Summary:

"I've got to go now Wonjae but before I do, I've got one more surprise."

Yoongi's four year old son Wonjae has an obsession with garbage trucks and one garbage man in particular - Jungkook. After the friendly, tattooed man gives Wonjae a gift for being his number one fan, Yoongi and his son spend the weekend making the perfect handmade present to give in return.

Will Yoongi be able to overcome his shyness and give a piece of his heart to the young man too?

Notes:

Prompt:

In which character A’s kid has an obsession with the garbage man and the truck he drives. (Set somewhere that uses garbage trucks to empty bins). Character A is a single dad and Jungkook is the garbage man.

Jungkook brings a gift for the kid one week, so character A also needs to find/make a gift for his kid to give to Jungkook. Just a very warm and light hearted story.

Perhaps character A and Jungkook hit it off too~

Work Text:

Yoongi felt a weight thump on his chest, a tiny finger wiggling up his nostril followed by a mischievous giggle. He cracked an eye open and could see it was still dark outside through the crack in the curtain, so he sighed and shut his eye again. Seconds later his eyes were pulled open by the same small fingers that were playing with his button nose.

"Daddy wake up, he's gonna be here soon."

Yoongi laughed to himself, the man in question wouldn't be here for at least another two hours. He grabbed the offender and drew him into a big hug, littering his chubby face with kisses and nuzzled into his inky black hair.

"It's time for the kissy monster." Yoongi said in a sing song tone, continuing to kiss the boy who was now squirming against his hold.

"Daaadd stop! We're gonna miss Jungkook, get out of bed!"

Wonjae was Yoongi's precious four year old autistic son. He had separated from his wife a year ago, the two having fallen out of love and now they shared custody of the beautiful, unique preschooler. This was Yoongi's week which meant he worked from home to spend as much time with the cute boy as possible. Yoongi turned to check the time on the alarm clock, he groaned when he saw the flashing numbers showed 6:30am. He loved his son with all his heart, but he also loved sleep.

"Wonjae shhh lie down, close your eyes and go back to sleep."

The boy wiggled out of his father's grip and started jumping on the bed, the sweetest laugh echoing throughout the otherwise quiet room.

"Nope, lazy daddy get up! Lazy daddy, lazy daddy." Wonjae dropped down on his father, elbowing him right in the gut, Yoongi's body jolted up immediately to hold his aching abdomen.

"Alright, come on then..."

Wonjae leapt out of bed full of energy already so early in the morning, Yoongi on the other hand threw the blankets over his head, rolling himself like a burrito, before crawling slowly out of his warm cosy cocoon.

Wonjae was already in the living room by the time Yoongi had managed to walk in, wide awake now thanks to the help of a splash of cold water from the bathroom sink directly to his face. The toddler was sitting on the floor surrounded by his favourite toys - garbage trucks. His son had discovered an obsession for the unlikely vehicle over the last 5 months, watching with awe every Tuesday morning as the large machine lifted the bins high above itself to empty into the back. His son had said the truck sounded like a dinosaur at first, a little nervous to see one up close. But once he saw the bin being lifted and emptied his thoughts had changed from cautious interest to full on astonishment.

But it wasn't just the truck that interested the young boy, it was also the driver - a doe eyed brunette in his early 20s with a lively and friendly personality.  He had noticed Yoongi and his son standing on the footpath bundled up in pyjamas and matching dressing gowns early on a Tuesday morning for 3 fortnight's in a row before he pulled over and introduced himself. Wonjae was ecstatic, high-fiving with his idol not at all concerned that the man had been lifting heavy and smelly rubbish bins all morning. For the rest of his week with Yoongi it was all the boy would talk about. So when his week rolled by again Yoongi surprised his son with his very first garbage truck toy. Little did Yoongi know that would be the start of his son's collection - which now consists of 8 garbage trucks and various dolls that Yoongi's mother had sewed custom high-ves jackets for, to look more like sanitation workers.

Yoongi smiled as he crouched down, planting a kiss on his son's head, nose rubbing through his hair, inhaling the sweet smell of bubblegum scented shampoo. Wonjae didn't pay his father any attention though, too busy lining the trucks up in precision. Yoongi stood and made his way into the kitchen, having a child with autism was challenging but rewarding in so many ways. One of the biggest challenges was food. Wonjae had an extremely limited diet, relying on a dietitian supplied supplement to get him through the day. Yoongi sighed, hands flat against the bench top, head bowed. He loved cooking, it was a passion of his. He and his older brother loved to spend their days in the kitchen with their mother baking and cooking. When his ex wife announced she was pregnant he couldn't hide his excitement to one day recreate his childhood memories with his own son. Unfortunately a son with a food aversion meant a lot of screaming and crying, so Yoongi never pushed the matter and the joy of cooking for Wonjae turned into a chore.

He opened the pantry and pulled out the box of cornflakes, a tried and loved meal - one that Wonjae would happily eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner. He poured the crunchy flavourless cereal into a bowl before adding the right amount of milk. Not too much as Wonjae would gag if the cereal became too soggy, but also not too dry that it would hurt his throat when he gulped it down. Pleased he had the perfect ratio of milk-to-cereal he walked back through the living room and placed the bowl on Wonjae's little table in the corner, far away from the dining room so food smells wouldn't disrupt him.

"Wonjae toys down and eat your breakfast please."

The young boy's head whipped around, eyes glaring at his father.

"No."

Yoongi sighed "Wonjae don't do this, you need to eat come on."

"No."

The boy had turned his back away from his father and was busy smashing the trucks into one another, making exploding noises every time they touched. Yoongi rolled his eyes, he walked up behind his son and lifted him with ease, carrying the now squirming boy over to his table popping him down gently on the chair.

"Don't you dare think of leaving this table until this food is finished alright?"

Yoongi tried to be stern, he just wanted the best for his son but he could see in the way Wonjae's eyes scrunched up and his little body tense that a meltdown was only minutes away.

"Hey, you know Jungkook eats breakfast everyday right? How do you think he got so strong to lift all those bins? He told me last week cornflakes are his favourite."

The boy looked up at his father suspiciously, but Yoongi matched his wary stare with a serious case of puppy dog eyes. He smiled affectionately and nodded his head towards the bowl encouraging the boy to pick up his spoon and eat. A little trickery was all it took to get the boy to eat his breakfast and Yoongi wondered to himself if he could use the 'Jungkook' card again at dinner.

Once father and son both had full bellies and were dressed warmly for the cool Autumn weather they walked around to the side of the house to wheel the rubbish and recycling bins to the curb. Wonjae looked adorable in his gumboots, bright yellow puffer jacket and matching trapper hat. He weaved his way in between Yoongi and the recycling bin, using all his strength to help his father push it up the driveway into it's designated spot grunting in the most adorable way the entire time. He stood there resting one little hand on the side while Yoongi quickly ran back to grab the rubbish bin, making sure to place it further along the curb - away from the scent sensitive boy.

"Daddy when will Jungkook come?"

Yoongi pulled back the sleeve on his well worn Fila jacket and checked the time on the watch his ex wife had brought him as a gift for his first fathers day.

"He'll be here soon monkey, do you want to go sit down with me?"

Wonjae shook his head and started to spin on the spot, it was something the boy would do every time he was excited. Yoongi looked at his son fondly, his love of garbage trucks was unexpected but incredibly fun to witness. And if he was honest with himself he also was a bit excited, Jungkook was beautiful. He was incredibly toned, with tattoos covering the length of one arm and hand, long dark hair he would pull back into a half ponytail and the most precious smile - Yoongi had thought he resembled a Bunny rabbit, his two front teeth a little bigger than the rest. Yoongi had always been open with his sexuality, preferring to focus on the person inside rather than what was between their legs. But following his separation his sole focus was just on his son and himself, dating could wait. But he had started to miss having another adult around, someone to joke with, to bore with his talk of the latest in musical equipment and of course, to be intimate with. But he didn't want to possibly put off Jungkook by dropping hints, Wonjae would be devastated if his best friend was to feel uncomfortable and change to a different route. A loud squeal pulled Yoongi out of his thoughts, he looked towards his son and saw him jumping up and down flapping his arms in the air, smile as wide as a Cheshire cat.

"Jungkook, Jungkook!!!"

Yoongi jogged over to his son and took his tiny hand in his own as he pulled his son away from the road to stand at a safer distance. The boy whined and tried to free himself from his fathers grip.

"Remember what I said last time? If you stand too close the truck will take you instead of the bin, you'll get crushed up into a neat little box. How am I supposed to cuddle with a box at night huh?"

"You are silly dad." Wonjae giggled, his free arm still flapping about.

They could see the truck in the distance stopping every few metres, arm deployed to grab hold on the bin emptying the trash into the hopper. The closer the truck got, the faster Wonjae's arm flapped.
Finally the truck arrived in front of them. Yoongi could see Jungkook's wide smile from inside the chassis, he was waving his hand excitedly at the father and son duo. The truck made a loud whirring noise as the engine was turned off. Jungkook pushed the door open and effortlessly jumped out onto the sidewalk. Yoongi tried his hardest not to smile like an idiot, Jungkook looked amazing today. He was wearing a pair of jeans that strained against his large thigh muscles, a short sleeve T-shirt that showed off his spectacular artwork, orange and yellow high-ves vest and matching gloves and his curly hair was tied back as usual. He wanted so badly to oogle the younger man - especially those delicious thighs, but he forced the thoughts out of his head.

"Good morning Min family." Jungkook smiled brightly as he walked towards the pyjama clad pair, removing his work gloves and shoving them into his pockets.

"Jungkook!" Wonjae ran towards him and jumped into his arms. Jungkook looked a little taken aback at first, but smiled fondly at the boy.

"Hey come on Wonjae personal space, you need to ask someone before you do that."

Jungkook dismissed Yoongi with a wave of his hand "It's okay Yoongi don't worry about it. Anyway I have a special treat for my good friend here, would you like to see it?"

"Yes please." Wonjae nodded fast, Yoongi came up behind him and placed his hands on either side of his son's head, keeping it still "You'll get a headache if you nod your head that fast." he chastised. Suddenly he realised just how close he was to Jungkook and stood back, coughing awkwardly into his cold hand pretending to warm it up. He'd just lectured his son on personal space and had just waltzed on into someone else's himself. His eyes avoided the brunette, choosing to stare at the letterbox to his left.

Jungkook carried Wonjae over to his truck and lifted the young boy into the drivers seat where he immediately reached out to touch every button and lever he could. Yoongi joined them both, leaving a decent amount of space between himself and Jungkook.

"Should he be touching all of that?" Concern was laced in Yoongi's voice.

"It's okay, I took the key out." Jungkook explained the parts of the truck for Wonjae answering any questions the curious boy had and threw his head back in laughter when the boy did his best Jungkook impression. Yoongi stood quietly watching the interaction, warming on the inside at how well the tattooed man was with his son.

"I've got to go now Wonjae but before I do I've got one more surprise." Jungkook passed the boy down into his fathers arms and pulled himself back into the chassis leaning over into the passenger seat to grab a blue and grey gift bag. He handed Wonjae the bag with a wide smile on his face.

The small boy peaked inside the bag and squealed with delight, Yoongi placed him on the ground and Wonjae dropped down onto his butt, tipping the bag upside down spilling the contents on the concrete underneath him. A brand new garbage truck toy, an official city branded hi-ves vest and a bag of lollies were laying on the ground. Wonjae picked up the truck and waved it in the air "Look dad, a new truck!"

"That's awesome, what do you say to Jungkook?"

"Thank you Jungkook, I love you."

The two men looked at the young boy fondly before sharing the same look with each other. Jungkook crouched down and watched with adoration as Wonjae made his garbage truck fly in the air complete with sound effects.

"Yoongi, he's so cute. He's an amazing little dude."

"Thanks Jungkook, you really didn't need to do this you know." Yoongi bit along the side of his thumb nail, a nervous habit of his.

"It's really no big deal," he laughed "Wonjae is the highlight of my Tuesday."

Jungkook leaned in and gave the boy a hug before waving goodbye to Yoongi and his carbon copy son. Once inside Yoongi started to get anxious, he couldn't just accept a gift without returning the favor. And then add on the fact that this mornings events made him even fonder of the younger man, his thoughts were swirling, giving him a mild headache.

______

Over the new few days Yoongi browsed the Internet for ideas on the perfect gift for Jungkook. He considered buying him some quality Whiskey, but was unsure if the man enjoyed alcohol, he thought about buying a gift card but decided that was too impersonal, Yoongi nearly purchased a gorgeous gold watch he spotted in the window of a jewelry store he passed by after completing his food shopping for the week, but was positive that would would scare the younger man off.

Yoongi brought his knees together, hand comfortably slotted in between as he lay on his side in bed. The bed felt entirely too empty and cold, so he curled in on himself even more, missing the warm embrace of another at moments like this. He couldn't help but wonder if Jungkook was the type to cuddle, and if he did was he the big or little spoon? Yoongi loved being the one to get cuddled, nuzzling into his lover, enjoying their comforting arms wrapped around his slim body. He scrolled through page after page of blogs and their gift recommendations but nothing felt right for Jungkook. Just as he was about to give up, turn off his phone and attempt to get some much needed sleep he clicked on a blog post about homemade gifts and their unique charm. Yoongi pursued the blog entry, a million ideas flooding his over tired head. Inspiration had struck! He knew what he was going to give to the tattooed man and he would need a special helper on this very important project.

_____

Yoongi laid newspaper over the table, gathering up all the bits and pieces he needed for his project and arranging them carefully around the small circular dining table before walking back into the living room to get the most important piece of the puzzle.

Wonjae's eyes were glued to the television as brightly coloured numbers sung and danced to a catchy little tune. Yoongi hummed along, he had heard the song at least 30 times this week and while he would deny it to anyone who asked, he actually thought the song was kinda cute and fun.

"Okay buddy, dad needs your help on a special project," He crouched in front of the boy who impatiently rocked side to side attempting to see past his father who was blocking his view of the television, "It's for Jungkook so I really need your awesome skills."

The boy stilled "Jungkook?"

"Yeah, want to help?"

The boy jumped into his fathers arms, knocking them both backwards, a loud thump heard when Yoongi's back hit the carpeted floor. He closed his arms around his son and gave him a big wet smooshy kiss before carrying Wonjae over to the table. He popped a plastic apron over his son's head and tied the string behind his back, things were bound to get messy today.

"What are we making dad?" Wonjae asked as he reached across the table for the empty juice container, knocking over a tube full of glitter in the process.

"We are gonna make our very own garbage truck! Do you think he'll like it?"

Wonjae bounced in his chair "Yup!"

Yoongi laughed warmly, "Well okay, let's get started then."

First up Yoongi had to cut the top off the container, making a little spot for the toilet roll Jungkook to sit, then create a cut at the bottom to look like the hopper, next was to paint the juice container. Yoongi tried hard to convince his son to pick the dark green ("it's the perfect colour") but a beautiful bright purple was chosen by the boy instead. A much needed snack break allowed the paint to dry, after which Yoongi hot glued bottle caps to each side of the container for the wheels. After a very liberal sprinkle of glitter the pair moved on to creating the toilet roll Jungkook. Wonjae painted the thin cardboard in a range of bright colours, and with his fathers help glued a bunch of cotton balls on the top for hair. Yoongi helped place a giant smiley face sticker on the front and their masterpiece was done.

As Yoongi emptied the dishwasher he let Wonjae continue to play at the table, the young boy singing a song he had made up about his favourite garbage man. Yoongi's cheeks hurt from how big he was smiling, but he couldn't help himself his son was his absolute world.

"Hey, whatcha doing monkey?" Yoongi asked as he leaned over the boys shoulder to check on his hard work.

"It's you and me," Small fingers pointed at each smudged blob of paint on the paper, "And this is Jungkook." He pointed to the large blob of black paint which stood beside the smaller brown blob that represented his father.

"Would you like me to give this to Jungkook too?" Yoongi asked, eyes glued to the artwork his son had created.

"Mmm." He replied nodding, his bangs falling over his eyes. Wonjae pushed the hair out of his face and smudged paint all over his face while doing so. Yoongi chuckled and placed a kiss to his son's cheek, "Look at how grubby you are! I think it's time for a bath."

Yoongi took one last glance at the painting, smiling at the scene of the three of them together. He really needed to work up the nerve to ask the man out, but he was riddled with nerves and insecurity. His smile dropped and he sighed, he had 2 days left to work up some much needed courage.
________

Yoongi could feel the bed dip next to him, cold feet pressed against his back. He cracked his tired eyes open and checked the time on the alarm clock - 6:48 am. Yoongi groaned, stretching his arms high above him, cracking his neck side to side. He looked back in the direction of the cold feet and his heart warmed at seeing Wonjae splayed out amongst the blankets, hair ruffled and spiky from rolling around all night long. This was a big morning for Yoongi, today he and Wonjae would be giving Jungkook his thank you gift. He had chosen his clothes the night before, hanging them on the doorframe of the bathroom. Yoongi took more time than usual to shower this morning wanting to look his very best, it took him an extra fifteen minutes to get his hair styled exactly how he wanted. But then he decided he looked too put together and chucked a beanie on.

Yoongi tried his best to not show his nerves, mindlessly playing games on his phone to distract himself while Wonjae ate his breakfast. Everything seemed fine until he heard the sound of the garbage truck turn into their street.

The excited boy ran to the front door and attempted on tip toes, to unlock the door and race out to the street. Yoongi tutted at the boy, "You need to calm down or we're not going out today." The boy stood patiently while Yoongi nervously opened the door but sprinted out the minute it was open, "Hey! Wait for me." He yelled out to his son who was jiggling his head side to side and flapping his arms in the front garden.

Father and son walked hand in hand to the footpath and stood in their usual spot waiting for Jungkook to arrive. Yoongi looked down at the gift nestled under his armpit and felt a twinge of nerves, it was too late to back out now.

Jungkook's smile from inside the truck made Yoongi's belly do back flips, today his long hair was down and he looked even more beautiful than usual. The tattooed man jumped out of the chassis and gave Wonjae a high five.

"Sorry I can't stay and talk too long today I'm kinda running late." He said while looking down at his watch.

"Jungkook! Dad and I made you a present!" Wonjae's little hands reached out to grab the brightly coloured gift from his father. Yoongi smiled and handed the gift to his son, who threw it towards Jungkook.

"Good catch." Chuckled Yoongi when tattooed hands caught the gift easily.

Jungkook observed the homemade craft and painting, turning the rubbish truck around in his hands, smile widening by the second.
"You made this for me?" Jungkook asked the small boy who looked very proud of himself.

"Uh huh, with my dad."

"Just a little thank you for the gift last week, I know it's not much bu- "

Yoongi was interrupted, "Not much? My best mate made this for me? That's the best gift I could have ever received. Thank you." He took Wonjae's small hand and shook it before giving him a salute, which made the little boy cackle.

"Min family I need to go or I'm gonna be even more behind. But thank you so much." He smiled fondly.

"No problem," This was it - the moment Yoongi was dreading, he took a deep breath then spoke, "Um by the way, check inside the truck . . not now! But later, there is something extra in there." His eyes were focused on the patch of grass behind where Jungkook stood.

They watched as Jungkook made his way back into the truck and kicked the machine into gear, arm raising in the air to pick up the rubbish bin, trash falling into the hopper like snow fall on a winters day. Yoongi nearly missed it, but he watched as Jungkook picked up the rubbish truck craft. Inside Yoongi had written a little note confessing his feelings and included his number. He tensed when he realised what the younger man was reading, suddenly wishing the ground would open up and swallow him whole. He studied the man, scared to see anger flash on such a pretty face, but was ecstatic when he saw that beautiful grin spread across Jungkook's face.

Jungkook rolled down the window and shouted, "Hey Yoongi, I'll text you on my break!" He winked at the man and waved at Wonjae before driving off to continue his route.

Yoongi gave his son a kiss on the top of his head, he was excited, nervous and relieved that Jungkook had taken his note well. And it was all thanks to his beautiful, unique, one of a kind son. Without his interest in garbage trucks he would have never met the easy going, attractive man. Whatever happened between Yoongi and Jungkook was yet to be seen, but Yoongi was proud of himself for finally stepping out of his comfort zone.
