Chapter Text
He couldn't make it. No matter how he judged or analyzed the situation, Lucifer would never be able to make it to Daniel's side to protect him. He knew that. And it stung. Looking out at his lover, whom he had spent over a hundred years getting to know, and loving. Through the happy days, the sad ones, and the uncertain and unexpected ones. Watching his lover pierce his heart over and over so that his soul could live on, was painful. There was nothing Lucifer hated more than that.
But he was selfish. He had to admit. Being with Daniel was like a fever dream, one that he never wanted to end.
He could only watch in horror, as the sorcerer stepped into the field to face his enemy. Lucifer wanted to stop it, he wanted to stop Daniel from leaving him, but he knew it was impossible. So he stood there. Watching the love of his life walk away from him forever.
There wasn't much either of the men in the field had said to the other. One wanted to break his curse, and the other wanted revenge. Daniel offered peace. He didn't want to hurt the wicked being who had made him suffer for the past hundreds of years. The man wouldn't listen., and he struck first.
And all the fallen angel could do is watch. As another war broke out in front of him. He could not step into the field the humans were in. Even as the sky darkened, and the bolt of lightning struck his lover, and he felt his heartbreak. Daniel had struck back, and his power had killed his opponent, but there would be nothing Lucifer could do to help him, as the curse had been broken.
He ran to his side, tears flowing down his face. Picking the small human up in his arms, and walking out of the field, and to a tree. He places the cooling body of his lover on the wet grass, and knelt beside him.
"You're.... so warm." His voice was weak, almost not even there. Again.... Why did things have to end this way for him? He could have lost his mortality like the other humans, and died a happy death. Without regrets.
"You're warm too.", his selfish desire to be by his human's side forever was fading. He curled his hand around his lover's own and smiled weakly. "Stay with me, please. Just a little longer."
"You know I can't do that. I told you, loving me meant you would have to sacrifice your heart.", he wiped a tear from Lucifer's face, and he touched the arrow in his chest. "You're going to be happy I'm gone. You won't even notice. You won't have to yell at me to be careful, or run from me whenever It's your turn to bottom, and we won't have to fight over who does the dishes, or who takes the kids to school."
"I enjoyed all of those things!" he wanted to say, maybe scream it. So loudly everyone in the Devildom would hear.
"Take care of yourself. Tell the children I love them, and don't cry over me for too long. Okay?"
He could not promise he wouldn't. "I'll try."
"Please do. I love you."
"I love you too."
"Maybe if you kiss me I'll last a little longer."
He said that every time he reset his life. It was supposed to be a cute "See you later joke", and Lucifer would always yell at him for being a bother, even though he really just didn't want to see Daniel hurt again.
"Maybe."
He kissed his lover's cold lips for the last time. Bittersweet memories of the past hundred years, all flew through his mind at once, and he could feel Daniel's soul leave his body. It lingered for a while, as he took his last breath, and his sky blue eyes, which were always so cocky, lost their colour. His skin was pale and colourless.
Lucifer held him close, still not wanting to let go, as the emotion of pure grief filled him, and he threw his head back in anguish. It was over. His fever dream. The bright days, the days of happiness would be over. As dark clouds gathered, he felt the same as when he lost his sister.
"Is he really gone?"
"Yes. Forever.", he rested his hand on the small child's head. "I'm sorry you had to be born this way."
The child took Lucifer's hand in his own small one, he stood up and smiled weakly. "He said to be happy. So please stop crying, and get up."
This one was different from Satan. Lucifer nodded and kissed his lover's corpse, before pulling the arrow out and tossing it aside. He was gone. There was nothing else they could do other than to see him off. He closed his eyes and picked his small body up with ease.
"Come along now. Your name is Deirdre. I promise I'll take care of you."
The child grabbed the hem of his shirt and nodded.
"Do you have anything you like?"
"No."
"Well, we'll have to fix that. Can't have another Avatar of Sorrow now can we?"
"There are only seven sins after all."
"Yes. Thank you little one."
"You're welcome. It's what he would have wanted."
