Work Text:

It no longer surprised him when the herd tended to shy away from him, after all they were semi-wild, and he was a predator in human skin.

His ride Bucephalas, Bue for short, still huffed for a moment or two until he recognised his him.  And then he was nudging at his vest to see what was Peter had in his pockets and more often than not his Stetson ended up on the ground as Bue knocked it off as a result.  Much to the amusement of any new hands around.

His family had not been impressed when he hadn't followed the plan they'd laid out for him, a law degree and his sister's left hand.  In fact, more than once they'd threatened him with breaking his pack bonds, which had just made him all the more stubborn.

Yes, he had his law degree, but he had quickly found out that he didn't enjoy the day to day of being a lawyer.  There were parts of it that he enjoyed, eviscerating opponents in court was no end of fun but the work to get to that point he'd found to be mind-numbingly boring for the most part.  Most of the time he just found it easier to hide the bodies, not something that conducive to working within the legal profession.  And really what had his pack expected?  He'd been in training to be Talia's left hand more or less since he could walk.

That's not to say he didn't do the odd job or three for his family, for free even.  He just took money from other packs to do the same for them.  Not all packs had or wanted a left hand.  And being one for hire made him good money.

Enough money that he'd been able to invest in a run down farm in the back end of no where which allowed him to ride horses, motorbikes and whoever he felt like bringing back with him.

And he wasn't above giving someone an earful if they called it a ranch.  He really didn't have enough land for it to be that, for all that a herd of horses had decided it was home way before he'd purchased the property.

It had been somewhat amusing to watch from a distance as the Baby Pack had sprung up, his sister hadn't had a clue what to do about it.  Technically, she should have put them down hard but given that his niece and nephew had become involved she'd stayed her hand.  Panicking like any parent when it seemed that the powers that be had been testing them left, right and centre.

He'd helped out on the quite where he could, making himself mightily unpopular with several people along the way.   Mostly because he was all for them working it out for themselves, solving their own problems and finding their own allies.

That said, no one was ever going to find Gerald and Kate Argent's bodies.  And a quite word in the Argent Matriarch's ear had put an end to Chris and Victoria's marriage before he'd had to have put an end to it himself.

For a while it seemed that Baby Pack had monster of the week syndrome but with a little push here and there they had got through it with minimal damage and no loss of life.  They were an interesting group as a result, one that could and did think outside the box.

And then there was Stiles Stilinski, who would have made a stunning wolf and an even greater left hand, but he would probably be classed as Baby Pack's emissary.  Though he really didn't have the temperament for that job, the word diplomatic wasn't part of Stiles' vocabulary.

Which made Stiles all the more interesting as far as he was concerned, being told to 'fuck off' by a fifteen-year-old should not have been amusing as it had been.  Stiles magic and his tie to the Nemeton had just been an added bonus, something that had made the kid even more worth his time.

So whether Stiles knew it or not Peter was mentoring him on what it took to be an enforcer for the Hale land.  Not for either pack in the territory but for the land itself.

Those were secrets that were passed down to every Hale left hand as the first enforcer for the Hale land had been the pack’s left hand.  Since then, Hale left hands guarded the knowledge and then passed it on when necessary.  The land tended to prefer the Hale left hand and its enforcer to be two separate people, probably so there wouldn't be a conflict of interest.

Two packs joined by blood and the land's own enforcer, those were the kind of things that made legends.

It was going to be an interesting ride.

Notes:

Thanks to Pigtails and Pens on Discord for Peter's horses name. Bucephalas was Alexander the Great's favourite horse.
