Lena woke up suddenly from her sleep.
It's the third time this week. Since they went to the phantom zone Lena keeps having nightmares, the one that wakes you up in the middle of the night.
She wiped her eyes full of tears and checked her environnement. She was still in her bedroom and according to her sleep sheet, she probably woke up from a rude one.
Nightmare... again.
She looked at her clock on her bedside table : 3:47.
She stepped outside of her bed, unable to walk normally because of the adrenaline still in her system. She walked through her kitchen and took a glass of water. The brunette tried to catch her breath and calm down just like Kelly told her the night after the phantom zone event.
Do you want us to keep you company? Her friend had told her.
But the Luthor was too stubborn, so she had to fight this alone. Plus Alex was already taking care of Kara, she didn't want to bring her trauma in addition. For now on the main thing to do is welcoming Kara back into their life. She had been through so much in the phantom zone for weeks, Lena can't imagine how hard it had been. Alone, scared, tormented by her worst fears. Kara was so strong, not giving up her hope despite the situation.
Lena could never do that...
Suddenly she heard a knock on her balcony, she jumped and almost dropped her glasses.
It was Kara, in her super suit, peering her with a worry frown on her face. Lena wiped her eyes again, and tried to keep her sobbing to herself. Ignoring her night garnement only made up of an oversized t-shirt and shorts, she advised her best friend to come in. It wasn't the first time that Kara saw her like this, it's definitely not the last.
" Sorry I... I thought that you were in danger or something. "
Lena frowned in response, why did Kara suppose that ? The super replied, scratching her neck nervously
" I kinda heard your heartbeat and I get worry."
Oh...So Kara kept watching her to keep her safe. That was something big to hear. Her silence was enough for Kara to explain herself.
" I thought that..ya know you were in danger after all Lex did. Your heartbeat was fast I was worry."
She smiled at the Super. " It's ok Kara , just a bad dream, nothing to worry about"
The blonde stepped into the kitchen area, close enough that Lena could see raindrops on the super suit. How many times did Kara stay outside and listen to her ?
" Do you wanna talk about it ?"
" I rather not..truly it was nothing.You have been through much more in the phantom zone I don't want you to worry about my bad sleep schedule"
Shocked, Kara took Lena's hand and replied more quietly.
" Oh Lena, we're not here to compare our pain, you know. I'm here if you want to talk or just..have me hanging on with you. It's been a while. "
" You probably had other things to do, and it's almost 4 in the morning Kara, you should really sleep."
Kara turned her head to the clock above the kitchen plan and replied with a smile " I can take a break to my night patrol.”
She released Lena's hand and took off her glasses. The super suit disappeared slowly and revealed a simple jogging with a sweater. Lena never really saw the process backwards. Her scientific mind was impressed to know that Kara can wear comfy clothing under this tight suit.
" Plus I'm already dressed for this occasion! Shall we ? "
She dragged Lena into her sofa and kept a smile on her face.
" Ok I lie. It was a nightmare, a bad one" said Lena. " We didn't have the time to catch up, but when we rescuited you all of our friends faced their worst nightmare. "
" Alex mentioned that yeah..." Kara lowered her head, ashamed probably because she was the main reason for these nightmares.
" Mine was...well it was kind of terrifying."
The blonde remained quiet, knowing that Lena had to take her time to explain.
" I saw all our friends...die from drowning, they were all over the floor. I helpt Nia get safe but the Kelpie drowned her too. "
Despite Kara's silence, she rose a questionable brown.
"Kelpie, it's a myth. A water shapeshifter capable of drawing people. I was able to run but none of our friends made it. And I was so..so afraid even if I know it was a scary vision.”
" Knowing that was a scary vision proves that you're way above your fear. "
" No..you don't get it Kara " a single tear streamed down her cheek " It reminded me of my mom I..." she took her hands and tried to stay calm but can help the tears in her eyes " I never told you how my mum died..."
Kara put her hand on her shoulder, encouraging her to continue.
"We went to this lake, it was cloudy and she decided to swim while I stayed on the front shore and saw her drowned. I didn't scream, I didn't cry..I was just staying there watching my mother died."
Lena sobbed, wiped her eyes and continued " What kind of child doesn't scream when their mother die in front of their eyes ? "
Suddenly it was too much for her, too much to handle, too much to think. She just wanted all this pain and trauma gone. Without thinking, she grabbed Kara's sweater and hid her head in the Super neck. Her best friend hugged her and patted her back kindly.
" Lena you were 4."
" I should have saved her Kara. I cried every night after her death even though I know it was my fault."
" It wasn't Lena. You're not responsible for your mother's death, it was an accident."
Deep down her logical brain agreed. But the pain was too much to handle right now. Being in Kara's arms reminded her of something she never thought she needed again after all those years.
She moved away from Kara's hug " I used to hug my teddy every night and cried to sleep until Lillian took it away" She sobbed again "Anyway, tonight my nightmare was different...it wasn’t my mother but what happened on the ship. See all our friends died because of me again. I saw them die and I wasn't brave enough to save them."
She looked at her hands, her fingers intertwined together. She always does that when she's uncomfortable. And crying in her best friend's arms was uncomfortable and pathetic even if she knew that Kara didn’t pay attention to that.
" Oh Lena '' She took her hands and caressed them "We're all safe now..so do you. I will make sure we are."
The brunette raised her head and looked at the blonde eyes "What happens if you leave us again ? "
There was sadness in those blue eyes, she knew that this could happen again.
" I’m not going anywhere this time. I promise " She smiled, the kind of smile reserved for Lena only.
She knew Kara wouldn't leave, she grabbed her for a hug anyway. So tight that without her power Kara would feel that.
" I'm not gonna let you go either."
Lena could feel Kara wiggle. The nightmares may remain but now she knew that Kara will always be there to protect her and love her.
The day after this event and a good night sleep, Lena received a surprise guest on her balcony.
A teddy bear stood there. It wasn’t any kind of teddy bear, this one had a Supergirl cape and a handwritten note. It was Kara. Lena smiled.
Of course it was her, who would let this on her balcony ?
She read the note :
" For when I'm gone <3 ”
