Tension

Summary:

today was supposed to be easy and simple, like the past week. attack Negati, collect drops and statues, restore the hearts. and it was!.
until the final statue.
this was not planned.

Notes:

I'm bad at writing, but this idea had been stuck in my head for a while now, I haven't read the novel so wonderworld would work differently here, in here Leo and Emma live in the theatre until restoring everyone's hearts, this would be like the way the game is, simple, the characters enter the stage with the guide to restore balance, then get back to the theatre to rest.

this takes place in Haoyu Chang's stage, specifically the hiding of one of the statues in Act1.
I'd recommend reading the reference sheet for my OC here before tackling this short. ENJOY.

Work Text:

“I found it!” Came the loud, but still quiet voice of a petite blond girl in sheep like costume. She had been out with her two new friends, trying to restore the hearts of the poor souls whom emotions became unbalanced. It had all been going great, and the trio children succeeded in restoring balance to 3 people the past...um...week?. she’s not quite sure for she has lost track. all she knows is that Balan had given her and Leo each separate rooms in the theatre, to rest and restore their energy when exhausted and/or injured. ‘very sweet of him’. living in the theatre wasn’t bad really, when they’re not going out restoring balance, Balan would give them a lot of activities to do, from a dancing party as huge as a ball, to a small sleepover for the 3 young ones. smiling she caught her thoughts drifting a bit.

the last person before the kids decide to call it a day is the stage they’re currently working on, a boy whom seems to face a conflict which spawned some stress. “my nerdy buddy” Lolo’s words. They have collected most of the statutes of the first part of this stage. and collected some drops for the Tim’s to feed, when retreating to the isle. with Emma discovering the last statue hidden up high on a wooden platform behind a wall, that has a huge pit under it, finding usefulness in the soring sheep to sore up and get, it’s looking like they’d be retreating soon.

Standing on said platform and giving a glance at her friends below her, they looked like tiny little heads looking up in anticipation ( and probably exhaustion ), getting a bit of a chuckle from her. Leo’s mood wasn’t the brightest today, for whenever they encountered the creatures of this stage dancing, Lolo would stop everything just to say ‘hey’, pet them, and ask about their day, even if most didn’t understand what she was saying , Meanwhile Leo would be ahead of them already, wanting desperately to finish this and get some rest. their guide in this adventure, cupped her hands around her mouth telling Emma to throw the little statue down. Leo taking this as a command, raised his hands up a bit to receive the balan shaped statue. Seeing it as safe, Emma aimed for the boys hands and threw the golden object to him , albeit with what looked like extra force then intended. Leo noticing this, strengthened his focus to catch the thing, and when it looked close enough he tried to seize the object between his palms, but the statue collided with both his hands, hard.

“GAH!”

stinging hot pain immediately shooting in his arms, causing him to withdraw his hands as a reflex. The statue continued to fall, heading straight for the pit. Lolo noticing this, with no hesitance, ran past the injured boy and jumped with the intention of snatching the cursed thing before it’s lost. Successfully catching the golden statue in her right hand, she landed her feet on the dangerous edge of the grassy land before her toes decided to slip. And with a frightening yelp, everything was suddenly in slow motion to the boy, he was sure his heart skipped a beat or two. Emma’s shrieking in the background being unheard of in his ears as he sprinted to catch the girl.

                                                                 .—————————————.

Opening her eyes she noticed her body dangling down the cliff, Leo holding her left foot with his right hand while his left is trying to balance both their weights on safe green land. Lolo would have thrown a snarky comment if he didn’t look like he’d seen a ghost.

He was panting like he’d ran a marathon.

The young boy tried collecting himself, “you caught her, you caught her , she’s unharmed, she didn’t fall, she won’t fall, it’s okay, deep breath...”, but the adrenaline is still high. blood still pumping in his vines, his mind was running wild , his breathing was still shallow, and he can feel himself start sweating, even though he was trying to convince himself everything is okay now, deep down, he knows he may not be able to pull her back up. And it’s not that she’s heavy, no, she’s questionably light. But he can feel that a simple move will cause unimaginable hot pain in his arms.

And the result of that is scaring him.

Emma’s brain still processing the horrific scene in front of her, although started descending down in panic and hope of lending Leo a hand or two. The guys mind was alarmed with so many questions ,”how can she be this careless!? is she always like this? how can Balan trust her alone in the stages?  does Balan even know about this? oh god where is that clown when you need him-“Leos left arm started to feel some kind of staticky numbness, ”no no no no no No NO NO...”

stinging hot pain. and sudden heavy air pressure on his face like he is falling...but, he IS falling and head first too, the world going black and white , twirling a bit??, he can’t breath, that’s probably the problem. He can physically feel his heart leap, throwing him in a woozy episode, what’s going on?, he can’t hear anything except his pounding heart and zooming brain.

“..o!”

“..EO!”

“...LEO!!”

It felt like someone pulled him from the deep ocean where he’d been drowning, and when he looked up he was greeted with a pale freckled face with sandy blonde hair looking down at him, blue eyes filled with concern, oh she’s been asking if he’s okay,........is he though........,he feels much more exhausted then before, which confused him. Why?? And like a truck hitting him he remembered, snapping his neck roughly he could have unattached his head from his body, he looked down to the still dangling gremlin. Very surprised he hasn’t subconsciously let go in that episode of.....whatever that was, he almost lost his life saving her, he doesn’t wanna imagine what would have been if Emma hadn’t caught him.

He had to make sure. With uncertainty clear in his voice “Lolo-“

”IM OKAY!..............I’m okay Leo......”.

more then okay actually, for she felt touched with Leos instant action, she never really felt this..important?, she doesn’t know really, but looking at Leos face, ( which is hard since she is dangling and blood is gathering in her brain-)there’s a bothersome fluttering feeling making her all goosey in the stomach, ‘oh no not that-‘.  Throwing that unnecessary and unwelcomed feeling out of the window, The guilt will settle in soon anyways, for now, hopefully, she didn’t memorize his traumatized features, yes she’ll welcome the guilt for she deserves it but that doesn’t mean she wants to stay awake at night thinking about it, oh no no no. Leos painful moan snapping her from the chaos in her head, and now looking at it, Emma holding an injured (in both hands) Leo by his left arm,the one that before his fall, was keeping them up and stable, Which thankfully looks a bit better since she’s holding him in a non-painful spot. And Leo still holding her left leg by his right hand, this one looks like the one causing him the most pain, for his grip is as tight as Balan's suit

BALAN!!

‘oh-Balan would be absolutely FIERCE, oh god have mercy on me with my journey soon to his office ‘

After her lil prayer session she looked up to check on them, Emma looks like she’s having trouble lifting both of their weights up.

Busying herself with a question plugging her mind, yes she’s thankful and touched but also concerned, for how can reactions this big, spawn from something this small.

After hearing another painful hiss from ‘you know who’ she lost it, those moans will hunt her dreams in bed for sure, enough is enough. The young guide started thrashing her body to try and get rid of the beaten hand closed tightly around her ankle. The reaction she received from the young boy made her flinch a bit in fear, but she pretended to not have ears, call her selfish but she’d rather fall, then deal with an hour of Emma hopelessly trying her best and Leo choking her ears with his pained ‘ughs’, efficiently escaping, she probably looked a bit twisted in the head smiling like that, while diving in the dark depth of what’s believed as to be her doom. All she heard later on was a throat ripping howl.

and then darkness.

Pleasant darkness.

                                                                 .—————————————.

Emma felt like throwing up.

in her 14 years of being alive she never expected to witness such a horrific scene. front row.  Needle stinging pain in her eyes, and her stomach wasn’t doing good. With shaky arms, she pulled the poor boy up to safe land. Trying desperately to ignore the warnings her body is giving her, about the tummy liquids soon to be flowing from her mouth. Managing to retreat the body of the traumatized individual whom looks like his entire soul was vacuum sucked out of him. The guy collapsed on safe grounds, face first, the young pale girl felt her muscles sickeningly give out, her body felt absolutely squished by gravity. Now with her little palms iron gripping the greens bellow her painfully , she couldn’t get herself to look at the drop. Still trying to process what just happened.

‘It was a second....simply a second’.

She never imagined a world full of dancing creatures as this, to be the setting of such a stomach flipping death. Giving her friend a concerned glance, he looked awful, eyeballs bulging out, unblinkingly, he was sweating, heavy breath leaving his young figure and another forcibly entering, trying his best to get the much needed oxygen in his body, and failing miserably. Low oxygen causing his brain to function poorly, and the young one felt unrealistic in an agonizing way.

She was smiling.

She fell to her death on purpose. smiling.

What now?, the kids didn’t know. they absolutely refuse to move a single muscle with a missing teammate.

Alongside an air so heavy Emma asked the much needed question,

‘How will they break this up to Balan?’

“Why are you guys kneeling??”. To say they shrieked would be an understatement, for God’s sake, Emma choked on her tongue!.

Lolo, the balan wannabe, was standing behind them in all her glory, with no scratch, staring down at the gawking blond kids with a judgmental look. hands on her hips like some kind of parental figure about to scold their child, you know , like she didn’t fall to her death seconds ago. “I appreciate the sentiment but..” raising her eyebrows “-it didn’t need to be that extreme.” The only response she received from the younger teens was their wide jaws and blinking eyes, they didn’t even get up from their kneeling position.“...-you’re reactions that is.” Clarifying her previous statement still didn’t bring any results except the heavy breathing of the kids , and after a couple of minutes full of silence and an awkward tension, Leo got up shakingly, getting the attention of the guide in front of them and making eye contact with her, giving her a tired, although pissed stare.

Returning that stare with a small glare of hers, not looking up to letting her guard down when the situation isn’t clear to her yet. If she was the old version of herself, the one when her life went downhill before entering Wonderworld and meeting her father , she would have been crying on the floor right then and there. But she’s not. despite Leos glare being full of hatred, and it obviously stung , she won’t let it show until she understands everyone’s point of view. And all what was needed was time, Emma witnessing a silent conversation being exchanged between the two glaring kids and in a moment of brain cells moving, Lolo’s features changed from looking angry and cold, to one where someone poured a bucket full of ice on her.

“ I didn’t tell you.”

it didn’t come out as a question, she’s far used to her brain being foggy and effecting her daily life but this took the cake.“ HEY!-“ Next thing she new she was shoved roughly to the side, causing her to loose her balance and fall on her behind, looking up offended and a million insults ready to be thrown at the boy, it was too late for he had went to the isle of Tim’s portal nearby, and its looking like he’d ignore the Tim’s and head straight to the theatre. “tsk, childish.” murmuring under her breath, she got up dusting her white flashy clothes.

when kneeling to help Emma up she ended up getting tackled to the floor again with a yelp, being forced in a heartfelt moment, the girl in her arms was shaking, palms digging in the brunettes jacket from her back, trying to settle the war in her mind about what’s fake and what’s real, the Lolo she’s hugging is real. “I’m sorry-“ “ shhh stop please..” her voice cracking not backing up her words “ please just-, just hug me.” burying her face in the older teens shoulder, sniffing pathetically, while her friend returned the hug lovingly. It was a bittersweet moment. Listening to her friend break down in her arms, because of her. with the thought that she may have ruined everything Leo has been working on in his social life the past week, and what might await her when they get back, sighing heavily.

‘loosing the cursed statue doesn’t sound so bad now’.
