“Schlatt. Where are you,” Connor asked. His voice was trying to stay calm, Schlatt realized. He was stressed. Because of him.
“Don’t worry about that, Connor.”
“Schlatt. Please.”
“Don’t worry, Connor. I’ll make this call short, I promise. I just… I’ve come to a realization.”
“Schlatt please…” Connor sounded like he was crying.
“Let me talk please. I’ve realized something, Connor. I could lean forward just a little bit, Connor, and it would all be over,” Schlatt said into the phone, looking down at the water below. “Just a little bit. And it’s so tempting, Connor. I could just let go, loosen my grip a tiny bit, and it’d be over. But… I’ve realized something. I don’t… I don’t think I wanna die. I mean, I don’t wanna live, but I’m too curious to die. What if it all gets better tomorrow? I’ll never know. I wouldn’t ever know.” He sighed, and readjusted his grip on the railing.
“And you know what? Maybe I’m sick of life. Maybe I’m a pain for telling you this. I mean, you don’t wanna hear this, Connor. I know that, I just… no one else listens. You’re such a good friend, Connor. You don’t deserve this. But I think I’ll be done with trying. To die, I mean. Cause what if, what if tomorrow, everything gets better. I wanna be there when it does. And I’ve decided that it will. Maybe not tomorrow. And maybe not of its own accord. But I'll make it happen.”
“But Schlatt, what if tomorrow isnt the day?” Connor asked.
“That’s the thing, Connor. Tomorrow doesn’t exist. Tomorrow is an infinite day that never comes, no matter how close we get to it. So yeah. Maybe it won't come tomorrow, in the literal sense. But tomorrow can be infinite, so I guess, if I’m really that curious, I can be infinite, too.”
“So… so what, you’re…”
“I’m not gonna die today, Connor. I’m climbing back over the rails.”
“Thank god.”
“... can I come over?”
“Please.”
“I’m sorry for stressing you out. I’m on my way over.”
“Thank you. Thank you.” He sounded relieved. Part of Schlatt agreed with the sentiment. He looked up at the sky. It was a dreary day, cloudy. He hoped the weather would be nicer tomorrow. Guess he’d wait and see.
