Chapter 1: Chapter 1
Chapter Text
It's was nice day. The sun was shining brightly and cool breeze rustled the various branches of the trees. Tommy watched quietly from his window. He was perched rather unsteadily a top an old clothing rack. The rack had wheels, and Tommy was used to constantly having to catch himself if it suddenly moved. Though after a year of practice, he'd become quite good at it.
He sighed, and looked longingly down at the lock on the window.
It was rusted and broken. Long gone where the days it could open. He pressed his face against the glass, and scanned the ground below. It was Autumn so there was a thick layers of leaves scattered beneath the trees. Beautiful fiery reds and oranges seemed to stretch as far he could see. It was magical.
He slowly slid his eyes form the horizon down into his own garden. It wasn't really a garden, just a small patch of overgrown grass. The only trees that stood anywhere near it where evergreen, so the magnificence of the outside world just seemed to drain away as you got closer. However something caught his eye. There, in this own garden, was a scarlet red leaf. His eyes widened and his mouth fell open; for a moment he lost balance.
He snapped back to reality, and quickly adjusted himself accordingly. Stealing one more quick glance at the leaf, he made up his mind. He was getting it.
He swung carful down from the rack, and placed himself softy on his feet. Grabbing a thin worn jumper he briskly walked across the room and into the hallway. He wasn't allowed to have his door closed and for once it benefited him. The hallway was hard and creaky, but he had experience and was able to navigate it easily. Once he reached the top of the stairs he poked his head over the broken banister; the room below lay empty and untouched.
Satisfied, he walked down the stairs, past the furniture in the living room, and to the back of the kitchen where the back door was. It was pretty well hidden by the pile of unused stuff constantly tossed in its direction. Luckily he was small.
He slipped though the gap in the door and crept onto the small unkept area of grass. It was cold. The tall wall's blocked out any warm evening light, so the garden remained in a state of morning dampness.
He saw the leaf immediately. Amongst the dark shades it glowed; projecting a red light onto the green below. He dashed over and knelt down beside it. Moving his hands slowly as he picked it up, as if afraid it might shatter between his fingers. His eyes shimmed as he stood up, the leaf still held gently in one hand. He held it up the sky, trying to picture what an entire tree full of them would look like.
His eyes broke from it and wandered over to the long vines of ivy coving the wall.
He could climb them.
There was no doubt. If he used the thick vines, he could pull himself up and over the wall. He quickly checked behind him. Liam wouldn't notice; he never did. Tommy placed the leaf down and ran his hand over the lower ivy branches, before reaching up and firmly grabbing one above, which he easily pulled himself up to.
His heart raced as he began to climb faster. He could see a slither of light slicing though the darkness overhead. He wanted to touch it, too feel it's warmth. It came closer, and closer, until suddenly his head broke past the sunlight and he sat in speechless awe at the spectacle before him.
It was ten times better than the view form the window. The colour more vibrant, and the light even more radiant. I wide smiled spread across Tommy's face. He took a deep breath, feeling the last of the evening light warm the air in front of him. It was so inviting that he couldn't help but lean into it.
Suddenly his hand slipped. He yelped and went tumbling over the wall, landing with a soft thud.
He quickly shuffled and sat up. But wait. Nothing hurt?
He looked around him, discovering that his fall had been softened by a rather large pile of leaves. He examined himself, but the only damage was a small scrape on his hand and a couple of damp patches on his clothes.
After he had made sure the scrap wasn't serious, he squirmed out of the pile; getting up steadily, and brushing himself off.
That's when he realise where he was. He was outside. In the forrest.
Panic filled him. He whipped his head to look at the the wall behind him. It still loomed menacingly, it's bricks were darker, more stained and worn. It was probably meant to be seen from this side; and yet here he was. His eyes darted around it searching for a way to get back up.
He found it.
There was a small drain pipe positioned beside the neighbouring wall. He was light enough not to damage it, and once he reached the top he could easily jump back on his wall. So he went to grab it.
But something stopped him.
Maybe it was the way the wind sounded as it rustled the leaves. Maybe it was way the leaves fluttered below his feet, occasionally flicking up a flying toward the forrest, as if they were leading him. Maybe it was simply the fact that he dreaded to return home and never see this place again.
Slowly he pulled his hand away from pipe; turning back to forrest.
This could be his only chance. He might as well take it.
So, against his better judgement stepped into the forrest. At first he walked cautiously, double checking behind him constantly, but as he got more comfortable, he began to notice the environment around him.
His eyes stuck to a small bird perched atop a tree, its head was nested neatly under it wing. He watched it preen it self, and for some reason he was absolutely fascinated. Each little movement of feathers seemed so precise and natural.
He could of stayed there for hours, but both him and the bird where suddenly disturbed by a loud crack echoing form from somewhere nearby. Tommy started, and instinctively dashed behind the tree.
The bird spread its scarlet wings and took of quickly. Tommy watched it; momentarily put back in his trance, but the sound of voices drew his attention back to the source of the crack.
They were moving closer.
Tommy tensed and held himself tightly against the tree.
"Great job Techno!" he heard one say, "Now we have to take care of that poor tree". The voice sounded annoyed, so Tommy was extremely wary. He knew the consequences of bothering someone when they were annoyed.
"I didn't mean to" he heard a new voice answer. "It just- it got in the way"
The new voice was more subtle and reserved. Even some what forced.
He wanted to see who it was, so he began shifting to look out.
There was a sigh, "It's fine" came the first voice "We can just-"
They paused. Tommy was confused, why did they stop?
His curiosity got the better of him and he finally got the courage to poke his head out. What he saw immediately terrified him.
There were two people, children like him, though clearly older.
The person in front was tall, with brown hair and a brown eyes. He was wearing a warm yellow jumper and simple jeans. There was a beanie on his head and a long scarf wrapped loosely around his neck. He looked handsome and quite charming, and Tommy felt a welcoming aura form him.
The other person was a similar height, however he had bright pink hair and striking red eyes. He had large floppy pig-like ears and two small tusks were protruding from his mouth. He was also wearing jeans but instead of a jumper he had a large brown jacket with fur lining the neck and cuffs.
He wasn't particularly startled by their appearance. It was the fact that the red eyes were glued to him, that made his heart stop.
In panic he desperately tried to hide himself, but it only exposed him more. This caught the attention of the other boy. Who followed the other's line of sight until he saw Tommy. He looked surprised.
Tommy froze.
"Uh hello?" called the boy. "Can we help you?"
Tommy didn't answer, still holding the tree as if it were his lifeline. The boy started to slowly pace towards him, holding his hands in front of him non threateningly.
"Are you alright?" asked the boy softening his voice. It was comforting, and Tommy found himself starting to relax. He was hesitant but slowly nodded.
"That's good" said the boy smiling. "What's your name?"

Tommy was silent. Concerned by the apparent lack of fear of free he felt. It wasn't often he trusted strangers, and yet the overwhelming dread wasn't there. Beucase of this it took him a moment to remember that he should probably answer.
So he muttered his name quietly, trying to avoid making eye contact.
"I didn't quite hear that sorry" said the boy apologetically.
Tommy took a deep breath and semi straightened up. "It's- it's Tommy" he said finally meeting the boys gaze.
The boy smiled softly and slowly crouched down to match Tommy's height."Okay then" he said holding his hand out, "I'm Wilbur"
Tommy flinched from the sudden movement.
Realising it was a handshake he quickly rushed to return it, ending up shaking Wilburs hand once firmly, before immediately letting go.
Wilbur didn't expect the quick sequence of events, and when Tommy pulled his hand back and stood looking awkward, and slightly embarrassed, Wilbur couldn't help but laugh.
It was Tommy turn to be surprised. "I-I'm sorry?" he said with confusion.
"That was the weirdest handshake I've ever had" said Wilbur still half laughing.
Tommy went red, "I'm not used to it" he said softly.
Wilbur looked a him grinning. "It's fine, you just reminded me of Techno"
Tommy tilted his head. "Techno?"
Wilbur nodded "He's the scary looking one over there" he said gesturing to the other boy, who was still standing stiffly a few feet away.
Tommy looked over. He could understand where Wilbur was coming from when he said scary, and yet about him seemed passive and gentle, and he got the same safe vibe he did from Wilbur. If anything Tommy thought he looked more cool.
"He doesn't look scary" he said as he continued examining Techno.
Wilbur paused, and watched Tommy. Usually kids were absolutely terrified of Techno, running and screaming if he came too close. One time they were spreading horrible rumours about Techno's origin. Calling him and monster, and telling him go back to the nether.
Why was this kid different? He had to find out. Which meant...
"Hey Techno!" Wilbur called. "Come here!"
Techno looked startled, but after receiving a confirming nod he hesitantly made his way over. Tommy didn't move, and when Techno got there he just stared at him mystified his mouth slightly open. Techno looked uncomfortably down at Tommy and then to Wilbur, who shrugged.
"I like your eyes" said Tommy suddenly, his eyes wide. "They look like those red crystals.. what were they.." he trailed off. "Rubies!" he said smiling.
Techno was thrown off by the statement. He awkwardly nodded, and glanced around. Tommy had completely forgotten about being cautious, and his face was filled with childish wonder. Techno was possibly the most interesting person Tommy had even seen and he wanted to know all about him.
"Why do you have pig ears?" asked Tommy innocently, pointing to Techno's ears. "Oh and tusks!"
Techno said nothing. He was staring out to the side and seemed rather pre-occupied nervously fiddling with his hair. Tommy waited patiently, eyes fixed on Techno.
Techno looked desperately over to Wilbur for help.
"Oh uh, he doesn't talk" said Wilbur suddenly.
Tommy looked at him confused. "But, earlier I.. heard?"
"Oh" said Wilbur before pausing. "Well... He can only talk to certain people, and he just doesn't like it otherwise"
Tommy didn't really understand, but he realise that how his questions were clearly making Techno uncomfortable, so he nodded understanding , and shifted his attention to Wilbur instead.
"Soooo, what were you guys doing? asked Tommy "I heard this loud noise"
Wilbur grinned, quickly standing, "I'll show you"
He walked briskly over to a large oak tree. Tommy watched quietly. Wilbur stopped and reached behind the tree retrieving up a well carved yet rather beaten up wooden sword. He turned around showing it off proudly. Tommy's face immediately switched from curious to petrified.
So they were going to hurt him.
Why did he ever think he could trust them?
He began backing away, his steps becoming faster and more frantic by the second. Wilbur's face dropped. He let go of the sword and held his hands in front of him again, but Tommy didn't stop. That was until his attempt to scramble away made him trip.
He yelped, but to his surprise he didn't hit the ground, instead falling against the strong truck of a tree. Techno glanced over to Wilbur with concern, but Wilbur's face was laced with fear.
"H-Hey" said Wilbur, " It's okay, calm down."
But his voice was uncertain.
Tommy wasn't convinced, pressing further up against the tree. He felt the rough bark against his hand, and an idea blossomed in his mind. He flicked his eyes backwards, locating the nearest branch. Without hesitation he grasped it and effortlessly pulled himself up, repeating this technique until he was certainly out of reach.
He didn't realised how high he'd climbed until looked down. The ground was far bellow, a golden blanket. Wilbur and Techno were both standing amidst it shocked. He smiled to himself, but it didn't last long as he felt his stomach drop.
This was certainly much higher than he was used to.
"That was amazing!" called Wilbur.
Tommy forced his fear down for a moment. "Go away!" He shouted, before getting intimidated by his altitude once again, and clinging tightly to the branch.
"Are you good?" he heard Wilburs cornered voice come from below.
He didn't answer this time, trying to focus on his breath. It was shaky and fast, and despite his best attempts it stayed that way. Wilbur was saying something but it didn't register as he began tune out the world, focusing in on his mind; a coping mechanism he'd used for years. He wasn't sure how long he stayed like that, but it felt like hours. The state was broken and he was ripped violently out of his head, by a gently placing of a hand on his shoulder.
He jumped pulling away. He almost fell, but his instincts kicked it and he was soon stable again. After which he turned his head in order to identify the culprit. His 'attacker' was none other than Techno sitting nervously on the branch, his hand still hovering in the spot Tommy's shoulder had been.
Tommy slowly re-adjusted to reality. His face felt hot, and slightly damp. Had he been crying?
"What's going on?" yelled Wilbur. "Is he ok?"
Tommy craned his neck to see him, but withdrew it rapidly, as the ground seemed to fall away . He shuddered, and in the corner of his eye he saw Techno trying to approach him again.
He leaned to the side, and almost lost his grip, fumbling for a moment. Techno was clearly unprepared for the situation and resorted to trying to signal with his hands frantically.
This didn't help.
Tommy only shuffling further down the thin branch, getting dangerously close to the end of the stable part. Seeing this Techno stopped his desperate movements.
After a moment of thought he held out a single hand to Tommy.
Tommy stared at it, then up at Techno. He was once again draw to to those eyes. He didn't know exactly what about them, but there was a kindness sparkling somewhere below the surface, a type you can't fake.
So he took the hand. Without even realising.
Techno's grip was strong, but not painful. His hand silently guided Tommy towards the trunk. As he neared the end a small unexpected twig managed to in unbalanced him. Usually he wouldn't have easily caught him self, but due to Techno's hand he couldn't.
Terror sunk in a he slipped to the side, but before he could fall, he felt a strong tug on his arm, and he was pulled forward.
Techno held Tommy pressed against himself, it was secure. Tommy' chest rose and fell quickly as he tried to regain to composer, his fists tightening around the fabric of Techno's jacket.
Techno tensed, but after a moment he placed his hand on his back and began stroking it comfortingly. It was safe. He liked it.
Tommy remained firmly attached.
His mind told him to scamper off again, and yet he didn't.
After a couple of moments Techno stopped comforting him and took a hesitant step down onto a branch below. His movement was slowly and unthreatening, so Tommy remained still. After the step, Techno checked on him, but Tommy hadn't change, and didn't show any signs of wanting to let go, Techno continued down the tree, becoming slightly faster and swifter as they neared the bottom, until finally they reached the base of the tree.
He kept holding Tommy for a moment. Letting him realise that was safe now. Tommy eyes scanned the area quietly, alerting Techno to the fact he was ok, which allowed him to slowly place a still shaky Tommy on the ground.
His feet were unsteady for a moment. He wobbled and Techno quickly went to catch him.
Luckily he only swayed, and was able to regain his steadiness. He took a deep breath that was cut off suddenly as he saw Wilbur begin to trot over. His face a mix of worry and excitement. Tommy yelped and took a couple of paces back towards Techno, gripping to trim of his jacket. The excitement in Wilbur face quelled significantly, and he stopped.
"Oh, I'm sorry" he said.
There was a tinge of sadness in his voice, and it made Tommy feel bad for his strong reaction. Techno stood looking helplessly between the two. Finally he'd focused on Wilbur, signing something along the line of. 'Apologise perhaps?', causing Wilbur to nod and turn cautious to Tommy.
"I'm sorry if a scared you, we mean no harm. Really." he said fiddling with his fingers.
"But" hesitated Tommy, "Then why do you have swords? Aren't they for hurting people?"
Wilbur's eyes lit up with realisation. "What?! Oh- nonono..." he said quickly "We just use them to.. practice? No" he struggled to find the words. "A game!" he said suddenly "It's like a game."
This caught Tommy's interest. He'd never properly played a game with other people before. "A game..?" he said softly, interest rising once more in his meek voice.
Wilbur nodded. "Yeah! It's a fun game!"
Tommy paused, before shyly letting go of Techno's jacket. "Could.." he started. "Could I see..?"
Wilbur's previous excitement returned and he grinned widely. "Sure!" he said, but his face dropped momentarily. "But don't be scared... we aren't hurting each other, at all."
Tommy nodded, and watched as Wilbur slowly retrieved his sword, constantly glancing over at Tommy to make sure he was okay. Tommy tensed as it appeared, but managed to remain calm. To Tommy's surprise he retrieved another. Techno shifted beside him, before walking ofer to join Wilbur, taking the sword as it was offered to him.
Tommy held his breath. In the back of his mind he could picture them suddenly jumping at him and attacking. It terrified him, yet he stayed.
Wilbur was the first to move, holding the sword if front of him with one hand, and positioning his body in a fighting stance. Techno mirrored this, but - in Tommy's opinion, with much more grace and skill. His stance, grip, posture ; it was clear he was the more experienced of the two. Tommy gazed in anticipation as they begin to move, slowly at first, as if they where setting out boundaries, but gradually becoming quicker and more precise.
There blade were soon, swishing beautifully in a rapid set of moments, cutting and slicing through the air. Tommy was entranced, he'd never seen fighting as anything other than a series of sloppy attacks. This was something else, a complicated dance that he'd didn't fully understand. He found himself standing in awe as it progressed.
However, it didn't last long. Wilbur was Cleary out matched, and Techno was able to organise his maneuvers, disarming Wilbur, leaving his sword to tumble onto the soft ground. Wilbur sighed mumbling something in annoyance, but then turned back to Tommy smiling.
"So what'd you think?"

Chapter Text
Tommy had spent the next couple of minutes rambling about all the little details he'd noticed in the display. Wilbur and Techno stood and listened, barely able to keep up with the rapid succession of words spilling from Tommy's mouth. They had at least expected him to be somewhat hesitant, yet the fear had once again vanished, leaving air with a steady excitement.
The flow was finally broken by Wilbur.
"So you liked it?" he asked cautiously.
"Yes! It was so cool!"
Wilbur beamed, then relaxed, the tension resolved.
"Why don't we go sit down?" he said, stretching his arms.
Tommy agreed with a brisk nod, so Wilbur led him over to a couple of thick fallen logs. Tommy attempted to sit, however the mossy surface caused him to slip quickly onto the ground. He grumbled, but after a brief chuckle, Wilbur hoisted him back onto his feet, and he was able to sit normally.
They began talking again, expect this time Wilbur was actually able to be a part of the conversation, even occasionally translating for Techno, giving him input as well.
Tommy was in the middle of another excited rant when he was interrupted by a scoff from Wilbur.
"What?" he asked in confusion, looking up and tilting his head.
Wilbur's laughter only threatened to escape more. "I'm sorry, it's just, I was thinking about how you climbed up the tree earlier"
Tommy's confusion grew. "What about it?" he asked curiously.
"You looked like a raccoon"
There was a beat of silence, broken by a light muffed chuckle from Techno, followed quickly by Wilbur bursting into laughter.
Tommy flushed red, his eyes flicking between the two. "I did not!" He said angrily, crossing his arms with a huff.
"You absolutely did " Wilbur managed to squeeze in between his bouts of laughter.
"Why a raccoon?!" he said flinging his arms out with frustration. "Raccoons are stinky!"
"Exactly" Wilbur said grinning.
He let out an offended gasp, which set Techno into full on laughter.
He felt a smile start to tug at the corners of his own mouth, Wilbur saw it and took it as a challenge.
"Is that a smile?" he said, smirking.
"No!" said Tommy, turning his head away.
"Ok then" Wilbur remarked casually, he fixed his eyes on Tommy. "Don't smile"
Tommy's eyes wandered back to Wilbur, he attempted to suppress the smile but he could feel the giggles building inside him.
"Donnttt smmiille" continued Wilbur grinning wider. "Dontttt"
It was becoming increasingly harder for Tommy to stop himself bursting into laughter, the smile creeping up his face.
"Dooonn't dooo iitt"
Techno was watching the game unfold,a sneaky smile on his face. Happy that for once he wasn't the victim. Though it seemed Tommy's tolerance was low, the trick took effect immediately.
Tommy's muffled a giggle. He was clearly smiling now, yet Wilbur continued.
"Nooo smillinggg"
That was the final straw, Tommy burst into a fit of giggle, putting his hands up to his mouth.
Wilbur let out a dramatic sigh. "I thought I said not to smile?" he said with fake annoyance, yet pride showed in his voice and laced his face.
"That's not fair" Tommy muttered, through his laughter. "You made me!"
"I didn't say anything," said Wilbur smugly.
Tommy grumbled, looking at Wilbur annoyed, "Then how did you-?"
"Practice" nodded Wilbur
"Teach meee" whined Tommy.
"A magician never reveals-"
A loud bird call echoed from somewhere close by, breaking through the still air. Wilbur turned and scanned the tree line, his eyes narrowing on a particular spot. Tommy followed his line of sight, until he finally saw the object of Wilbur's focus.
His eyes widened, it was the same bird from before.
"Oh" said Wilbur nonchalantly "That's our queue to leave"
Tommy looked at him amazed. "The bird?"
Wilbur nodded. "He's like an old friend, well, it's hard to explain"
The bird crowded again, it's voice sharp and short . It was impatient, that call had seemed clearer. More understandable. He almost whistled back.
"Are you cool to get home?"
Tommy jumped, before stuttering. "Oh, uh yeah"
There was another moment of silence. Except the air wasn't filled with joy. It was filed with the fog of a parting, a goodbye.
"Then this is goodbye?" Said Tommy sadly.
Wilbur shook his head firmly. "We'll invite you when where next here. Whereabouts do you live?"
Tommy pointed in the direction of his house, trying to comprehend how on Earth they could invite him.
"But how-"
Another shrill call pierced the air.
"Trust me you'll know"
And with that Wilbur grabbed Techno and the two darted quickly into the trees. Tommy listen to the thud of their footsteps until he could anymore. His lips felt dry. He wondered if maybe he'd just dreamt them.
The last remnants of dusk had trickled from in between the leaves, and seeped into the ground, making it glow warmly against the growing darkness of the night. His footsteps made the ground crunch louder than ever, and the shadow merged and changed with every passing minute.
As the last embers of the day disappeared form the Forrest. So did he.

Tommy's eyes fluttered open. The light of morning scattered hazily around him. He groaned and rubbed his eyes, blinking a couple of times as he observed his situation.
However, there was nothing exciting, he was just met by the view of his messy room.
𝘛𝘢𝘱 𝘛𝘢𝘱
"Coming" he mumbled absently. Liam often woke him up early, with some pointless chore or task. He flung off the covers and let himself slide off the bed.
𝘛𝘢𝘱 𝘛𝘢𝘱
He briskly made his way to the door. Trying to fluff his bed hair to to some acceptable state. He gripped the door knob and turned it, the door opened creakily.
"What do you want?"
He didn't get an answer. Probably, because there was no one there. In fact the hallway showed no signs of movement. Tommy poked his head out in confusion but found nothing.
𝘛𝘢𝘱 𝘛𝘢𝘱
The sound was from behind him, coming from his room. He looked over his shoulder in confusion, but he was meet by the same silence.
"What the-?”
𝘛𝘢𝘱 𝘛𝘢𝘱
He lifted his head to locate the source of the noise. His eyes widened, and his mouth fell agape. There sitting outside the window, was the bird. It crooked it's head at him, and let out a sharp whistle. He blinked cluelessly at it. It repeated its call, and tapped firmly on the window.
"Oh! You want to be let in!"
Tommy quickly darted across the room, and pulled himself up to the rack. He leant towards the window and looked down at the lock. His face dropped. That's right. Broken.
He looked at the bird, who sat quietly observing him.
"Stay there, I- I'll come in a sec"
He landed on the floor and dashed out though the pre-opened door, not caring about the noise he made. It didn't take him long to run down the stairs and to the back door. He carelessly shoved his shoes on and slid it open.
He stepped out into the chilled morning air, craning his head up towards his room. The bird was gone from outside his window, now perched patiently on garden wall.
Once it saw him it began chirping and hoping around merrily.
Tommy chuckled. "Good morning!" he said happily. "It nice to see you"
The bird seemed to reciprocate his hello, singing loudly and flapping its small wings a couple of times. The petit creature swooped down and landed a few feet away.
Tommy froze, afraid he might scare it off, but the bird continued to hop about as if he wasn't there.
"Woah" gaped Tommy in awe. "I've never seen a bird this close"
He crouched down held his hand out carefully, and to his surprise the bird approached it. Tommy was completely still. The bird looked directly into his eyes, chirped, flew straight up above his head, and glided off to the side.
Tommy followed it. Soon it land on the wall were the thick layers of ivy grew. The realisation finally came to mind.
"You want me to come?"
The bird whistled and turned to face the forrest. That was enough confirmation for Tommy, and he began his climb. It was easier than the day before, his hand moving naturally to the slots in the wall he'd discovered prior. His golden tumble of hair, soon poked over top, followed by the rest of his head.
The forrest had maintained its golden glow and magnificence. Yet today he had less time to admire it as a small streak of red zoomed past his head. The bird hovered for a moment in the air before him, then fluttered down to the nearest branch.
Tommy looked down. Last time he'd simply fallen down, but he wasn't risking that again. Instead he used the same drainage pipe he'd seen on his first outing. He slid down it with ease; his feet crushing the semi soggy leaves pressed against the walls.
It was some what misty, a heavy blanket of cloud having consumed the surrounding area. The forest it self all the more mystical, and deep. Tommy concealed his intrigue, focused on attending his little guide. Said guide was currently preening its wings as it awaited him.
Tommy went forward to the tree, shallow drops falling and settling upon his bare arms. In his rush, he'd completely forgotten to change. It wasn't like he was in pyjamas; he didn't have any, he was wearing a thin short sleeve T-shirt and shorts with were certainly not suitable attire.
The bird flapped on the next tree; Tommy followed. Once he had gotten to that tree the bird flapped to the next. They continued this game, the bird stopping and waiting for Tommy each time, who was quite enjoying it. He didn't realise just how far they'd traveled till he hear the familiar voice.
"Tommy!"
He looked up to see Wilbur grinning and waving at him.
Tommy blinked, so it wasn't a dream. He rubbed his eyes, closing and reopening them several times, just to make sure; but Wilbur didn't disappear. If fact he had been joined by an other figure. Techno.
He could feel an overwhelming rush of happiness shoot through him. It wasn't a dream, it really wasn't. He waved back. Standing up on his tippy toes, and reaching as high as he could, afraid that there was some chance they might not see him.
Of course this was false, and the two figures collectively returned his gesture; though Wilbur with a bit more enthusiasm.
"What are you waiting for!?" called Wilbur, signalling him to approach. "Come on!"
His legs felt like stone, but quickly, they lightened, and without a second thought Tommy raced ahead. The wind rushed, pulling his hair back flatly against his head. The once smothering fog parted as he went, trailing behind him in white streams of mist.
It wasn't long till the figures became people. Real people. People he met. People he knew. People that were his fri-
𝘚𝘮𝘢𝘤𝘬.𝘛𝘩𝘶𝘥.
Then laughter.
"It's good to see you too"
In his pure exhilaration, he may or may not have forgot what exactly he was running towards.
The object in question was Wilbur. Which lead to him unintentionally full force tackling him to the ground. Luckily for Tommy, Wilbur had been tossed around an ungodly amount of times by Techno when they were younger, so a tackle from a six-year-old wasn't going to do much.
"MORNING" yelled Tommy, his excitement clearly seeping out in his words, "I mean, morning" he repeated shyly.
This prompted nothing but warm laughter from Wilbur. "God, you really are like Techno" he said smiling.
Oh yeah, Techno! He eyed the surrounding air, finding him placed a couple of paces from the current predicament. He stood with a small smirk, having been extremely relived he wasn't the one in Wilbur’s position.
"Do you tackle people too?" asked Tommy, far to innocently.
Techno was immediately thrown off. He pinned Tommy with a look of such genuine confusion, that Wilbur was hardly able to breath.
"So, big man?" Tommy pried.
Even if Techno had been able to talk, there would no answer he could possibly supply. So he just gazed down at Tommy bewildered.
"Tommy" exhaled Wilbur. "If you wouldn't mind?"
"Oh yeah" Tommy rolled of him in which he thought was a graceful way, tumbling into the ground.
"So what's with the intense greeting?" asked Wilbur, a grin still plastered on his face.
Tommy hummed unsurely. "I got distracted?"
"While running?" asked Wilbur sceptically.
Tommy nodded.
"Well next time, as least give me a warning so I can dodge" said Wilbur brushing off his knee's and hands in turn.
Tommy scoffed. "You should've been able to dodge by yourself."
Wilbur huffed and looked to Techno for back up. Techno just shrugged, and signed 'He's got a point'.
"I'm getting ganged up on" sighed Wilbur annoyed.
"Yeah, me and big tackle Techno gonna take you down", said Tommy confidently, puffing himself up, as he tried (and failed), to loom over Wilbur.
Techno was more than happy to join the game, standing next to Tommy, and making him look far more intimidating in the process.
Wilbur glanced between the two, he needed a diversion. "Look behind you" he said pointing toward a spot over Tommy's shoulders.
Tommy looked; nothing. He was about to question Wilbur, but when his head swivelled back, he was gone, darting between the tree in an attempt to escape.
"GET HIM" echoed Tommy launching himself into a sprint.
Techno obliged, swiftly swooshing past him, and gaining rapidly on Wilbur.
"THIS ISN'T FAIR" shouted Wilbur desperately, his chase being cut all too short by the firm hand of Techno fastening on his arm.
Tommy grinned as he trotted happily over to his now captured victim. "So, Mr Criminal, any last words"
Wilbur sighed. "Only one"
He jerked suddenly, loosening Techno's grip enough to slip himself out. He took the opportunity to grab Tommy and lift him up. "Gotta"
Tommy gaped and squirmed frantically. "TEchnoo HelpppP!" he called, reaching in the hopes of a stray branch.
Techno watched smiling, and shook his head.
"NOOoooO" whined Tommy. "Betrayallll"
"You reign of terror is over raccoon!" said Wilbur dramatically, lifting him towards the sky.
"Haha! You underestimate- wait, raccoon?!. I'M NOT A RACCOON!", he insisted angrily.
"Are too" argued Wilbur smugly.
"Am not!" Tommy shot back aggressively.
"Are too, and you know it!" said Wilbur firmly.
Tommy took his as his opportunity for revenge. So, he pulled in his feet and kicked out into Wilbur. Hard.
Wilbur dropped him instantly, at which point he made his getaway, giggling and hopping between thick roots.
Yet when he glanced back, he wasn't being chased as expected, instead he was only met by a crushing wave of guilt.
Chapter 5: Chapter 5
Chapter Text
He knew he'd fucked up. Wilbur was now doubled over, clutching his middle, face twisted in pain.
Techno was in an equally distraught state, a mixture of confusion and worry. He soothed Wilbur best he could with a gentle hand, but without the addition of his soft monotone voice, it did little more than assisting in drawing Wilbur's attention elsewhere.
Tommy could feel his heart begin to reflect his mind, it's pace quickening. Yet rather than drawing his body away form the situation, his legs moved him unwilling towards it. Words fumbled uselessly thought his brain, falling out hopelessly as, "M'sorry"
That was terrible, he might as well just dash his way out of there. He fiddled with the skin on the tip of fingers, picking at it as he waited for something, anything, to happen.
"You better be- that hurt like hell"
Wilbur's voice was strained, annoyed, but not angry.
Tommy stared, he knows he shouldn't, but he couldn't help it. What a strange stranger. Stranger? Friend?
"Sorry." he repeated mindlessly, unable to produce anything of greater value.
Wilbur sighed straightening up with a strong breath. "It's alright, I've had worse"
He eyed Techno, giving him a not so subtle glare, before returning his attention to Tommy. He smirked, keen to continue the game. With a shuffle of leaves he jumped towards Tommy, intending to hold him hostage once again, yet it didn't produce the reaction he'd hoped for.
Tommy flinched sharply and looked up at Wilbur with fear. Reading the situation Wilbur immediately lightened,
"Hey, whoa... you good?"
Tommy's expression was calm, yet saturated in fear all the same. "I'm sorry, I- I'm really sorry"
"It's..fine" said Wilbur slowly, drawing back. "I'm not angry at you"
Lies. Tommy held himself further backwards, hands towards his chest. They always said that.
Techno noticed the distinct withdrawal. He noted it in the back of his mind for a later date, taking this opportunity to step forward and crouch so he was at eye level.
So he didn't speak. He didn't need to.
Tommy looked a him cautiously for a moment, but just as Techno thought, the child soon found himself starting straight back. Come again becoming enamoured by the scarlet hue of the older's eyes.
When he meet the gaze, he found no aggression in it. It told him he was safe. He took a deep breath, and relaxed himself. His position shifting from its defensive form.
Techno reached out a hand ever so slightly. Tommy didn't flinch, and let Techno's hand settle on his shoulder.
"I'm ok" he muttered. "Thank you"
Wilbur joined Techno, looking guilty. "I really didn't mean to come of so aggressive."
Tommy shook his head and looked down at the dirt. "It's my fault I overreacted"
The small party was basked in an awkward silence.
Wilbur was the one to break it.
"I think we should do something else"
Tommy looked up at him curiously.
"How much of the forrest have you seen?" asked Wilbur, a subtle excitement brewing in his words.
"None really" said Tommy, before realising how pathetic that sounded, and rephrasing it. "Well, I've seen the edge, mostly. Oh, and this area of course"
Not a lie technically.
Wilbur's face lit up. "Then I think it's time we change that"
"What'd you mean?" said Tommy suspiciously. "It sounds like your about to kidnap me or something."
"I'm not a kidnapper" Wilbur huffed. "Plus if I was, I think I'd have better taste"
Techno punched Wilbur in the arm, and looked at him with a scowl.
Wilbur took the hint. "But, you know- I'm not or anything"
He took a deep breath. "What I meant, is that we should give a tour of the rest of the area. This is actually the most boring part"
"Really?" Tommy's mind filled with pictures of mystical images he'd seen in the old storybooks tucked away in the corner of his room. Scenes of fairies intertwined between glowing flowers and hanging vines flashed vividly in his mind.
"What's rest look like?" he pried.
"Guess you'll have to finding out" Wilbur stated boldly. Then remembering he shouldn't apply pressure added, "Only of you want to go of course!"
"Yes!" exclaimed Tommy, "Let's go now!"
Wilbur returned his enthusiasm. "Alright then!"
"Techno lead the way!" he said, shoving Techno in a random direction, and pointing forward over his shoulder.
Techno turned around a slowly pushed Wilbur's outstretched hand to a completely different point in the trees.
"Ah yes" said Wilbur. "That's totally where I meant to point"
Techno spared him a sceptical look before walking slowly towards the heavier foliage.
Wilbur glanced down to Tommy, who snickered. He grumbled at him, and Tommy covered his mouth in an attempt to stifle and giggles that escaped. Satisfied Wilbur looked back upward and announced proudly. "Onwards!"
—————————————
They marched forward, Techno in the lead, and Wilbur and Tommy following close behind. Tommy kept looking around hoping to catch a glance of something exciting, but the landscape remained identical.
He was beginning to think they might be messing with him, and even during the short duration of the walk he'd began to grown inpatient. "How long it'll we get thereeeee?" He drawled, tugging impatiently on Wilbur scarf.
"We've only been walking for like 5 minutes"
Tommy groaned. "Well it feels like we've been walking for 5 hours"
Wilbur scoffed and looked down at him. "You should try walking to our house"
"Is it far?" asked Tommy, his previous boredom forgotten immediately.
Wilbur nodded and hummed, his face laced with pride. "Yep, it's about a two hour walk from here"
Tommy gaped. "I think that more than I've ever walked in my life"
"Well telling by your current attitude, probably"
Tommy crossed his arms in protest, though he couldn't deny the truth of it.
Two hours sounded like a long way, far longer than his little legs had ever carried him.
"How do you even know how to get back?" he questioned, trying to comprehend such a journey.
Wilbur stopped, eyeing Tommy hesitantly.
Finally after a couple of seconds he crouched down.
"Okay, I'll show you, but you can't tell anyone alright?"
Tommy nodded enthusiastically, he'd never had a secret to keep before.
Wilbur scanned the trees around them, suddenly pointing out to a seemingly random spot.
"You see that"
Tommy couldn't see anything, just the same old trees.
"No" he huffed.
Wilbur sighed, "Look closer, there on the low down branch of that big one"
Tommy squinted as hard as his eyes could mange, and in fact did see something. A red ribbon had been tied to the base of the branch.
It's hue was similar to that of the leaves of the branch itself, making it almost impossible to distinguish. No wonder he couldn't see it at first.
He looked up to Wilbur who had stood up again.
"It's a ribbon"
Wilbur nodded, turning and walking again to catch up with Techno. "Yep, and there's a bunch of them, and there each tied on a branch that points home"
"How can you even see them?" continued Tommy confused as he trotted to keep up, "They look just like the leaves!"
"That's the point" said Wilbur with a grin. "Only we know there there, so only can use em"
"Why can only you them?" asked Tommy. "Do you not like anyone visiting you?"
Wilbur's smugness faltered, and Tommy got the feeling it was perhaps something that he didn't, or rather couldn't, understand yet.
"Yeah.." Wilbur thought over his words delicately, "It's so nobody... bothers us"
Tommy felt a little sad, that probably mean the wasn't allowed to visit either.
He kinda hoped he'd finally get to go over to someone house to play, just like the kids in the village were always doing.
Oh well, at least they could play in the forrest, it was probably a boring house anyway.
Suddenly a pair of hands were clasped over his eyes. He yelped at the sudden coldness.
"We're almost there so don't peek" said Wilbur, the likely owner of the freezing hands.
"You're hands are cold! Get em off!" he whined trying to pull the icy fingers off his face.
Wilbur chuckled. "Hold on, just couple more steps"
Tommy grumbled, but obliged, taking slow steps forwards as not to fall.
"Ready?"
Tommy hummed affirmatively.
Suddenly the hands were released form his eyes, he blinked as they adjusted to the new light and took in the scene before him.
It wasn't quite what he'd been expecting, no glowy fairies or mysterious plants, but it still made his eyes twinkle with wonder.
It was a waterfall, a rather small one to, but to a child who'd only ever seen such a thing in a picture book, it was the most amazing and fascinating thing in the world.
His mouth fell open in awe.
"Pretty cool right?" said Wilbur proudly.
"It's super cool! The coolest thing I've ever seen!" he said, bursting at the seems with untouched excitement.
"Can we play on it, or explore it, or- or climb to the top?!"
Wilbur's grin got even wider, the energy was infectious and it spreading fast.
"Of course!"
Tommy squealed. "Come on, come on!"
And they were off.
The hours stretched by, the time filled with laughter and fun.
Techno had helped Tommy brave the stones that crosses the river, and had hoisted him up onto the top of the overhang of the waterfall, where he claimed his title as king of the world.
Wilbur had told him all about how soon there would be salmon swimming in the river, how they had to battle there way upstream just to lay their eggs.
Tommy thought that was kinda gross, and he called Wilbur a 'fish nerd', which seemed greatly entertaining to Techno, who had to stifle his laughter under Wilbur's glare.
However, as the day progressed the shadows grew long once more, and the afternoon sky beckoned forth it's usual evening glow. Most of the thick fog had parted, so it's full glory was able to be enjoyed.
The trio played absentmindedly of the call of the growing night until the flicker and whistle of the robin echoed through the mist signalling that it was once again it was time to seperate.
"Promise you'll invite me tomorrow?" asked Tommy expectantly.
"Of course"
Tommy looked unsure, clearly still haunted by the possibility of abandonment.
Wilbur noticed, and after brief moment picked up the bright of the scattered Autumn leaves. He knelt down and pressed it between his and Tommy's palms, the thin leaf being the only thing separating them.
"It you get lonely, just find a maple leaf" he stared. "And pretend I'm on the other side"
The leaf felt damp, he held it tightly. "Thank you"
They bid each other goodbye, yet unlike the day before none felt the suffocating air of farewell.
Chapter Text
And so time passed.
Day after day Tommy would wait by the window till the robin came and beaconed him into the woods.
He came to recognise it's call, and despite telling himself it was impossible, he could've sworn that sometimes it actually talked to him.
Once he'd been scaling the garden wall as usually when suddenly there was a soft whisper of "Stone" above him.
He whipped his head upwards, startled by the possibility of another person being there, yet he was met with nothing. Just the site of the bird on top of the wall cocking it's head at him, a small pebble in its mouth.
He'd shaken it off, but similar incidents had only continued occur.
By now it was to the point where he wasn't sure if he was imagining it or down right insane, and he didn't know which was worse.
He remembered asking Wilbur about it during on of there escapades, casually remarking "Does your bird talk?"
Which did nothing more than earning an odd look and a, "I don't think so?"
Even if he was insane, he was far to distracted by his daily new discoveries to do anything about it.
He had only been exploring the forrest for two weeks, but it felt like he'd lived there his whole life.
He knew so much about it already! With a little assistance from Wilbur and Techno of course.
Wilbur loved the water. He'd continued to teach Tommy about the river, showing him every nook and cranny between the rocks, and gently pulling out little creatures for him to look at.
When he found out Tommy couldn't swim, he swore he'd teach him. Promising when the weather got warm they could all bring swimming costumes and travel down to the deeper water during the day.
Tommy didn't own a swimming costume, but that was a problem for future him.
He'd also found out that the weird hand gestures that Techno did was something called 'sign language' and it was a way for him to talk without using his voice.
He'd began to learn it himself. Though he wasn't best, he had started being able to understanding some of the things that Techno signed.
"Guess I'll have to find other way to exchange secrets" sighed Wilbur dramatically a smile tugging at his lips.
Tommy grinned, "I'm just too good, you'll have to share all your secrets with me now!"
Techno rolled his eyes, sighing 'No way gremlin'.
Which Tommy immediately demanded to know the meaning of as Wilbur burst out laughing at his side.
—————————-
It was late in the evening during one of the group's elaborate games of 'kingdom', when as usual came the telling call of the robin.
They had been building, for lack of a better word, a tiny shack. However, in there current game it was a great impenetrable castle.
Wilbur groaned, "Aww come on! We're almost done!"
Tommy looked at their work, it didn't really look done at all. But then again, he'd never built a castle before.
"We can finish it tomorrow" he piped in, going to put down handful of twigs he was holding.
Wilbur was silent for a moment but then straightened up. "No"
Both Tommy and Techno stared at him confused. After a moment Techno signed a 'What?'
Wilbur had a determined look on his face. "I said no" he grabbed a branch from their supply and lay it against the 'castle'. "We're not going till this is done"
Tommy shrugged, he had nowhere he needed to be anyway. Techno on the other hand didn't seem all to comfortable, sighing something, of which Tommy recognised 'Go' and 'Dark'.
"It won't take that long" Wilbur snapped firmly. "Plus we need to do it now otherwise everything will just fall over and we'll have to start again"
Techno looked like he wanted to argue back, but after moment of fiddling put his arms down, instead just nodding is response.
"Then we build!" announced Wilbur.
So they built.
Tommy didn't know how long they built until the shrill calls and chirps stops, but at some point they had, leaving Wilbur looking rather accomplished.
"See, no bird can tell us what to do!" he said proudly, sticking his chest out and smiling snuggly.
It wasn't long till they were almost in complete darkness, only shreds of light were still visible. Techno had continued to look more nervous as the light faded, glancing around every few second as if he expected to be suddenly attacked.
And while Tommy certainly didn't mind staying longer at first, the dark seemed to get more daunting by the second as the shadows pooled around the trees.
It was just as last glow sank over the horizon when he heard it. A bird call.
At first he though the though the robin may have returned, but then there was another, closer, louder, and far too deep to be a robin.
Then out of nowhere the call was above him, he craned his head up to look, squinting into the darkness.
And there it was.
Up on a branch of the tree above nearby, was a crow.
It was sat unnerving still, jet black feathers settled neatly by its side.
No only that, but it was most definitely glaring down beside him, in the direction of Wilbur and Techno. It's icy blue eyes unrelenting other from the occasional blink.
Was it even possible for bird to glare?
And then another caw, low, dangerous and drawn out. Why on earth was it so angry?
He looked over to Wilbur and Techno. However, they didn't look afraid, or confused, or even annoyed. Oddly enough, they looked guilty.
The kind of guilty you look when you've just been caught with your hand stuck in the cookie jar.
"Ah" said Wilbur quietly.
All of his cocky confidence that he'd been flaunting just seconds ago, had disappeared instantly. Techno on the other hand had the most 'I told you so' face Tommy had ever seen.
Needless to say, it didn't take long to put two and two together, "Oh! Is that bird a friend? Like the robin?"
Wilbur and Techno exchanged a brief glance, in which a myriad of emotions crossed over their faces. Wilbur was the one to eventually answer.
"Something like that" he said slowly.
Tommy took that as a yes, and his eyes lit up in excitement, "Now I got two bird friends and two non bird friends!" he paused looking up at the birdshyly ,"I mean only if you wanna be friends"
The crows attention shifted to him, and he could've sworn it's eyes softened, it definitely seemed to un-tense at least.
It spread its large wings and flapped, gliding down and landing on the soft ground. He bent down, gaping like he had with the robin.
However unlike the robin instead of skiting or fluttering away, the cow actually approached. Boldly hopping over in a very manner that caught him off guard.
Then, when it was fairly close, suddenly and without warning, it cawed, and then sprung up landing on Tommy shoulder.
Tommy let out an "Eep!" and stumbled to stand up. The crow wobbled for a moment but regained its balance quickly, bobbing its head to meet his.
His eyes sparkled as he gazed at it in amazement.
"Wow" said Wilbur. "Guess you're the bird man now"
Tommy looked over and frowned, scrunching up his face. "Oh come on! That's a terrible name, how's do you always make cool things sound lame?"
Wilbur shrugged, "Guess it's my talent, but it does only seem to work on you" he smirked, "Maybe it's cause you're lame?"
"I am not!" protested Tommy "I'm cool! In fact the coolest! The Superest Coolerest!"
Wilbur rolled his eyes. "Actually I would argue-"
The crow cawed sternly form it's place, and Wilbur hesitated, before sighing, "Fine, you're the 'Superest Coolerest' or whatever"
Tommy beamed with pride, "He already likes me the most! Take that wet boy!"
Wilbur looked at him uncomfortably. "Don't call me wet boy"
"Why not? You're always going on about the water"
"Just... no" drawled Wilbur facepalming.
Tommy felt the weight lift from his shoulder, and watched as the bird swooped over too Wilbur, squawking and pecking at his beanie.
"Okay okay geez" he complained shooing the unrelenting bird with his hand, "I'm coming!"
He offered a wave to Tommy "Same time?"
Tommy nodded. "Of course"
——————————————————————
Tommy hadn't really excepted to see the crow ever again.
On his journey home that night he'd concluded that it was most likely a sort of last resort, incase of night time shenanigans or lost children.
Either way he'd sadly accepted that they probably wouldn't cross paths often.
So you can imagine his surprise when the next morning there was an uncharacteristically rattling knock on the window, and when he stumbled out of bed to go check, he was met with those same icy blue eyes.
In fact he hadn't completely comprehended it until he was being guided though the forest by his new companion. At which point it all dawned immediately and made his heart swell excitedly.
Now, most mornings he was adapting to seeing either crow or robin on his window sill, or picking Will and Techno up at dusk.
Yet he came to realise both birds were wildly different in their mannerisms.
The robin was flighty, tweeting and cocking her head whenever he dared to get close. You know, normal bird stuff.
The crow was decidedly not, quite the opposite it fact. It was seemingly unfazed by things that would normally send a bird away in a panic.
For example a couple of days after their first encounter Tommy had thudded clumsily on the ground after tripping over, and instead of bolting like you'd except, it quickly flew down near him cooing softly as Wilbur made sure he was ok.
Maybe he really was a bird whisper, in which case he'd have some interesting things to thinks about.
An opportunity to do just that arose not long after as he found himself tossing and turning in bed one night. His skin was uncomfortably sore, he rolled over it an attempt to ease the discomfort.
It was probably cuase of that stupid plant he's found earlier that day.
Luckily Techno had found it before he could grab a handful for the hat they were making. He pointed to it, explaining how it was dangerous and make your skin all itchy and gross. 'Poison Ivy', of course it had a name like that.
Maybe Tech would know how to fix it, he hoped so, because his back was killing him.
Notes:
Sorry this is kinda short! I am sleepy :’)

Chapter Text
"And you're sure it's Ivy?"
"Uhhhh-yes?"
"You're.. absolutely terrible at lying"
Tommy grumbled, repressing the tempting urge to spring up and bash his head into Wilbur's chin.
"Am not" he argued.
"Are too-"
Techno huffed beside them, insistently signing to Wilbur once again, who sighed.
"According to Techno you didn't even touch it"
"Well, I didn't think I did, but it has to be that! What else could make my back all sore and itchy?" said Tommy crossing his arms firmly.
Wilbur shrugged. "I dunno, I'm not a doctor"
Tommy was growing more frustrated by the second, it seems he wasn't getting some miracle 'fix-it-all' cure like he'd hoped. "But ain't you like an expert on all this?!"
Techno snickered, earning a glare from Wilbur. Who looked down at Tommy "Well-" he hesitated "I'm not an expert, exactly"
"But you said that you know all about everything?" Tommy pressed, determined to walk away with at least a diagnosis.
"Oh...,did I say that?" muttered Wilbur.
Techno gave a smirk and a nod of conformation.
"Um, well- you know what, let me have another look"
Tommy obliged, turning away from Wilbur so his back could be examined.
There was a couple of prods around his shoulders here and there, but nothing much happened.
Then suddenly there was a soft press on his back, sending a sharp spike of pain up his spine.
He gasped so hard it felt like he'd been winded.
Wilbur pulled his hands back instantly. "Woah, you good? Did that hurt?"
Tommy shivered, mumbling a 'mhm' and trying to ignore the ripples of nagging pain still pulsing though him.
A gently hand was cautiously placed on his shoulder, looking up he was met with a rather concerned Techno.
He whined slightly, and the hand moved down to meet his own, a comforting hold.
"Soooo," drawled Wilbur, "Extremely sore back, got it"
There was about a minute more of cautious inspection before Wilbur stopped, not saying anything.
Tommy sat it the silence for a moment before, seeking and answer and turning around.
Wilbur looked conflicted, nose and eyes scrunched up, eyes deep in thought.
"Whats with weird the face? Tommy asked, poking him firmly.
Wilbur snapped out of his daze blinking for a couple of seconds. "Oh- it's nothing" he said waving his hand dismissively. He paused for a moment, before continuing, slower this time.
"Tommy... do you know about magic folk?"
He stiffened. Of course he did.
'Magic folk' were people. Or rather they were merely shadows of what used to be a person.
Twisted, distorted, wrong. They were unnatural, sporting a various of weird features. Some had part of animals fused to them, teeth, horns, claws, wings, you name it. Other had wild, powerful and dangerous magic, but they all had something in common.
They hunted humans.
Stalking into villages and towns at night, waiting in the shadows for they're chance to snatch some unsuspecting passerby. Or laying traps with promises of power, killing whoever dared to enquire.
Apparently it could be hard to spot one these days, due to how they could blend in with the nether hybrids, especially as the nether had recently opened its tightly shut barriers.
He'd even overheard once that apparently they were dying out. Something about 'years of breeding the magic out of them' that Tommy didn't understand.
He swallowed nervously, "Yeah, they're evil people right?"
Stubbly, ever so stubbly he saw Wilbur wince, a tint of sadness reflecting in his eyes.
"Mm, yeah, them" said Wilbur, his reluctant voice barely above a whisper. "Do you know any Magic folk.. or perhaps have have family members who are ones?"
Tommy eyes widened in fear.
Was his rash a curse? Was he going to become some monster? Was he going to die? Maybe some ancient uncle with claws as long as tree trunks was going to come a snatch him from his bed in the dead of-.
His hand was squeezed gently, and Techno offered him a reassuring look.
He took a deep breath. "I don't think so" his voice trembled as he spoke, doing a terrible job of masking his fear.
Wilbur looked serious. Too serious to be messing around. His eyes glazed over and he looked thoughtful again.
"Are they going to curse me?!" Tommy blurred out suddenly, unable to contain his worry.
Wilbur was taken a back, stumbling over his words, "N-no, it's not-"
Tommy felt his eyes unwillingly welling up. "They're going to come for me aren't they? They're going to snatch me up!"
"They won't hurt you" Wilbur said, his tone was more stern now, as if warning him not to push it.
Unaware Tommy continued frantically. "But- But they hunt people down, they take kids, they murder-
"NO THEY DON'T" snapped Wilbur, calm demeanour ripped away in an instant.
Tommy froze, gazing at him in shock.
But that wasn't Wilbur, not anymore. His Wilbur didn't have sharp teeth or eyes piercing, and his Wilbur absolutely didn't have a glare that told you that you were about to be ripped apart.
Then all at once it was Wilbur again, sporting a face of pure regret. "I- I'm sorry" he mumbled. "Yes, they do all that stuff"
Tommy may be young, but he wasn't stupid.
"You're one of them, aren't you?"
Wilbur stoped dead, the colour draining from his face.
"Tommy I-" He reached out gently.
Tommy felt a wave of terror crash over him as the situation dawned.
"Get away from me!" he yelled scrambling to his feet. "Your- your a monster!
He tried to ignore the heartbroken stare from Wilbur as he stumbled further back.
"You were just trying to use me for your evil magic!" He spat angrily, desperately trying to suppress the bubbling tears in his chest. "I trusted you!"
Wilbur was on his feet now, so was Techno, looking equally as distraught. "Tommy listen-"
But Tommy wouldn't listen, not this time. "No! Stay back!" he threatened, "Or else.... or else I'll make sure you get hunted down! I'll tell the hunters and they'll deal with you!"
Techno grabbed Wilbur's arm darting him a pleading look. "You wouldn't.." said Wilbur dumbfounded.
"Try me" growled Tommy, "I don't ever wanna see you again, got it!?"
Wilbur's pained expression turned to one of fury, "Fine, same here." he hissed, "Now get out of our forrest. You don't belong here anyway"
He didn't have to be told twice. He booked it, sprinting as fast as he could in the opposite direction without looking back.
Colours wizzed past him so fast he barely recognised them, only the bland outside wall finally gave him solidarity.
It gave him even more solidarity, when a rock tripped him up and he went barreling straight into it. He winced. Everything hurt, his back, his face, his heart and he couldn't do anything.
It's was all too much, overwhelming thoughts and feelings rushed over each other, he heaved and slumped down, shaking slightly. He was just a kid, a dumb gullible stupid kid.
So he did what any kid would. He tucked up his knees, sniffled, and began to cry.
———-
Not far away, a particular crow heard the mournful cries, and decided it was about time he made himself known.
His glossy wings spread out as usually, but this time there would be no beak to accompany them.
———-
Tommy wasn't sure how long stayed there, pressed against the cold wall, shivering as hot tears streamed down his cheeks.
It didn't matter anyway, nobody was waiting for him anywhere now. So he might as well just stay forever.
Yet at some point the sky grew overcast, and if just to spite him, brought forth a sudden shower of harsh beating rain.
The heavy droplets mixed with his tears, slipping quickly into the corners of his mouth. They tasted salty and bitter, yuck.
He spat on the ground and made a feeble attempted to shake water off his head. Still quivering all over he took a sharp breath and lifted himself up, glancing hopelessly up at the wall with fake determination.
His fingers felt icy, and the cold was stinging at his now soaked cheeks. A dull pain shot through the foot that had made him trip. He scowled at it, "Shut up." It evidently didn't listen, and continued to ache and complain, much to his annoyance.
He stomped, (well shuffled) over to the drain pipe, and clasped his sore hands around it as high as he could, attempting to hoist himself up as he usually did. However, when he slid his foot into a crevice to further push up, the little pain seemed to multiply tenfold.
He gasped as he lost his grip, and with a thud returned to the soggy ground, foot still throbbing, but now with the addition of an even more painful back.
The dam gates burst. He yelled out as loud a he possibly could, all his frustration and hurt being released as he shouted and grabbed anything nearby to pelt at whatever caught his eye. "Stop, Stop! STOP! WHY ARE YOU BEING SO MEAN"
"Am I being mean? I wasn't aware, my apologies"
He jumped, the pebble he was holding slipping from his fingers. His head whipped around to locate the voice, but he couldn't see anything.
"Thats better, no more rock throwing. Someone could get hurt you know"
Tommy's eyes widened with fear, "Who- who are you?" Oh god, maybe he was right, he was going to get abducted by his magic uncle.
The voice took a moment to respond, "Who do you think I am? I have a feeling you know"
Tommy stopped, collecting himself, he was brave, he was a big man. He took a deep breath, "You're my crazy uncle, who's definitely this big creepy moth fella, and you've come here to eat me cause you're magic and evil and stuff, and you're name is probably Ozznar or something- wait! Clementine is a much better name for a moth, so that's your name. Right?"
The voice stammered losing it's ominous composure. "No- I mean- of course not! I-" It's confused mutters became populated with laughter "That was.. not the answer I expected- but then again, you were always full of surprises weren't you?"
A dark shadow passed swiftly above him, and the rain stopped abruptly, or at least it seemed too. He craned his neck up to see what was going on and all of a sudden was face-to-face with a strangely familiar set of blue eyes. Except this time they were set upon the face of a man. A man with golden stands of hair fallen loosely about his face, and a soft, curious expression.
But what froze him to his core were a large majestic set of inky black wings protruding from the mans back. They were extended above the two, shielding them the downpour.
He could barely react before warm, slight taloned hands were cupping his face gently, bringing his eyes up into contact with those icy blue ones, which were now creased in concern.
"My goodness, you've been through it haven't you mate? You look like you been tossed around in a barrel"
Starring up, still in shock, he realised why he couldn't shake the feeling he knew the man. "Mr. Crow?" he said in awe.
The man's worried look was replaced by a pleased friendly smile, "There we go, now that's more what I was expecting" he chuckled, "Though I do have a name, other than 'Mr.Crow'. I'm Phil"
Tommy almost broke into a grin and launched at the man out of pure excitement, but he stopped as it stuck him once more. He was a magic folk, just like Wilbur, just like the evil people.
His face dropped and he pulled back out the mans hold. "Uh uh- your lying, I bet you work for Wilbur, and he's trying to capture me"
Phil's expression faltered, "No mate.. I don't, but.." he paused "You see, Wilbur's my son, and so is Techno."
Tommy noticed the wings surrounding him becoming more enclosed. He panicked slightly, so Phil was there to seek vengeance for his son, oh no.
He stepped back directly on his sore foot, making him hiss in pain and wobble unstably.
The taloned hands reached forward and wrapped around him delicately. And suddenly he was hoisted up and pulled closer to Phil, who simply radiated heat.
"Geez, did you hurt your foot too? First your back now this? You're just not getting a break today. I'd say you need a good nap." He held Tommy against his chest as his wings returned to their natural position, giving way to the rain.
Tommy was about to squirm and kick with all his might in a last effort to escape his doom when he was unwilling distracted by a strange coo. Phil adjusted him comfortably, and continued to make funny little coos and whistles. It made his mind fuzzy, and he felt his drive to break free drain away. "That's it, all calm, all clam."
What was he supposed to be doing again? He didn't really remember, but he did know that he liked the warmth, he didn't like the rain and he intended to make it known. "Rain's cold" he slurred half consciously swatting as the raindrops.
"Yeah, I know mate, but it'll be nice and toasty when we get home"
That did sound nice, he imagined sitting by a fire crackling incased in a bunch on blankets. Phil said something that he couldn't really hear, but instinctively he tightened his grip. The world wooshed and the ground got very far away.
Everything sounded blurry. He could only focus on the rhythmic flaps of the black wings above him, letting them blend more into the darkened sky with each flap.
Safe, it was safe. He was safe.
