"Hey. I love you, too," TK looked passionately into his boyfriend's eyes, reciprocating the words TK knew Carlos wanted to get out of his mouth.
Carlos took a selfish moment to get lost in TK's eyes like he's done since the first day he met him. But the moment only lasted a few seconds before he felt TK's hands on his chest, moving him towards the window he had just broken. It was all moving so quick, and all he wanted to do was for time to slow down and to be in TK's arms. But he couldn't, and he was running out of time. He took one last look at his bedroom before climbing into the window frame.
TK looked behind him to see the flames just about four feet away from the men, engulfing any towels TK was thinking about using to cover up the shard glass on the window frame. But knowing that was no longer an option, he turned back to his boyfriend, who had gotten his legs up and over the window frame, positioned now sitting on the window frame with his legs dangling outside.
TK tried to form the words 'I love you' one last time, but it ended up just coming out as incoherent coughs. Carlos took one last look at TK, hesitating slightly before taking the big jump.
It was as his coughing fit finally halted that TK looked up to see his boyfriend had vanished. He ran over to the window frame, trying to get a look down at Carlos -- to see if he had landed okay. Unfortunately for him, the smoke prevented any sight of his boyfriend, and all he could do was pray as he, too, got positioned and ready for the jump. He took a deep breath of the fresh-ish air and prepared himself to jump, but that's when the unexpected happened. The house began to violently shake, and he just barely was able to catch himself from stumbling out of it by getting a good grip on the window frame. Now, he knew he really didn't have any time to waste, so he just went for the jump.
By pure luck, TK had managed to land just inches to Carlos' right. Neither men could identify any injuries to themselves at the moment, as they were running off pure adrenaline and what they'd call 'emergency mode.'
Of course, both men knew the proper way to jump out of a burning building, by squeezing your legs tight and bending your knees slightly, but both of their legs did give out and they ended up going face first into the patch of grass.
Woozy from hitting their heads, both men struggled, but eventually reached their end goal of turning their heads to make sure the other was okay.
Their hands also found each other, connecting passionately and squeezing each other tightly. Both of their bodies convulsed with coughs and faces were covered in ash already. The background noise of the building collapsing didn't really affect them that much, as both their ears had already been useless from the high pitched noises and jump impact. Both men gave an exhausted, but relieved smile to each other before both eventually losing their battles with consciousness.
--
When they awoke, their beds were aside each other so they wouldn't be lazily screaming each other's name, asking where the other one was.
TK had awoken first, panicking at the sight of an unconscious Carlos. But the nurse near him had reassured him there was no life-threatening damage done to either of him, and Carlos would be awakening soon.
In the meantime the nurse had given TK the rundown of his injuries, which TK paid as much attention to as he could. Wasn't anything serious anyways, just a minor concussion and sprained right meniscus.
Soon enough TK's worries flew away as he watched Carlos open his 'soulful brown eyes.' They softened looking back at TK's eyes, and a small smile formed on his lips. He, too, was immediately given the rundown of his injuries, all about the same amount of seriousness as TK's. He thanked the nurse before she walked out of their room to give them some privacy.
Carlos' locked eyes with TK until he unlocked them, darting around the floor and forming tear droplets. TK looked on, concerned.
"Baby, what's wrong?" Carlos was still unable to meet his eyes, the tears in them falling.
"I just- I should've been more prepared, I should've had an extinguisher in my bedroom. I'm really sorry, I-" TK shook his head persistently, making a shushing noise to just make his boyfriend stop blaming himself.
"Hey, take my hand and look at me, 'Los," TK asked in a soft tone, eyes still focused Carlos. Carlos did what he asked, turning his head and connecting his hand with TK's. He felt immediate comfort and love radiating from TK, almost making him want to cry more for ever letting a fire almost ruin this. "This was not your fault. And we're okay, okay? We'll replace everything we lost, but what we didn't lose is each other. Remember that, baby. We're safe, we didn't lose each other. I'm right here," TK reassured him, giving his hand a squeeze. Carlos nodded, the tears still flowing down his soft, chiseled cheeks.
"I love you," Was all that Carlos could muster out, voice cracking in the process. TK gave him a charmed smile.
"I love you, too." And that was all they needed in that moment.
