Work Text:

Deidara's phone beeps. He reaches out and presses the button on the side. It's Obito.

[18:39] Obito: "I'm waiting outside ❤️"

Deidara smiles as he writes a reply.

[18:39] Deidara: "Coming~"

He gets up from the sofa and rushes to put his shoes on. He finds Obito leaning on the bonnet of his car, hands in his pockets.

"You could have waited for me inside the car," Deidara says.

"Close your eyes," Obito replies and Deidara raises an eyebrow. "Actually, turn around and close your eyes."

Deidara does what he says and then feels how Obito covers his eyes with something. That scarf. Deidara realizes the moment he touches it.

"I see you have a surprise for me, hm."

"Did you ever doubt it?" Obito whispers, close to his ear.

Obito helps him getting in the car and fasten his seatbelt. The engine purrs and a few seconds later, the car starts moving.

"I've been thinking about our first date all day," Obito says.

"Me too," Deidara replies. "Hard to believe it’s been two years..."

"I know. The best two years of my life."Obito grabs Deidara's hand and he squeezes it.

"Don't crash though," Deidara says, releasing him.

"Not in our anniversary."

"Not ever, hm!"

Obito snorts.

"I remember how happy I was when you agreed to have a second date with me after how awful our first one was."

"You always say that. It wasn't awful," Deidara says. "It was different. Still fun. Definitely not your fault that the restaurant you wanted to take me to was closed that day."

"I gave you sore feet."

Deidara sighs.

"So what? It was a nice walk. You made me discover places I didn't even know they existed. In my own town."

"It was too hot."

"Yeah, it's called summer." Deidara giggles.

"I want to make it up to you with this date," Obito says.

"Hmm... I wonder what are you plotting."

"Who knows?" Obito singsongs.

Deidara sniffs the air.

"Smells nice," he says. "Like cake."

"Must be my new air freshener." Obito's voice sounds slightly high pitched.

"Really?" Deidara sticks out his tongue. "Where are we going? Aren't you going to give me a clue?"

"Nope."

"Come on, just one!"

"You'll see it by yourself soon." Obito laughs.

For Deidara it feels like an eternity until the car finally stops. He takes his seatbelt off and reaches for the scarf, but Obito grabs his wrist.

"Tsk, tsk. Not yet." Deidara groans but doesn't try to struggle. "Just wait a few more minutes. I can leave the radio on for you if you want."

"Okay."

Deidara can't stand his own curiosity any longer. He hears Obito get out of the car and crosses his arms. Then he hears the sound of the boot being opened and some rustle of bags.

"What are you plotting?" He mumbles.

"Don't peek," Obito replies.

"I wasn't going to, hm!"

A few songs later, Obito closes the boot and opens the door of the passenger seat.

"Right, take my hand but don't look yet."

"When can I take this thing off my eyes?" Deidara asks as he steps out of the car.

"I'll tell you when. Not long now."

Obito locks the car and they both start walking. The air feels cool and salty. Deidara hears the sound of waves.

"Are we at the beach?"

"Maybe," Obito replies and Deidara giggles.

The sound of waves becomes stronger as they step out of the tiled ground and into a gritty surface. Definitely sand, Deidara thinks and he starts humming a song that talks about going to the beach, just to forget about his own impatience. A while later, he steps on a rockier, uneven surface. Obito carries him in his arms.

"You're not gonna drop me, are you?" Deidara asks.

"I won't, trust me," Obito says.

Deidara notices that his voice sounds strained. The murmur of waves reaches its loudest peak, like they're crashing at their feet. Obito is panting.

"Are you okay?" Deidara asks.

"Y-yeah... Nearly there!" Obito leaves him on the floor not long after."Right Dei, this is it.You can look now."

Deidara takes the scarf off his eyes. The first thing he notices is the tent made with several long strips of wood and white silky blankets. There's a bouquet of flowers on top. Deidara follows the string of fairy lights that cascade down the tent. There's a big white tablecloth with cushions scattered around. And more fairy lights. Cakes and sandwiches beautifully arranged on a tray. Plates with fruit. A tiny wooden table with champagne, glasses and flowers.

"So this is what took you so long, hm." Deidara grins and looks at Obito.

"I wanted to give you the biggest surprise ever."

Obito offers Deidara his hand. Deidara takes it and they both sit on a cushion.

"It looks so cool," Deidara says, their hands still united. "This never crossed my mind when I was trying to guess what were you up to."

"I'm glad."

They stare at each other for a few seconds and then Obito lets out a sigh. For the next hour they just talk, laugh and eat. The sun sets and the sky fills with beautiful colors. The fairy lights look brighter. Obito takes photos of everything, then he moves closer to Deidara and takes a selfie of them two.

"I love you," Obito whispers. "I love you with all my heart."

Deidara hugs him tighter. "I love you too, hm."

They hold each other in silence for a while. Obito's hand shakes a little as he strokes his hair.

"You're shaky. What's up?"

"Would you like to be my husband?"

Deidara's heart races. Obito sits up and takes a shell that has been on the little table all along. A ring with a dazzling sapphire falls on his hand. He stares at Obito's smile and thinks of the first time they saw each other, their first date, their first kiss, their first argument, their first make up sex. He tries to imagine how was life without Obito and he simply can't. It's him. The love of his life.

Instead of replying, Deidara jumps on Obito and kisses him. They both fall on top of the pile of cushions.
