The Feeling of Understanding (The Sea of Space)

Summary:

All he'd wanted was an answer, but he feared he'd never get one.

Chapter 1: Floating

Chapter Text

Floating. The feeling of floating, being light-headed. It’s often used as a metaphor, however here, they can’t say as much.

The first day he remembers waking up in space, a place inbetween, was yesterday. Or maybe it was today? He has no real sense of time.

He was floating, nothing more than a mattress in the sky holding him up somehow. He couldn’t figure out what there was to see. It was like experiencing life and death at the same time.

Who was he? What was he? If he was just born why does it feel he’s lived forever? So many questions filled his head. It was like a dream, almost.

Dream, that’s a funny word.

What defines a dream? Was a dream simply visions or hallucinations, or perhaps a plan or a castle in the air. He’ll never know the answer. But he does know that it’s there waiting for him.

When he awoke, he was greeted with something new. Nothing more than a piece of plainly-colored fabric. He liked it though, it was new.

New things excite him. How could you blame him though? He’d only seen one image of what’s there and what’s not his whole existence.

However, he hoped for more. What was more though?

He didn’t pass out that night, he stayed awake. He enjoyed the way the mattress rocked, and the way the dots up above sparkled.

When the dots left though, he was once again alone, watching the blank sky and wishing he had more.

Dreaming. He made that up. A concept where every time things go dark, he’d see the things he wanted. Bright colors, faces of people he’d forget when he wakes. It was all a blur.

It all brought him back to what a dream was. He didn’t know, it seemed so foreign.

Has he had a dream this entire time? Was this all a dream?

It didn't make sense, but the universe wanted him to figure it out. It was begging for him to reach the solution, maybe that’s why he’s been receiving strange gifts. Maybe he was just one step away.
