Warmth

Summary:

It's raining, and Six doesn't have a coat to keep her warm. Mono decides to help.

Notes:

Just wanted to write huddling for warmth. This au idea does not belong to me, it belongs to @adhdsix on tumblr! Thank you for letting me use the idea, I really enjoyed writing this. I didn’t write this as shipping, i wrote them as friends. It feels weird for me to ship two small children.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

The two kids jumped out of the vents with urgency without a chance to spread their wings and landed into a garbage can. Mono could hear the Teacher screeching and snapping her teeth, but she could not reach him and Six.

Mono climbed out of the garbage and Six followed, both of them fluffing up and shaking their wings instinctively. Rain was pouring down.

Mono took a hold of Six’s hand without much thought and sprinted over to a place where they could take cover. The underside of a tall building’s balcony, completed with piles of wooden planks and broken concrete.

When the two of them were under some cover and away from the rain, Mono let go of Six’s hand and slumped down. Six soon followed him.

The duo was exhausted, their chests burning. For a while the only sound was the two of them breathing and the rain falling.

Mono, despite their current condition, was relieved to be rid of the looming threat of the Teacher. More monsters would follow for sure, The Pale City was full of them, but for now he let himself be calm.

He looked over to Six. Her small dark wings were messy. Her wings were always messy as far as Mono was concerned, but getting wet hadn’t done them any good. Six’s breathing had stabilized a little. Mono stared at Six silently.

“You’re doing-” Six cleared her throat, her voice raspy, “ You’re doing the thing again.”

Mono’s shoulders and wings tensed. Had he? Oh. He had. Mono had a habit of staring at things for an uncomfortable amount of time. When his eyes focused on someone (or something) he could stare at it for an hour if no one bothered him. This habit had almost cost him his life in many occassions but he could never stop himself.

“Sorry.” Mono mumbled. Mono turned away but could see Six shivering from the corner. Her wings didn’t help much with the cold rain, and she didn’t have a trenchcoat on like Mono.

Mono would offer her his coat, but he was sure he would only get back a glare in response. He was also cold, but at least his trenchcoat and bigger wings were better protection.

Mono stared out into the city. The rain wasn’t slowing down anytime soon. Mono and Six would be there for a while, it seemed.

He tried to cozy up and shift into a more comfortable position. He spread his wings to the sides and tried to rest his back on the wall. After a few more squirms and shifting around he finally settled on a comforable position.

Six was still shivering. She was curled up, arms around herself and wings wrapped around her to get warmer.

Mono hesitated, then lifted out a wing in the direction of Six in invitation. Six was close to a fetal position. She looked at his wing, and then at his face (or rather his paperbag).

After a moment, she scooted next to him and nestled close. Their wings in the other’s space was a bit awkard but certainly worth it for the warmth it provided.

The two of them had no desire to leave their limited cover and bundle of warmth before the rain stopped. Their wings would get waterlogged in a rain as bad as this, and would only slow them down. And slowing down meant death.

So they waited, wings wrapped around each other, rain falling.

Notes:

To clear up some confusion, Mono has tawny owl wings and Six has crow wings. Mono keeps staring at things because he's an owl!

Six: Stop staring at me with them big ol eyes!
Mono:
