
"i mean," namjoon interjected, "if we don't adopt them, who knows what could happen. it's not like people are lined up here to get a cat."
he was right, they were actually the only customers at the shelter.
jimin thought for a moment. “would you really be fine with getting more than one? not even more than one, but five.”
“sure,” namjoon answered, “it would definitely be a challenge, but i think it would be fun. we both grew up having cats at home, anyway, so it’s not like we’re going into this with no experience.”
jimin nodded. “yeah, and the apartment has felt sort of empty with just the two of us there. it would be nice to have a little family of cats to take care of." jimin paused for a moment before his eyes shot open in excitement. "we could be cat dads!"
namjoon smiled at his excited boyfriend. "cat dads."
after talking about their decision for a few minutes, the shelter employee came into the room. “have you made your decision yet?” she said excitedly, eager to know which cat would be getting adopted.
“we have,” namjoon said, turning to look at jimin. “we’ll take all five.”
