“I’m not trying to be funny,” Naruto says with a chuckle. “I am not trying to be anything or anyone. I trapped no one. I did nothing. I am not guilty of whatever it is you think I have done.”
I sigh deeply, almost dramatically. I’m not trying to draw Naruto’s attention. I’m trying to draw Sasuke’s. I’ve more or less deduced this Naruto’s stance on the matter and trying to appeal to him with emotion or logic won’t work. Sasuke would have gone for a balanced approach. Which would be even worse.
“You,” I say, pointing at Naruto. “You’re a fake. Where’s the real Naruto?”
I’m mostly unconvinced of the statement I’ve just spewed.
No. What I’ve just said is pure nonsense.
“Now, now, Shikamaru-san,” Naruto says, a close-lipped smile on his face. He finally turns his head towards me, his eyes coloured with exaggerated warmth. “Your accusation really hurts me, you know? I am the real Naruto. More real than you’d ever dare to see.”
A day before the most important moment of Naruto's life, Shikamaru, Sasuke, Ino and Sakura enter his mind.
