Steven was so done.
He was fed up with Kevin treating him and Connie so terribly. Steven finally ran out of patience and told him to meet him at the beach. This has gone on for far too long. Almost 4 years, actually. Steven mostly just ignored him when he first started. Connie always told him to fight back, insult him and other things, and Steven would say that would be wasting their energy. But today, he has gone too far. He was trying to flirt with Connie. His girlfriend. He was also touching Connie. Sure, it was just on her arm, but she didn’t seem comfortable at all.
Steven was impatiently tapping his foot on the sand, waiting for Kevin to arrive. He checked his phone for the time. “5:45 pm… I told him to meet me here at 5:30! I wanted to meet him at 3:00, but I decided to give him time for homework and after school clubs. But this is what I get for being considerate.” Steven was about to go home when he suddenly heard Kevin’s voice. “Hey there, fatty.” Steven rolled his eyes. Even though Kevin came up with some of the worst insults, it still got on his nerves. “So you finally show up after… more than an hour?” Kevin chuckled. “Well I had to get all fancy and dressed to see my favorite gem-hybrid weirdo.” Steven sighed. “Ok, sure. But I just wanted to tell you that I am done with you treating me and Connie like crap. You need to stop. Why waste your time bothering people when there are hundreds of other things you could be doing with your life?” Kevin scoffed. “You seriously don’t remember, do you?”
Steven shook his head. “No, enlighten me.” Steven said sarcastically. “Well do you remember how we first met?” Steven nodded. “Well, you and your little girlfriend were in some weird fusion named Stevonnie. Then there’s 14 year-old me thinking that this was my chance at getting a girlfriend. But no! It was actually two little kids in a trench coat pretending to be older!” Steven tried his hardest not to laugh, but the chuckle escaped his lips. “Pfft! What? You’re still mad about that? That was years ago!” Steven continued to laugh while Keven was visibly disturbed. “Yeah, I’m still mad. I was interested in a hot babe, not two little idiot kids!” Kevin sighed heavily. “Look, I have a way to get what we both want.” Steven stopped laughing. “I’m listening.”
Kevin smirked. “How about a bet?” Steven frowned. “What kind of bet?” “Nothing complicated. Just race me. From your mailbox back to here.” Steven smiled. This isn’t going to be hard at all. I can just use my powers to- “And don’t think about using your powers, if you have any super speed or anything. I really don’t know anymore at this point…” Dammit! Steven sighed. “Fine.” Kevin chuckled. “Ok. I will do whatever you want me to do if you win, and vice versa.” Steven nodded. Kevin pulled out his phone and started a time for three seconds. Both got into a racing stance. “Oh, and by the way, if I win, you’re going to have to perform an apology dance in a monkey costume at the next Beach–a–palooza.” Kevin was taken aback by that, and when the 3-second timer went off, Steven got head start. Kevin got his focus again and ran after him. The two young men ran as fast as they could to the mailbox. Steven was struggling a bit. He kept thinking about what would happen if Kevin won. He shook his head and focused on the race.
He ran as fast as his legs could take him. Sooner or later, the both reached the mailbox. They were tied. They both tapped the mailbox and ran towards where they started. There was a rock where they were standing, so that was convenient. As Steven kept running, he was getting tired. I… can’t give up… not now… Kevin however was not getting tired. Great, I’m ahead. I’m not wearing some damn monkey costume. Kevin was getting closer to the rock. Steven was getting worried. He tried to speed up without using his powers. Then, before Steven could catch his breath, Kevin reached the rock.
Steven couldn’t believe it. Kevin beat him. No… Oh god no… Kevin threw his hands in the air and cheered. “Horaah! Looks like I beat you, Steven.” Steven walked the rest of the way. “Ugh. What do you want me to do?” Kevin smirked. “In my highschool, us seniors are having prom the day after tomorrow. I want you to be my date… but dressed up as a female.” Steven scoffed. “What the hell, Kevin? Are you so desperate for a girlfriend that you want me of all people to pretend?” Kevin rolled his eyes. “Ha, ha, ha. Whatever. Just try to get ready by Friday at 7:00pm, ok?” Steven rolled his eyes. “And why should I?” “If you do, I will finally stop flirting with Connie, and I will leave you both alone.” Steven sighed. “Fine. Just don’t tell Connie, ok?” Kevin nodded. and walked away from the beach. “See you later, babe.” Steven cringed at his wording. What is he going to tell Connie on Friday? He could lie and say he was going to Homeworld, but how would he explain him dressed up as a girl? He wasn’t sure. So he would just try and avoid being around her. I guess now I should be shopping for makeup, a dress, and a bra…. Ugh, this is annoying.
Steven was staring at himself in the mirror. He still can’t believe he was doing this... For Kevin of all people. At the same time though, he was doing this for Connie and himself. Kevin said he would leave them alone if he did this. But did he have to make him do something so ridiculous? Sure, he has dressed up in girl clothes before, but it was only for good ‘ol fun and curiosity, not as a punishment. There was another time where he dressed up in feminine clothes to help out a friend, Sadie. The difference between now and then is that back the, he was doing it because he wanted to. And he was being himself. This time, he has to pretend to be someone else. He has to conceal himself. If not, he will suffer with humiliation.
He was wearing a lot of makeup, mostly to hide his face so people wouldn’t recognize him. He wore a curly, black wig (also to hide his identity a little, and to look like a girl), A long, red dress, and red high heels to go with it. He truly did look like a female. Steven was sort of proud of himself. Now, all he needed was a pseudo. "Hm. What would be a good name?" Steven though for a few seconds. “Aha! I have the perfect name… Now I just have to wait for Kevin to pick me up.”
It was already 6:59pm and Steven needed to sneak out of the house. He couldn’t let the Crystal Gems see him like this. He can't let them see him as a stranger. (Especially if Kevin He tip-toed out of the bathroom and into the living room. No-one was there. He headed towards the front door. Once he was outside, He ran as fast as he could away from the house. And in the heels he was wearing, that was quite difficult. He sighed of relief when he reached his mailbox. Kevin’s car pulled up. Kevin stared at Steven with wide eyes. “St-Steven…?” Steven sighed. “Yep. let’s get this thing over with.” Steven got in the car and they drove off.
It was about 45 minutes until they reached the high school that Kevin attended. “Nice school." Steven said. “Uhh, thanks I guess?” Kevin replied. Kevin parked his car in the parking lot and the both got out. “May I hold your hand, Miss… Steven?” Steven scoffed. “That’s Stephanie to you.” Kevin laughed. “Ok, Miss Stephanie.” Kevin and Steven walked towards the school. Once they got inside, Steven stopped. “Huh?” Kevin said. “Why aren’t you walking?” “This is humiliating… I don’t want to do this.” Steven said, frowning. Kevin smiled with a shit-eating grin. “Well you have no choice. Unless you want me to continue flirting with your girlfriend and making your life a miserable hell, you have to do this.” Steven sighed. “...Fine.” They both opened the gym doors and walked inside. There was a shitload of people in that gym. They were all dancing, chatting, eating, and whatever else you do on prom. Steven felt a little bit of relief. Maybe people won't notice me… I do look like a normal girl. I’ll just blend in with the crowd…
Kevin all of the sudden got very excited when a male student came towards them. Steven didn’t recognize his face at first, but when he stepped closer, Steven felt his guts fall to the floor. It was Sour Cream. Someone he actually knew. “Hey, Kev.” Sour Cream said. “Hey dude. How’s the party so far?” Sour Cream shrugged. “It’s alright, I guess. Not as good as my parties, though.” Kevin nodded in agreement. "After this old ass DJ is done playing this song from the 90s, it's my turn to play some music. And I have a bomb ass playlist prepared for this party. With the latest hits from this decade." Kevin smiled. "That's cool. I'm glad that we came a little late so we wouldn't have to hear those other songs." "Wait, we?" Sour Cream looked at Steven. He looked confused. Steven started to panic a bit. I hope Sour Cream doesn’t recognize me… “Wait a minute…”
Steven’s heart stopped. “When were you going to introduce me to the lady, Kev?” Steven sighed of relief. Kevin stammered a bit. “O-oh! Y-yeah, uh… This is uh… Stephanie! She’s my date for tonight…” Sour Cream smiles. “Nice to meet you, Stephanie." Sour Cream offered his hand to shake. Steven smiled awkwardly and shook his hand. Kevin smirked at Steven. He had and idea. "Hey, Could you play like, a romantic song when its your turn? I kinda want to get… yoh know… personal wit my date here." Sour Cream nodded and chuckled. "Oh... I see. Alright. Anyways, how’s your night going, Stephanie?” Sour Cream said, expecting Steven to answer. Steven gulped. If he spoke, Sour cream would know who he is immediately. And if he didn’t recognize him, he would still know that he was a boy. Kevin wore a devilish grin. “Come on, Stephanie. Speak to him. Tell him how your night’s going.” Steven felt his gut sink. He was thinking of what to do. If he was younger, he could probably get away with doing a girl voice. But he was 18 now. His voice is too deep. Maybe I can pretend I’m mute… but I don’t know sign language! Dammit! Steven didn’t know what to do, so he just ran off.
Sour Cream was confused. “What’s wrong with her?” Kevin frowned. “She’s just shy. Don’t worry, I’ll talk to her.” Steven tried his best to blend in with the crowd. He didn’t want Kevin to find him. Maybe I can go hide in the bathroom. He wouldn’t dare to come into the ladies room, would he? Steven snuck out of the gym and into the hallway. He found the girls bathroom and went inside. Nobody else was here. “Thank God,” Steven said out loud. He decided to stay in the bathroom for a while. At least until Kevin found him. He walked into the handicapped stall and locked the door. He sat on the tile floor, sweating. “I can’t believe I’m doing this…” He said under his breath. He pulled out his phone from the purse that he bought. When he turned on the screen, he noticed that he had a few notifications. Most of them were text messages. From Connie. Steven gulped. He was a bit nervous. He didn’t know why, though. He checked the messages.
“Hey. Steven. I just wanted to remind you of our date today… We're supposed to meet at my house at 7:00pm. Sorry if ur busy rn, just wanted 2 remind u :)”
“Hey Stevie. It’s already 6:40. I hope ur on ur way here. I’ll see u ^^”
“Um, its way past 7… Where are you?”
'-5 Missed calls from “Connie”.'
Steven shuddered. Goddammit Kevin! Steven was having a mini panic attack. For one second he questioned why he was doing this again. He knew he was doing this to stop the bullying from Kevin, but really, why? Why did Kevin want him to dress up like a girl? Couldn’t he have done something else like pay his bills? Give him free car washes at his Dad’s car wash? Something else greedy and cheap? Steven could think of hundreds of alternate options, but he had to face reality. Now he’s hiding in the girl’s bathroom panicking.
Kevin was looking all around the Gymnasium trying to find his faux date. He was getting a bit nervous. Did he leave…? He couldn't have. We made a deal, and he wouldn't do that to Connie. He’s probably somewhere in a corner, hiding from me. Doing everything he can to avoid me... Kevin stopped walking. He thought for a minute. He could be outside. Kevin exited the gym and when out into the hallway. Then he heard a groan come from the girls bathroom. That voice didn’t sound like a female voice… It's definitely Steven.
Kevin looked around to see if anyone else was in the hallway. Nobody was there. So he crept inside the girl’s bathroom. Nobody was by the sink. He would have to look in the stalls. Steven stopped moving. Someone was in the bathroom. He looked through the crack of the stall door. Goddammit! Kevin! He needed to stay as still and quiet as possible. He did not want to be found. He started thinking to himself.
-YOU DON’T WANT TO BE HERE AT ALL. YOU ARE MISSING OUT ON QUALITY TIME WITH YOUR GIRLFRIEND!-
I know Connie is a very busy young woman, already two years into college. Even though she’s only 18...
-THIS WAS THE ONE TIME THAT YOU COULD BE ABLE TO SPEND TIME WITH HER. AND YOU AGREE TO THIS? WHY? WAS THERE ANOTHER REASON? WAS IT A FEELING DEEP DEEP DOWN INSIDE THAT YOU ARE DOING THIS BECAUSE YOU LIKE IT? -
Sure, I dress up as a girl sometimes for fun…
-BUT CROSS DRESSING ISN’T THE ISSUE HERE! IT’S THE FACT THAT YOU’RE DOING THIS FOR KEVIN. DO YOU HAVE FEELINGS FOR HIM?-
Steven couldn’t believe that he asked himself that question. Kevin came closer to his bathroom stall. He looked down to the floor to look for a pair of legs. If Steven was in one of the other smaller stalls, Kevin would've known immediately. But in the handicapped stall, he actually had to look. He knocked on the door. “Steven! Come out, I already know you’re in here.” Steven’s heart jumped. “Please… just come with me back to the party. I know you don’t want to do this but the faster you come, the sooner this can be done.” Maybe I should have worded that differently… eh. Steven sighed. Kevin was right. Let’s get this over with I guess. Steven slammed open the stall with an angry expression on his face. Kevin sighed. "You’re just making things a lot harder than it needs to be."
Kevin and Steven were walking towards the gym. Steven was annoyed. He was more annoyed at himself than he was at Kevin. But at the same time he was motivated. The faster he could get through the night, the faster he could go home. But no matter what happens, Steven know he would still have to explain some things to Connie. As they entered, Kevin put a hand on Steven's shoulder. He whispered under his breath. "Alright, Stephanie. You won't run off like that again, right?" Steven nodded, still wearing an annoyed expression on his makeup-covered face. "Good girl… now come with me to the dance floor." Steven rolled his eyes. "Why?" Kevin chuckled. "To dance! Why else would we go to the dance floor? To stand there and spin around? That's really dumb of you." Steven sucked his teeth. "No, I know what a dance floor is for. I'm asking why do we have to dance?" Kevin ignored that and grabbed Steven's hand. He speed walked towards the dance floor. He pushed by other students to get in the middle. The center of attention. Kevin looked at the DJ Station. Good. It's Sour Cream's turn.
Sour Cream was typing something on his laptop. Seconds later, a romantic, R&B song started playing. Steven blushed at the suggestive tone of this song. It had an impassioned instrumental behind the spicy lyrics. The singer was a female, and she is quite the singer. Steven didn't recognize her, but her seductive voice complemented the lewd lyrics very well. He looked at Kevin, who was now standing in front of him. Kevin was grinning. Steven should feel uncomfortable… but he was feeling something else. He was… No. It can't be. Maybe I'm overreacting. I've listened to lewd songs before, I never felt this way about them. Maybe… it isn't the song. Maybe the song is just a minor part of this. Am I… do I… Kevin held both of Steven's hands. He leaned closer to his ear. "Shall we dance…?" Steven gulped, and then he nodded.
They started moving to the sound of the music. As they were slow dancing, Kevin was staring into Steven's very soul. He was smiling. "Having a nice evening?" Steven nodded. He wasn't really listening to Kevin. He was listening to his own thoughts. Contemplating on what his relationship was with Kevin. He broke it down. Ok. -Is Kevin annoying?-
Yes.
-Is he a jerk?-
Yes.
-Is he very smart?-
No.
-Does he even care about how you feel right now?-
No.
-Does he want to date your girlfriend?-
Yes.
-So, there should be no doubt that he is your enemy, right?-
…I don't know… Right now… this feels magical.
-WHAT?!? WHY?-
I'm not sure.. By put the way he's holding my waist… they way he's staring at me… I could be in love with him.
-You do realize that he could be looking at you this way because he's a PERVERT, right?? You're confused. Kevin is a jerk. Connie is your love, not him.-
Steven 's brain is right. But so is his heart. Which one Should he listen to? Steven knew what to do now.
He leaned in and gave Kevin a kiss.
