When it came to parenthood hybrids tended to experience more protective instincts than most, at least that’s what everyone said.
Wilbur had never thought this was true. A simple myth created about beings that didn’t roamed the mortal plane anymore, a way to fill in the history books quota for words, and nothing more. After all his own father was a hybrid and had always been very disengaged, not that he didn’t care at all Phil just tended to be very relaxed when it came to raising them. That’s what he told Tommy at least.
So taking that into account one had to understand his shock at seeing these rumored instincts at full play.
The first time he got to see them was when he and Schlatt were discussing were to put Tubbo’s crib and were he would be sleeping until they could get said crib.
Having parenthood sprung on you suddenly didn’t really give you ample opportunity to arrange the final details. As it were they still didn’t even stand fully on were to even live together or if they even should live in the same house.
It was for this reason that they had finally decided to put little Tubbo, how had barely left either of his parents arms in the few hours that he had been alive, in the middle of the bed between them and pray that neither one of them rolled over and ended up squishing him.
The arrangement had bin awkward at best, everything had still been up in the air with were there relationship stood and being confined to this small bed with a baby between them didn’t help, but they had both wanted to be there at a moment’s notice if Tubbo needed something.
Neither one of them had slept much that night to worried about the tiny life besides them to properly relax. And it wasn’t until sometime after midnight were Wilbur finally managed to drift off.
Wilbur couldn’t have been asleep for more than thirty minutes. When he was suddenly woken up by the sound of soft crying.
He groggily sat up for a moment very disoriented and very confused, he could have sworn he had fallen asleep on a bed and not the floor.
Looking around Wilbur came face to face with a very angry Schlatt glaring at him. It might have been intimidating if not for the fact that Schlatt was in his cartoony ram form holding a small baby close to his chest.
Wilbur almost let out a snort at the sight but managed to hold it in. Still half asleep he slowly started to inched his way onto the bed without breaking eye contact with a still glaring Schlatt.
Somehow managing to sit back up on the edge of the bed he calmly started to speak “Hey ther- “he started before finding himself back on the floor curtesy of an even more ticked off white ram.
There were two thought in his head as he sat on the floor. One and the most obvious is that he wasn’t going to be let up on the bed any time soon and second was the fact that somehow this small fluff sheep really had some force behind him, his side was probably bruised at this point from only two head butts.
At least that’s how he assumed that’s how he thought he ended up on the floor in the first place.
Reflecting on the fact that if he were to leave the room the next morning Schlatt would probably box his ear for leaving him alone with a baby when he wasn’t in the rite state of mind.
In hindsight maybe Wilbur was at fault for testing his luck, in his defense those sorts of thoughts didn’t normally come to someone in the early morning, it was time to try a softer approach.
Getting up on his knees he gradually started to move towards the bed holding out his hands. “Hey love, it’s just me no need to worry” he spoke in a calm tone.
Schlatt still didn’t seem particularly pleased with his presence but started to scoot closer, a now sleeping Tubbo still griped to his chest.
Wilbur smiled slightly slowly lowering his head onto the matrices slumping forward.
Not being absolutely able to see what was going on Wilbur waited until he felt Schlatt approaches him. After a few minutes of hesitation, he felt the ram lean down and sniff his hair before slowly placing a hand on top his head.
Schlatt must have either reconsider him or conclude he was safe because he felt a sudden pulling at his sleeve indicating for him to climb up onto the bed.
Relief flooded Wilbur’s system he adjusted himself back on the bed trying to not disturbed the sleeping infinite or white ram.
Schlatt gave him anther long look before nodding his head. The action more of a reflexing of satisfaction at the new arrangement than a confirmation to Wilbur.
Laying down on his back Wilbur felt as Schlatt placed down Tubbo near him before laying down himself. Looking over Wilbur saw That Schlatt had opted to lay down “loaf” style, or the closest thing he could get to making himself a loaf in his cartoony form, next to Tubbo curling around him protectively.
Wilbur turned toward the two smiling at the sight. He fell into a peaceful sleep at the sight recording the event in his head as future blackmail.
