one in a million

Summary:

[sakuma rei / reader]

Perhaps a fated meeting between bandmate and producer. Or just a fangirl and her idol.

Work Text:

Past sun down was a dangerous time for mere humans to roam the halls of Yumenosaki Academy - lest there be a certain ghoulish man lurking within the innocuously long shadows ready to attack.

You had somehow forgotten one of your notebooks in class, only realizing when you had just gotten home. After setting all your belongings down, you had immediately begun your journey back to the school to retrieve the lost notebook. The students had long gone home and the hallways were only dimly lit by the setting sun hovering in the distance.

Although most of the time you wouldn’t feel all too weird going to school after the classes had already ended — since you were in the producer course — but today there was a new feeling. An ominous creeping up your spine; the fleeting ticklishness of someone breathing down your neck.

You sharply turn your head to look back down the hallway to see nothing. No one. With a somewhat anxious huff, you sped up your speed to your classroom further in the hall.

Unfortunately, that notebook was quite essential to your studies and life at Yumenosaki. In it was pages upon pages of notes on the basics of producing music and the bands at the high school. What took up most of the notebook was actually notes on your favorite band — UNDEAD. Although you would never call yourself a fangirl, it was one of your highschool dreams to one day produce a song for them.

Most notably, your favorite was the band’s lead singer; Rei Sakuma.

Well, anyways, there are other matters to deal with at hand. Like first of all, finding the notebook itself.

If you remembered correctly, the classroom you were headed to was a left turn and the second room on the right. Turning on your heel, you marched up to the class 2-B and turned the knob, scanning around the room. Unfortunately, the notebook was nowhere to be found. Did you lose it somewhere else?

No, that wasn’t possible. You distinctly recalled that you had left it here . So where was it?

Stepping into the room, the hazy red light of sunset bathed the entire space in a stunningly sinister glow. You leaned over to see if the notebook had fallen to the ground perhaps.

Crrreak.

You jumped, nerves still on end. Turning around swiftly, you saw that the door had closed on its own. That’s weird… did doors usually do that here? You turned back to face forwards, only to bump into a solid chest. Stifling a yell, you winced and stumbled backwards, expecting to hit the cold floor of the classroom.

Instead, you met the gentle embrace of a cool body. You pushed at the chest on instinct, breaking free from the hold. Daring to open your eyes, you were met with a pair that glowed blood red in the evening light.

“R-Rei?!” You gasped. Oh no! The leader of UNDEAD, the subject of your in-class daydreams; was he the one that had just saved you from certain doom?! That you had pushed away?!! “I m-mean, Sakuma-senpai!”

There he stood in front of you, his back doused in the waning light of the sun, the red light of his eyes practically winning over the sun itself. He donned a smile on his face, seemingly enjoying the thought of looking down at you. Oh — was he holding something in his other hand?

“Little miss. I understand that you’ve lost something… hm? Something important?” His voice was always pleasant when he sang — but the way it drawled so painfully slow when he spoke was enough to bring a blush to your face. You coughed and looked away, hoping the vampire wouldn’t notice the growing pink on your cheeks. (He’s a vampire. What, you think he’s doing this by accident?) You gulp, tucking a nonexistent strand of hair behind your ear by nervous habit.

“My, ah, my notebook. I think it was in this room.” He feigns a gasp of surprise when you finally say it, fangs in his mouth gleaming almost dangerously. It takes everything in you to not stare at him openly, now opting to just look away. But, somehow, your gaze just keeps returning to him. As you blink away again, you don’t notice his gentle smile morphing into a sly grin.

“My, you wouldn’t mean — this notebook?” He waves the compacted book above your head, the sticky notes and random scraps on paper hastifully shoved inside threatening to fall out at his precarious action. You contain a squeak. Had he seen what you had written? The little doodles of you and him?! No!!! You move to grab your belonging, reaching your hand out to the book only to grasp thin air. In the motion of stepping forwards so hurriedly, your face meets his sturdy chest once more.

Had you not already been so embarrassed, maybe you would’ve enjoyed the feeling of being so close to someone you looked up to so much.

Stepping backwards once more, you let out a flurry of apologies to which he only holds a finger to your lips for. Rei’s expression fills with mirth when you shut up so quickly at the gesture. He chuckles; the sound is deep and rumbling and far too much for your already frazzled heart. You blink and stammer, unable to force out any noise beside a trembling ‘eep!’ when his finger doesn’t move.

“Little miss, do come by again. I’m sure my band mates would like to meet you as well.” He hands you the notebook and removes himself as quickly as he had appeared. The door swings behind you and all you can do is stand there, completely awestruck.

Blinking rapidly, you try to recollect yourself. This was real, right? This wasn’t just some extensive day dream that had you dozing off in class, right ? You swear you can still feel his finger on your lips. Although his skin had been cool, you swear the flesh of your lips is practically burning to the touch now. Looking down at your prized possession, a leaflet of paper drifted to the ground.

XXX-XXX-XXXX

Call me.

Your face was burning now. He had to have seen your horrible drawings (practically self-insert fanart) of you and him. Oh no. Oh no no. Oh no no no —

Well. What were you supposed to do? Just not ever contact him? Like hell you were going to pass up this chance to produce for your favorite group! You pick up the leaflet of paper with newfound determination as you march out from the classroom.

To you, this was a miraculous coincidence. A one in a million chance.

To Rei, this was yet another puzzle piece falling into place. Although, admittedly, this was a puzzle piece he did rather like.
