Work Text:
Shoyo stood in his and Atsumu’s shared kitchen, his phone in hand. He scrolled through his social media absentmindedly as he sipped his coffee.
“So, what should we do today?” Shoyo asked. “It’s rare to have more than one day off in a row.”
Atsumu kissed him on the cheek from behind, his arms wrapped around him gently. “We could go an’ bother Samu,” he suggested. “We can get some onigiri to go an’ spend the rest o’ the day at home.” He nuzzled his face into his neck. “After that, we can do as we please.”
Shoyo chuckled. “I’m sure I know what you want to do, but I’d rather we spend the day doing some more wholesome activities.”
Atsumu kissed up the side of his neck. “Whatever ya say, Shoyo. I get to choose what we do next time, though.”
“Alright,” he said. “I promise you get to choose on our next day off.”
Atsumu inhaled deeply and sighed. “I love ya, Shoyo.”
Shoyo reached up and ran a hand through Atsumu’s hair. “I love you too, Tsumu.”
He placed his chin on Shoyo’s head. “Then what are ya thinkin’ we should do?”
“I like what you already suggested, I just think we should have a movie marathon when we get home. I’d really like to just cozy up on the couch with you.”
“Yer so cute, Shoyo.” He said with a hum. “Then a movie marathon it’ll be.” He kissed him behind the ear.
The two took a shower before heading out. Atsumu had his arm wrapped around Shoyo’s waist on the way there.
“Did I ever tell ya about the last time I went t’bug Samu?” he asked with an airy voice.
Shoyo shook his head. “I don’t believe so, no. Why? Did you make a mess?”
Atsumu scoffed. “Nah, I’m more respectful than that—hey, don’t laugh!” He groaned. “No, the last time I went t’Samu’s shop, he made fun of me! He called me childish an’ started tellin’ embarrassin’ stories from when we were kids to the regulars.” He rubbed his face. “It was mortifyin’.”
“Then I guess you’ll just have to get some payback, huh?”
Atsumu’s eyes lit up. “Have I ever told ya how much I love ya?”
“Only everyday,” Shoyo giggled. “But also, wouldn't that only prove his point?” He smirked.
“Yer the one that suggested it!”
Shoyo pecked him on the nose. “Then I guess that just makes both of us childish.”
Atsumu smiled dumbly, melting on the spot. “Yer gonna be the death of me.” He sighed dreamily. “So what’s the plan?”
The two plotted until they made it to the doorstep of the restaurant.
They entered the threshold, wearing matching grins. Osamu spotted them and waved.
“Hey, Shoyo,” he said. “What brings ya and Tsumu here?” He squinted at the two, his gaze flitting between them. “Ya look like ya want trouble.”
Shoyo chuckled. “Of course not. We’re just here to get some lunch to go. We’re havin’ a movie marathon tonight.” He smiled brightly.
Atsumu wrapped his arm around his waist tighter, dropping his head onto his shoulder with a matching smile.
Osamu leaned over the counter, chin in his palm. “Aww, isn’t that cute.” He frowned. “Now quit flauntin’ yer lovey dovey selves everywhere. Yer makin’ me itch.” He turned around and headed to the kitchen. “I'll just make yer regular,” he called out.
“Wow, that was way easier than I thought it would be,” Shoyo whispered.
Atsumu giggled. “Yeah, he’s been real touchy about romance ever since he got turned down by that friend of Bokkun’s.”
“Akaashi-san?” Shoyo asked in a startled whisper.
Atsumu nodded.
“I had no idea he liked him.”
“Caught me off guard too. Apparently after seein’ ‘im enough times whenever he’d set up shop at our games, he got a crush on the guy.”
Shoyo cringed. “I feel kinda bad now.”
Atsumu shrugged. “Don’t be. He did this kinda thing to me constantly when we were younger, and we’re only gonna bug ‘im this once.”
Shoyo pursed his lips, but nodded. “Okay, only this once.”
Osamu came back out, a bag in hand. “Alright, here’s yer order. I’ll get ya rung up.”
Atsumu lit up. “Thank ya, Samu! Yer onigiri is always so good! It’ll be the perfect thing to eat, won’t it, Sho?” He nuzzled his nose into Shoyo’s hair with a giggle.
Shoyo blushed and pushed at his chest. “Yes, but we have to pay first, you dork.”
Atsumu continued to giggle. “Okay, dearest.” He let go of him and pulled out his wallet, glancing up at a sour-faced Osamu. “Something wrong Samu?”
“Yer the worst.”
Atsumu dropped his voice. “If it really gets on yer nerves that much, why don’t ya call up Suna?”
Osamu scowled. “What does he have to do with anythin’?”
Atsumu’s expression softened. “I know you’re upset about Keiji, but you can’t tell me that it’s made ya go blind, has it?”
Osamu’s face twisted in confusion.
“He’s in love with you, dumbass,” he spoke clearly. He swiped his card, finishing the transaction. He grabbed the bag and turned to leave, looking back over his shoulder. “Call him while ya still have the chance, alright? Don’t waste the time ya got. Ya already waited this long.”
Osamu straightened up, his eyes clear. He pursed his lips and nodded.
Atsumu nodded back and left with a wave, Shoyo trailing after him.
Shoyo eyed him suspiciously, a grin slowly appearing on his face. He chuckled. “You know, if you wanted to help him, you could have just told me.”
“Aw, but ya know I love schemin’ with ya,” he said. He sighed. “He gives me hell all the time, but he’s still my brother. Really wish he’d get his head out of his ass once in a while.”
Shoyo took Atsumu’s hand. “Scheming is fun, but seeing this side of you is way better in my opinion. That was really cool of you, even if you were pretty mean at first.”
Atsumu gripped back tightly. “It’s the easiest way to get through his thick skull. Now walk faster. I wanna get home so I can spoil ya.”
Shoyo grinned evilly. “What, you can’t spoil me anywhere else?” He looked up at him and batted his eyelashes.
Atsumu stopped in his tracks and glanced around. There weren’t many people around, but a couple of them were already looking at the two of them. Whether because they recognise the two or some other reason is unknown to them. Atsumu quickly dodged into a nearby alley and pinned Shoyo against the wall.
Shoyo let out a phony gasp. “Atsumu, what ever are you doing? We’re in public.” He dropped his voice. “What if someone sees us?”
Atsumu pressed closer. “I don’t mind an audience.”
Shoyo blushed, coming to his senses. “Okay, I was kidding. We can go home.” He chuckled nervously.
Atsumu leaned down, their noses brushing together. “What if I don’t wanna go home yet?” He grabbed Shoyo’s hands and held them against the wall.
Shoyo inhaled sharply, his blush deepening. He squirmed. “Atsumu, I mean it.”
“Can I kiss you first?” he asked softly. “Then we can go.”
Shoyo chewed his lip. “Okay. One kiss. Then we can go home.”
Atsumu smiled. He slid his hands up, intertwining their fingers and leaned down to capture Shoyo’s lips in a tender kiss.
Shoyo melted against him as he gripped his hands tightly.
The sound of a flash was heard and the scampering of fleeing feet.
Shoyo’s eyes shot open and he turned, only just barely catching what looked like a girl in a school uniform. He groaned. “Damn it, this is what I meant, Atsumu. What if she posts that? We’re gonna be in huge trouble. Oh my god, what if we get fired? Kenma will totally drop me and I won’t have any sponsors anymore. What are we gonna do?” His panic increased as he continued rambling.
Atsumu stroked his cheek, shushing him. “Hey, hey, it’s fine. Don’t worry about it. It was just a kiss. Everyone already knows that we’re dating, so it’s not a problem.”
Shoyo frowned. “We were kissing in an alley. It looks scandalous. It’s about the framing, not the actual actions itself. I’m worried about how the story might get twisted.” He pulled away from Atsumu’s grip. “Let’s—let’s just go home.”
Atsumu reached for him, hesitating and choosing to follow after him, sulking. He stared firmly at the ground only occasionally glancing up to see if Shoyo had calmed down any. To his dismay, he only seemed more frustrated every time he checked. His own frown deepened, guilt pulling at his gut.
They arrived back home with a bitter taste in their mouths. Atsumu was the first to speak.
“I’m sorry, Shoyo,” he said. “I should’ve just listened to ya the first time. All I could think about was how much I wanted t’kiss ya and I didn’t think about the possible consequences.”
Shoyo sighed. “I’m not mad at you, Atsumu. I am frustrated, but I’m mostly just worried.” He ran his hands through his hair. “Let’s just continue on with our day like we planned, okay?” He took his hands into his own. “We can deal with any consequences tomorrow. Right now, it’s just us, and I want to enjoy that in peace.” He placed a hand delicately onto Atsumu’s cheek.
Atsumu smiled and leaned into the touch. “That’s what I want too. Yer a saint.”
Shoyo chuckled. “Only with you. Now, let’s eat that onigiri.” He leaned up and kissed him softly.
Atsumu pulled him in closer, deepening the kiss. He pulled away. “Can I eat ya first?”
Shoyo lightly smacked him on the cheek. “I’m not on the menu,” he joked.
After they ate, the two laid curled up together on the couch. Atsumu laid his head on Shoyo’s chest, listening to his steady heartbeat. Shoyo ran his hands through his hair as they watched random movies they grabbed.
“Yer the best, Shoyo,” Atsumu said, words slurred with sleep. “Yer an angel.”
Shoyo smiled and hugged him close. “Would that make you a demon since you have such devilish good looks?”
Atsumu’s eyes widened, suddenly wide awake. He looked up at Shoyo. “Marry me.”
Shoyo startled. “What? Was the joke really that funny? You’re not even laugh—mmph!”
Atsumu cut him off with a kiss. “It was the best damn thing I’ve ever heard. I don’t have a ring and I wasn’t plannin’ t’propose until we won gold together at the olympics, but right now just feels right.”
Shoyo blushed. “You’re serious?” he whispered.
Atsumu laughed, his eyes beginning to tear up. “Of course I’m being serious. Will ya marry me, Shoyo?”
Shoyo pulled him into a sudden kiss. “Yes. Yes, of course I’ll marry you.”
A tear slid down Atsumu’s cheek. He laughed, increasing in volume as he hugged Shoyo tightly. “I love ya so much, Shoyo.”
Shoyo smiled, matching tears falling down his cheeks. “I love you too.”
The two awoke the next morning to numerous missed calls and texts. Many of them were various people scolding them, but a few also sent them applause emojis with sarcastic congratulations. Shoyo nearly fainted when he saw that they were trending on Twitter. They had no idea that their relationship had garnered such a large following. In light of the realization, they decided it was best to wait before announcing their engagement.
The first person to find out was Kotaro, and word spread fast from there, as one could imagine.
