"In the dark, Bucciarati's heart beats. He can hear the roar of blood in his ears, so why does he still feel dead? He lays sleepless, staring at the ceiling, thinking nothing at all until the sky turns light gray as dawn breaks. Maybe he had slept, then, because it feels like no time at all has passed. The same feeling washes over him when he thinks back to April. It feels like just yesterday despite the fact that it's well into the colder months by now. There's an ache deep within him, a yawning void of dread and guilt and anguish that is ever present and inescapable."
