Work Text:
He didn't think that he could ever take something from Mabel. That he could, whether unintentional or on purpose, deprive her of something that gave her lots of joy.
He was proven wrong when he put her beloved pig outside, causing it to be taken away by that pterodactyl.
He didn't think that he could ever make Mabel mad at him. That she could ever legitimately hate his guts and turn her back on him.
He was proven wrong when she learned the truth about what he did, causing her to give him the silent treatment.
He didn't think that he could ever make Mabel cry. That he could break her heart in such a way, that it would forever be scarred.
He was proven wrong when they finally reached that dinosaur's nest and found the remains of her beloved pet, causing her to break down and cry miserably the whole way home.
He didn't think that he could ever miss Mabel. That he would be in a situation where he couldn't enjoy her jokes, her games, just her bubbly personality in general.
He was proven wrong when she kept her silent treatment up for days, causing her to never once acknowledge his presence and if she did, then only with resentment.
He didn't think that he could ever lose Mabel. That she could ever leave him behind, alone and unwanted.
He was proven wrong when she had called up her parents behind his back and begged them to take her back home, causing her parents to unexpectedly arrive one morning and take their children back, much to his shock.
He didn't think that he could ever be permanently separated from Mabel. That she would avoid all of his attempts to contact her.
He was proven wrong when she still didn't pick up his calls two weeks later, causing him to finally give it up.
He didn't think that he could ever cry and hate himself for something just as much as he did when he lost his brother.
He was proven wrong.
