Work Text:
Glancing up from the book he was reading, Bad noted the way his son was stood in the doorway holding something behind his back and shuffling nervously. He promptly placed his bookmark between the pages, closed the book, and set it on the side table. His tail, curled around Skeppy's ankle, squeezed, catching his husband's attention from where it had previously been focused on his notebook. He waited for Skeppy to put his pen and pad down, and then he nodded his head towards Sapnap. Who was still shuffling nervously in the doorway.
"Hey, buddy," Skeppy greeted cheerfully. He handed his notebook and pen off to Bad who obligingly placed it atop his own book.
Sapnap looked over at them, tail flicking anxiously behind him, and said, "hey, Dad. Hey, Papa."
"Are you okay, Sappy?" Bad asked. He watched closely as Sapnap shuffled closer to them, his hands still hidden behind his back, and from years being married to Skeppy, self-proclaimed troll master, he was more than wary of a nasty surprise. "What have you got there, sweetheart?" he asked. The shifty behaviour coupled with the hidden hands had him suspecting any number of childish pranks.
Skeppy, also aware of the possibility of a prank, shifted forward in his seat. It was hard to tell whether he was nervous of the potential consequences or excited to see what their son had come up with. Either way, Bad rolled his eyes fondly, and turned his attention back to Sapnap.
"Do you have something to show us, Sap?" Skeppy asked curiously.
Sapnap nodded. "It's... it's not very good though."
Sapnap seemed too nervous for it to be a prank as Bad had first suspected. He met Skeppy's eyes and the two had a quick, wordless conversation, before they both turned back to their son. This definitely seemed more like a time for parental reassurance than anything else.
Shaking his head, Bad said, "I'm sure whatever it is is lovely."
"Yeah," Skeppy agreed, offering a reassuring smile, "I bet it's awesome."
Their assurances seemed to pay off because, after a quick deep breath, Sapnap shoved his hands in front of himself to showcase what he had been hiding. He held it in front of himself so they could see exactly what it was.
"At school we were asked to draw our favourite people," Sapnap explained, "and I decided to draw you guys. Our family."
With watery eyes, Bad very carefully, almost reverently, took the offered piece of paper to get a closer look. Skeppy leaned against Bad's side to get a better look too.
"Wow," he breathed, looking back up at Sapnap. "You really drew this?"
Sapnap nodded.
It was a crayon drawing clearly done by a child. There was a bright yellow sun in the corner, bright green grass covering the lower half of the page, and bright blue sky covering the upper half of the page with a few fluffy clouds. In the middle were three figures. The one on the left was clearly Bad. It was the tallest of the three with black skin, large horns, a long spaded tail, and white glitter glue for the eyes and smiling mouth. The figure on the right was clearly Skeppy. It was wearing Skeppy's signature blue hoodie and headbox with a happy smile on it instead of his usual derp face. Then between them both, holding each figures hand, was little Sapnap with a bright smile on his face. Above each of them were pink hearts decorated with red glitter to make them shine more.
"I know it's not very good because I'm not a good drawer yet. Not like Papa." Sapnap scratched at his wrist uncomfortably, shuffling nervously again. "Do... do you like it?" he mumbled.
Skeppy grinned brightly at his son. "Sapnap, we love it," he told him genuinely. "It's amazing."
Opening his arms up in invitation, Skeppy beckoned him close, and grinned when Sapnap dove at the opportunity of a hug. The two of them looked at Bad who was still staring at the picture as though it was the best thing he had ever seen in his life.
"Wh-why is Papa crying?" Sapnap asked fretfully.
Wiping away his tears quickly, Bad turned to him, smile wobbly but genuine, and said, "because this is the sweetest picture I've ever seen. You did amazing, baby." He leaned over to drop a quick kiss to Sapnap's forehead.
Sapnap giggled. "I'm glad you both like it! I tried really hard."
"I can see that," Skeppy said, "you did a really great job."
"I love the glitter!" Bad told him. "It looks so pretty!"
Sapnap beamed, clearly proud, and basked in the praise from his parents.
The following day, when Sapnap ran into the living room, the child came to an abrupt halt. There, properly framed, was his drawing. It was displayed in the middle of the room for all to see.
Seeing clearly how much his parents liked his drawing and the fact they wanted to show it off had Sapnap's face splitting into a wide smile. He looked at it, his drawing of their happy little family displayed for all to see, and felt proud.
"Sapnap!" His papa called. "Do you want to come try these muffins? I made a fresh batch."
Taking one last, long look at his framed picture, Sapnap thought about how the rest of the walls in the house would look good with more of his art. He would have to speak to his Papa or Dad about getting some paints or proper colouring pens. But that was something he could worry about later.
For now he had muffins to eat.
