Sweaters and Lockets for Three

Summary:

A child fell.

Down, down. into the underground.

How did a child end up falling into such a place?

That's not something you need to know, dear player, as this story is barely about them, and not about you at all.

This is a story about the striped sweater squad.

more or less.

Chapter 1: Fallen, Have We?

Summary:

Down, down.

Chapter Text

A child has fallen, and yet there is no worry in their mind. They have fallen, but they are fine.

They lay on the flowers that comforted their fall, the yellow petals surprisingly soft. They lay there for a few moments before sitting up, slowly, as to make sure they dont crush the petals. Crushing the petals would ruin their softness. That wouldnt be good.

They stand. They look around. They see a hall. They walk down the hall.

There they see a yellow flower. A similar one to those that helped the small child not get hurt. They approach the yellow-petaled plant. It smiles up at them. Kind eyes met squinting curious ones. The child waves, and the flower waves back.

The flower starts speaking. Unusual for a flower, but the child does not mind.

"Howdy! My name is Asriel! But you can call me Sunshine!" the smiling flower, Sunshine, introduces itself.

The child nods and tells Sunshine their name. What is your name, player?

"Oh! That's a pretty name! It's real nice meeting you, friend! Oh! You're hurt!" it gestures to their arm, where a small scratch had been. When did they get that? It doesnt matter.

"Here! I'll heal it for you!" Sunshine wraps it's vines around your arm. A green glow lightly emits from the vines. "Heh, y'know, I've always been a good healer. One of the best in my family. Right after my mom!" the child tilts their head. "The worst was my brother. Or, well. Magic wise. With my other sibling being human, they couldn't do healing magic. So the worst in my family at healing magic was my brother, Buttercup!" Sunshine finishes talking as the healing completed. The child thanks it and asks for proper pronouns to call it by.

"Oh! Silly me. My pronouns are he, him, his, himself! And yours are?" the child tells him. He nods.

A faint sound of paws on ground alerts both beings. The look to the tunnel behind Sunshine. A goat-looking monster greets them.

"Oh hello there, my children. Are you alright?"

Chapter 2: Leaving The Ruins So Soon?

Summary:

It smells of cinnamon and butterscotch.

Chapter Text

The goat monster's name is Toriel.

She's a kind monster. She bakes the child and Sunshine a pie, and reads them stories by the fireplace. She's a very kind monster.

She acts as a mother to the child and flower, and to an extent, to you, dear player, even if she doesn't know of you.

She tucks the child in bed and cups Sunshine's petals in her paws and tells him to rest as his sibling is.

The child and Sunshine have a good time in Toriel's home.

She had known Sunshine before the child had fallen, the child learned. He was already her son. It was sweet.

The child loves it here.

The child would like to stay here, and would, if it weren't for Sunshine's insistence on leaving the ruins for a couple days to meet his best friend.

The child said no at first, but the flower never stopped. They eventually agreed and they both told their mother what they wished to do.

She was wary, but they promised they would be gone for a week max, and Sunshine would be there if anything went wrong.

They left her with a hug, as she placed a kiss atop their foreheads.

"Goodbye, Asriel. Goodbye, Frisk."

Chapter 3: Cozy Snowy Town

Summary:

Difting snowflakes.

Chapter Text

It's cold. Despite that, the child does not worry, nor shiver. The child has their sweater, striped with colors that are not green and yellow. These colors are blue and purple. Much different. Still pretty.

Sunshine resides inside a small, dull red pot. His leaves shiver ever so slightly, but he does not complain.

The child asks him where they shall go, and the flower directs them forward. Towards a too-large fence. There's the snap of a twig behind them. The child turns.

A skeleton. Short, but still taller than the child. It tilts it's head to the side, then to the other side. It looks at Sunshine, and back up at the child. It nods, and waves.

"Buttercup! Hello!" Sunshine greets. The skeleton, Buttercup, smiles. Sunshine looks back at the child. "This is Sans! You can call him 'Buttercup' if you'd like." the child nods and asks Buttercup for it's pronouns. The skeleton moves it's hands in a way that doesnt make much sense to the child. Sunshine buts in. "His pronouns are the same as mine." the child smiles and nods. They shake Buttercup's hand. A farting noise comes out. The three of them laugh. It's nice.

The three head towards a town Sunshine said was called, "Snowdin." They came across another skeleton on the way. A tall, loud one by the name of "Papyrus." He seemed like he would be a good friend, if he didn't want to capture humans.

The arrive at the snowy town. It's beautiful, to say the least. Snow drifted down from somewhere unknown, lights glowed from homes and trees. The smell of baking carried throughout the town. It was cozy. It felt like a home.

Like home.

Chapter 4: Drip, Drip, Drop

Summary:

Glowing lights, tasty pie.

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

The child had started to feel the cold, so they were staying at the Inn another night. They stocked up on food and had grabbed a backpack to store more things.

Buttercup, the ever-so-kind skeleton he is, laughed at the child for a few moments. Then brung them inside his house to find an old white and lime jacket he'd grown out of. Sunshine had no way of warming up other than cuddling into the jacket.

Sunshine had told the child that Buttercup wasnt going to travel with them on their trip, but was going to appear in places with them. The child understood, and they were off.

With their backpack full of food, stomach warmed from the fresh spaghetti they had just munched on, and cozy from the jacket, they marched onward, towards waterfall.

Chapter 5: Dark Light Blues

Summary:

Blue, blue, blue, green.

Chapter Text

Wet. Cool. Dim. Pretty.

Things that describe Waterfall. It wasn't very bright, if you ignored the vivid light blue color of the water. It was nice. A nice, cool, not cold, wet place with a gorgeous view.

The child liked it there. Sunshine said he might drown, even if he's in his flower pot. Whether he was joking or not was lost to the child.

They traveled on. Buttercup met them at his station. He... looked like he was thinking about something. The child attempts to learn what he was thinking about, but to no avail. They put it away in their mind for now.

Fighting monsters in Waterfall was slightly different to fighting them in Snowdin, just as fighting in Snowdin had been different from fighting in the Ruins. They suppose it'll be like that for Hotland and Waterfall.

The child hasn't checked any monsters recently. After finding out it's a little rude to do so without permission, they decided to only do it if they were checked first or if they had been given permission. When they had told Sunshine and Buttercup this, they received happy faces and confirming words. They liked that. They want to be a good person. They want everyone to have those happy faces. They are going to find a way to give everyone the happy faces, if its the last thing they do. They are DETERMINED.

*File saved.

Chapter 6: Interruption And Goals

Summary:

Plans.

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Undyne was difficult to fight, but the child won in the end. The Captain of the Royal Guard ended up with a new friend after that.

The child had paused for a few hours to look at the "stars" in one of the rooms. They twinkled. They looked almost like real stars. The child thinks they're prettier than real stars.

The child still thinks Buttercup looks as though he has something on his mind. Sunshine agrees. They plan on finding a way to have him spill his secrets. Other than that, the child has found out one of Buttercup's hobbies!

They had found the skeleton in the room with the false stars sewing up a small doll. It looked almost like the child themself. When asked, Buttercup had avoided the conversation, seeming embarrassed to be caught making something. Sunshine had frowned at this. The child noticed. The others did not notice their noticing. The child will find a way to make Buttercup feel better about the things he enjoys.

They are DETERMINED.
