Work Header

our love is like a clogged sink, overflowing

Summary:

Tumblr prompt, "why me?"

“No.” He stands and leans towards the mirror, rubbing his jaw absently. Should he shave for his girlfriend's parents? “We can do it ourselves, easy.” He sees her in the mirror out of the corner of his eye with a funny expression on her face. “What?”
“I’ve never snaked a drain before.”
“You’ve never snaked a drain before,” he repeats.
She shakes her head no.

Work Text:

“Uh uh, no,” Percy groans, still half asleep, the other half irritated to have been woken up. “Shut up,” he mumbles, turning over onto his other side and pulling the comforter over his head. “Or get out.”

“Percy…”

Annabeth pads across their bedroom floor, crawls onto the bed, and kneels by his hip. She tries to tug the comforter down, but Percy has a powerful grip on it, despite his sleepy state.

She resigns, instead crossing her legs and plucking at the seam of her leggings.

“You have to get up, babe. Perce. Come on.” She shakes a lump that’s probably his shoulder. “We’re having people over today. This shouldn’t be news to you, I told you about this...” She reaches for the comforter again and successfully pulls it down enough to reveal his dark head and tan upper back.

“Who?” Percy asks after a bit, voice muffled.

She crawls on top of his mostly blanketed form and he turns onto his back as she braces herself on straight arms.

“My dad. My stepmom.” She lovingly pushes his rowdy bed head hair out of his face. “And the apartment doesn’t look so good.”

“That’s today?”

She nods and he gives her a miserable look. Mouth hanging dejectedly, just one eye barely open. He closes his eyes and shakes his head into the pillows.

“So I need you to get up so we can clean.” She brushes her thumb along his long lashes. How is it fair for him to have such thick, dark lashes? “And Helen is expecting you to make dinner.”

Percy opens one eye again and grabs her hand from his face. He kisses her palm. “Expecting me? Why me?

An innocent look spreads over her face and she sits on his hips. “Well. Expecting us. But we both know how that’s gonna go down.”

Finally opening both eyes, Percy stretches his arms above his head and brings them down to rub her knees. “The things I do for you.”

“If we’re gonna go tit for tat, I’ve got a long list of things I’ve done for you. We can start with the knife wound-”

Percy tugs her down on him. “No tit for tat.” he says, yawning widely. He cups her cleaner, much more awake face in his hands.

“Don’t I at least get a kiss good morning?”

“No.” She kisses the back of the hand she's covered his mouth with. “Your breath smells pretty vile- ack!

Percy’s eyebrows had risen at the insult, and he licks her palm before rolling her laughing form beneath him.

“I don’t know,” he says, “if it’s the fact that you won’t let me sleep. After a 48 hour shift,” he’s breathing his hot, smelly breath into her face with every word and she’s fighting to free herself from under him. “Or the fact that you barged in here all fresh and demanding,” she’s pleading with him to let her go. “But I don’t really like you this morning.” Annabeth wrestles free and stumbles off the bed and to the door, simply calling out, “Clean up, buttercup! And tell me what you need for dinner so I can get groceries!”

He’s in the bathroom brushing his teeth when he hears her call to him again.

“Oh! The bathroom sink stopped draining!”

He looks down, toothbrush hanging from his mouth, and flicks the sink on. The sink slowly fills. It’s not draining. He mutters something under his breath, then yells back.

“Why didn’t you take care of this?

“I figured you could… I don’t know, water-blast it or something.”

He turns off the faucet and drags a hand through his hair. A glob of toothpaste/saliva swells at the end of his brush. It gathers slowly and eventually drops onto the counter.

He pulls the brush from his mouth and spits into the sitting water. “Yes, but…” he trails off, thinking to himself. “No, I can’t.” He opens the cabinet beneath the sink. “I don’t want to mess with the piping.”

He squats down and rummages through the clutter, looking for a couple things. “It needs to be snaked. Maybe hit with some Drano.”

Annabeth appears in the bathroom doorway. “Should I place a work order?”

“How did you get away with that? Those years with Remi?”

She shrugs, “We just called the maintenance guy. He never told management or charged us.”

Percy mutters, “I’m sure he didn’t,” before he turns and leans back against the counter, arms folded.

“Ok. You’re gonna add Drano and a snake to that grocery list.” She cracks a smile at his attitude but he continues on. “Then, you’re gonna come back here, and roll up your sleeves, and snake this drain yourself. And you’re gonna stop shoving your hair down the drain. In the shower, too.”

“Will that be all?” She looks up at him with wide, listening eyes and her hands clasped demurely behind her back.

“Don’t even try to be... coy or... whatever this is.”

“I’m not being anything. I just need to know if there's anything else you need from me.”

“I just need to know if there's anything else you need from me. Shut the fuck up.”

She smiles and steps to him, looping her arms around his neck. “If you snake the drain, I’ll let you snake mine, too. You can mess with my piping.”

His eyebrows jump and he uncrosses his arms to push her away. “No. That was terrible. You need to go.”

Annabeth laughs, holding his shoulders and shaking them as if it was that funny before she reaches for the elastic band of his boxers. She pulls them away from his hips and takes a peek. "That's a big 'ole snake you've got in there." He groans and firmly moves her hands away from his person and she backs out, laughing again, and leaves the cramped bathroom.

“I’ll do it, Perce, if you’re gonna make a big stink about it.”

Percy turns back to the sink to rinse the paste out of his mouth, grumbling “unbelievable.”
