~~~~~~~~~~~ CHAPTER ONE ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Hey, have you heard the news about the increasing number of vortexes growing?” Itsuki asked their only friend as they walked to school together. They had to look up and squint due to their blindness, but the scent of their friend was enough to help them relax their quills.
“How could I not, it’s all the news is talking about!” Yorokobi says, looking up from her phone. She jostles her bag on her back, making it slightly more comfortable. It’s super heavy and she regrets packing so many spare snacks.
“I-I’m honestly worried,” they poked their fingers together. They were terrified, about what had happened to the people who had fallen into those portals and were never found again.
Yorokobi sighs. She knows Itsuki well enough to know when they’re worried about something. These portals must have them on edge. “Hey! Don’t worry, the heroes have a handle on it.“ She says, turning around and walking backward, walking a few steps in front so that she can see their friend properly. “Besides, whoever’s responsible for these portals wouldn’t go anywhere near UA. right?” She says, smiling at her friend.
She genuinely believes in her words. UA is a fortress. The chances of anything bad happening there is like 1 in a million chances.
“I guess,” they nodded, a smile on their slightly mouse-like face. They were happy they had Yorokobi around. “Let’s go then. We’ll be late for class if we don’t.”
“Ahhhh crap!” Yorokobi says, grabbing some of her hair black hair in her hands, her bracelets sliding down her arms, making them jingle against each other. “Wanna race? The last one there buys lunch!” She says, a mischievous smile crossing her face. Itsuki nodded, a grin stretching out as they got to their knees to feel the ground so they could scurry along. They had memorized the path, yes, but their Quirk allowed quick running when they were on four legs.
She watches Itsuki scurry away, they’re super fast. She can’t afford to but lunch again! She knows what the fastest way will be. She quickly looks around, making sure there’s no one looking before making two barriers from her hands as she launched herself into the air. They are both pale blue, so not that strong. They shatter as soon as she’s in the air.
Then she lands on top of a building with a roll. She jumps from building to building, hoping to her there first.
Itsuki sniffed their way around, rushing away like crazy. Yorokobi watches Itsuki make their way down towards UA. Right now it’s neck to neck. She can see UA, it’s so close.
She jumps off the final building, hair streaming out behind her as she does. She coats her body in a pale red barrier as she lands in a roll. It absorbs the impact and she stands up. Itsuki comes up next to her.
They quickened their paces, their newly cut nails rushing to the gates.
She runs quickly. Her lungs burn. She makes it past the gates and past Itsuki. Making her way towards the classroom, she slams open the door. “Safe!” She says, throwing her arms out like they do in baseball, making a cross with her, and then breaking it.
"T-That was cheating!" they panted as they were right behind her.
“Never said we couldn’t use our quirks!” Yorokobi says, doubling over and taking deep breaths. “Think I overdid it though,” She says, collapsing into a seat. She can hear her pulse beating in her ears. Damn, she's more out of shape than she thought.
"Here," they handed her a water bottle.
“Thank you.” She says, taking a big gulp.
She looks around the classroom, for it being so close to the bell it’s pretty empty. Did they get the time wrong or something? There’s a boy face down on a desk with purple hair that looks half dead. She gently and repeatedly taps Itsuki’s side, avoiding their quills. “Is he dead?” She asks, pointing to the boy.
"I-I don't think so, but h-he's Shinsou Hitoshi," Itsuki answered. They had seen him around and had found him cool for wanting to be a hero despite his Quirk's bad reception.
“Who? Wait, uh, didn’t we go to middle school with him? He has that brainwashing quirk, right?” She says, remembering seeing him around. He always looked sad and lonely. Whenever she went over to him he would walk away. So they hadn’t really interacted at all.
They nodded, "H-He's really sad..."
She sighs. “Well, come on then!” She says, standing. “Let’s go make a new friend!” She smiles as wide as she can and starts walking over to Shinso.
He looked up and blinked.
Standing in front of him is a tall slim girl with waist-length slick black hair that’s kept off her face with a white hairband. In her ears are large earrings in the shape of orange slices. Her eyes are a swirl of different colors, the only ones that seem to be missing are red and blue. She has the girls' UA uniform on and a bright pink backpack that’s covered in badges and pins and keychains. She’s also smiling at him. She sticks out her hand, each nail painted a different color, as she holds out of a series of thin silver bracelets bang off each other as she does. “Hi! I’m Yorokobi! This is Itsuki!” She gestures to a smaller person beside her, with quills raised and big black eyes staring into his soul. He noticed the grey hoodie on the other and deduced that it was their version of the uniform, probably tailored especially due to the quills.
"Shinsou Hitoshi," he answered. "What do you want?" He was unnerved by these two, but he actually found how they mismatched cute.
“To be your friend!” She says, sitting at the desk in front of him. “I tried to befriend you in middle school but you always walked away. Anyways pleasure to finally meetcha!” She says, still holding her hand out, her muscles getting a little bit sore from holding her hand out for so long.
“Why would you want to be friends with me?” he frowned, feeling confused as he remembered what the people in his old school used to say.
“W-Why not?” Itsuki smiled.
“Yea! Why not?!” She says, glaring at him a little bit. She feels her heart sink in disappointment. Does he not wanna be friends with them?
“Because I have a villain’s quirk,” he deadpanned.
“I-I think your Quirk’s cool, t-though! I-I’m sure you can use it to be a hero!” Itsuki shook their head.
“Yea. Ain’t no such thing as a villain's quirk. Only villainous people. Any quirk can be good, any quirk can be evil,” She says with a shrug. "Sometimes people can be jerks, but that’s a part of life. So, whatcha say? Will you shake this poor sinners hand?” She asks, quoting an old Disney movie and shaking her outstretched fingers at him.
He frowned, but sighed and gave a small smile as he took it. He had to admit that he felt happy that he had made a new friend too.
“Heck yes!” She says. “New friend obtained!” She jumps in victory.
“W-Welcome,” Itsuki smiled. The quills began to go down a bit too.
Shinsou wonders what he just got into, looking between the timid hedgehog person and the color tornado in front of him. It was going to be eventful for sure. And Shinsou had a feeling that even though it felt like a bad thing, it was also going to be interesting.
It was at this moment that fates crossed and destinies converged. Little did they know what their friendship would lead to...
Out of nowhere, a swirling portal opened up under the three newly minted friends, sucking them into it.
“W-WHAT THE-“
“AHHHHHH!!!!” Itsuki curled up into a ball.
Yorokobi feels the weightlessness as she falls through the portal. It’s an odd sensation for sure. Especially as her hair is streaming above her head and she had to pull her skirt down to stop herself from flashing everyone.
“What the heck is this?!” She shouts, checking to see how her friends are.
Shinsou floated and yelled back, “I have no idea!”
The other end of the portal spits them out in the middle of a forest. It’s dark and creepy and has an ominous sense of foreboding about it. The trees look dead but despite the lack of leaves no light seems to be present, the air is thick with something, something that seems to crackle. It’s not a place you would want to spend a lot of time.
Yorokobi gets snagged on a tree. She kicks her legs in frustration and the back of her shirt rips, sending her to the ground. She faceplants onto the ground. “Ow,” She whispers to herself as she stands and dusts herself down. She takes a deep breath and looks around. She can’t see anyone.
“ITSUKI!” “SHINSO!” She cups her hands to mouth as she shouts, trying to give her voice more strength. She had no idea where she was. The only thing she knows is she doesn’t like this location, it gives her the heebie jeebies.
“I-I’m fine!” Itsuki squeaked out as they rolled out of the bushes, uncurling to get back to their knees.
“I-I’m fine too,” Shinsou got up and walked out of the bushes as well. “Everyone okay?”
“I’m fine. I think. The tree broke my fall.” She says, rolling her shoulders back and stretching slightly. There’s a slight pain due to grazes caused by the tree branches. But it's not too bad, nothing a nice bath couldn't fix.
“G-Great!” Itsuki smiled, even though they were smiling at a tree.
“But... where are we?” Shinsou asked.
Yorokobi looks at her friend, slightly concerned about the fact that they were trying to converse with the trees. She should help them.
“Itsuki. That’s, that’s a tree,” She says, gently turning her friend to face Shinsou and herself. Then she turns to Shinsou. “I don’t know, but I’m going to take a wild guess and say, a forest?” She says, looking at the various trees. There’s a strange feeling coming from the place, like someone’s watching them. It creeps her out.
“Good point. But why are we here?” he asked. He didn't like it too, and he wanted to at least know where he was.
“Dude. I know as much as you do.” She snaps.
After seeing the frown on his face, she takes a breath. “Sorry, just this place gives me the creeps. Can we get out of here? I feel like we’re being watched.” She says, looking around, trying to see if she could see anyone or anything. A way to get out.
Itsuki nodded. They seemed terrified.
“Alright then,” Shinsou agreed, and the trio began to make their way out, unaware of where exactly they had stumbled into...
