1st SCENE: PRESENT TIME
“This was a stupid idea…such a stupid idea,” Kara sighed while pacing relentlessly back and forth in front of the dark blue blanket she and Alex had just spread out on the grass. “Why did I even think it’d be a good idea? I’m an idiot, that’s why-”
“Hey, hey…Kara!” Alex interrupted her grumbles. “Stop that, okay?” she said, placing both of her hands on Kara’s shoulders and shaking them in the hopes of snapping her out of her panic. “Lena loves you. You know that. What you’re doing is very brave, but don’t forget who we’re talking about here. That woman has loved you for years, regardless of everything else.”
Kara took a deep breath while looking at their surroundings. Alex and her had come to this hill an hour ago to make sure everything was perfectly ready for when Lena and Sam arrive. On top of the blanket they’d placed some lit candles, some sweet fruits and tarts (Lena’s favorites from the Danvers bake shop), and a bottle of rich aged red wine—the best Kara could get her hands on.
Today was going to be one of the most significant days of her life. She was going to ask Lena to become her life companion, her confidante. Kara was going to offer all of her heart to her. Deep down, Kara knew that Lena loved her just as much as she loved Lena. Their relationship had flourished over the years and Kara believed that nobody else could ever make her feel the way that Lena did. No one but Lena gave her butterflies with just a simple kiss, often exchanged in dark hidden hallways, away from prying eyes.
Lena Luthor is the love of her life. As far as feelings were concerned, Kara was completely sure of that. Their mutual love wasn’t the problem, her fluttering heart wasn’t what was making Kara so nervous, so anxious of something that felt so natural and true. The problem was that Lena wasn’t just anyone. Lena, the woman she’s deeply in love with, is the queen of their kingdom. As such, being the ruler meant that she couldn’t love someone like Kara, the baker’s daughter. Her social status being what it was meant that her people, advisors, and neighboring kingdoms all expected more.
Kara knew exactly where she stood, she had known since the beginning. When she was only 17 years old and already unavoidably in love with the king’s daughter, Kara knew that loving Lena wasn’t going to be easy, but regardless of their different life-styles the last seven years had been the happiest of her life.
Kara knew that Lena was expected to marry a handsome prince or beautiful princess. Marriages of convenience are how kingdoms strengthen their bonds. Even so, Kara had decided that she would love and support Lena always. She knew that her Queen may have to pretend to love another, or that she may actually fall in love with her arranged husband or wife. Either way, Kara was prepared to step aside and be there for Lena in any way she could, whether she needed love, advice, support, or even some fresh-baked lemon tarts.
“—should be here soon…Kara?” the blonde woman was too lost in her own thoughts to realize her sister was talking to her. “Did you hear a word of what I said?” Alex inquired with a teasing grin painted on her face.
Kara blushed as she struggled to keep still, “I’m sorry Alex, I don’t know what is going on with me.” She sighed for the hundredth time that evening. “I was so confident this morning, but now I’m feeling… I don’t know—I-I’m so—”
“Kara, first of all take a deep breath, we’ve been over this,” Alex, bless her, was always ready to keep her grounded, even when Kara herself felt like bolting away to hide under a rock at the edge of the known world. “You know Lena better than anyone else, what are you so afraid of?”
“Alex, in case you forgot, this is the queen we’re talking about! What do you mean what am I afraid of?” Kara snapped before realizing what she was doing. “I’m sorry—There’s just so much I’m afraid of.” Kara cast her blue eyes to the ground, almost feeling ashamed of how insecure she was acting right then. “What if she says no? What if she rejects me, Alex? What if she looks at me with pity in her eyes? I love her so much, I just want to be there for her. I want her to know she can always count on me, no matter what. I never want her to feel alone again. But what if this is too much for her?” she exclaimed, while fidgeting with the small wooden box in her pants pocket. Inside of it lay her most precious possession, her mother’s ring.
It was but a simple gold band, surely not worth much to a prince, princess, or high lord. Even so, it was nearly all she had left of her real family. Her mother had gifted it to her when she was thirteen, days before the deadly fire. When she looked at it, she could still see her mother’s tender smile as she whispered, “Many years ago, before you were born, I gave this ring to your father because I knew he was the love of my life. Now we want you to have it, Kara. One day, when the time comes, you’ll know in your heart who this ring belongs to.”
And like her mother said, Kara knew in her heart that this ring belonged to Lena. The question now was, would Lena accept it?
“Kara, I love you. You’re the most loyal person I know,” Alex stated, a last attempt to calm her nerves. She could see two mounted horses currently making their way up the hill. “Lena loves you for who you are, and that is an incredibly kind, compassionate and honest woman. She can see that— everyone can. You’ve always been there for her and I can see the way her eyes light up when you show up. It’s wonderful that you want to show her how much she means to you. Lena would be a fool not to appreciate it. I know she’s the queen, but she’s also your Lena. Have some faith in her.”
Her sister finished with a smile and Kara only had the time to nod her understanding before Sam’s voice reached them. “Hi there! It looks beautiful up here. Are those blueberry tarts? Can you guys spare some for me?”
Kara smiled at Sam’s antics. For as long as she’d known her, the knight always managed to make the most natural entrances. Also, she never missed how her sister’s smile would widen anytime she’d hear the sound of Sam’s voice
“Don’t get your hopes up Sam, you know how my sister’s appetite can be,” Alex joked before turning towards Lena to greet her with a bow, “Your Highness.”
“Rise Alex. Please, there’s no need for such formalities out here.” Lena dismounted her horse with practiced ease while Kara took a couple of steps in her direction. The queen was wearing a blue dress, beautiful but still comfortable enough to ride in. Her luscious raven hair cascaded down her back and shoulders in soft curls, and her vivid green eyes were sparkling in the late afternoon sun. She was a vision Kara held dear to her heart and, in that moment, she wished she could somehow freeze time just to stare at Lena a moment longer.
“Lena, you look wonderful,” the blonde complimented, offering her right hand for the brunette to take. “I know it’s been a stressful few days for you, but I was hoping I could cheer you up with some of your favorites.” Kara felt Lena take her hand and intertwine their fingers as they looked upon each other.
“Thank you, Kara. You’re just what I need right now.” Lena leaned in, laying a soft and tender kiss on Kara’s lips, uncaring that Sam and Alex were still there.
“And that’s our cue to leave. “Sam pulled on her horse’s reins and motioned to Alex to do the same, “We’ll be on our way. You two lovebirds try not to have too much fun now,” she chuckled as Alex mounted on her own steed, “Oh, and I was serious about those tarts!”
Alex rolled her eyes. “C’mon Sam, let’s go see if my mother has any left at the shop,” Before leaving, she spared Kara one last glance and could still see her sister looked worried. “You’re both going to have a great evening.” She winked, then she and Sam began making their way down the hill towards the town.
Kara stared at her sister’s back for a moment, trying to gather the courage to do what she was about to. Alex was right, she needed to trust Lena. It was simple; they were going to enjoy some nice food, some good wine, watch the sunset, and then Kara was going to offer Lena her ring.
And so it was. Kara and the queen spent the remainer of the afternoon talking, exchanging gentle kisses, and making up for three days of not having seen each other, and the blonde was loving it. This was where she belonged, with Lena. Making her smile, spending time with her, sharing her thoughts, her worries, and soon, her deepest feelings for her.
Even though they’d told each other “I love you” many times over the years, this time felt different for Kara. This felt like a life changing moment. She was either about to feel the most precious joy or suffer the most excruciating pain. What if Lena refused her? No, she couldn’t go there. Not at this point.
Just as they were finishing the last of the tarts, Kara’s endless appetite having a lot to do with that, the blonde noticed a shiver run down the queen’s spine.
“Lee, are you cold?” The sun had set some time prior, and the first stars where already starting to light up the night’s sky.
“I’m fine, Kar. Just a little chilly, but that can be easily fixed if you just come a little closer.”
Kara’s lips turned up at the sultry sound of Lena’s voice. Before complying with her request, she reached over to one of the chests lying beside them and pulled out a heavy woolen blanket. She knew they’d need it eventually as the sun set. Wrapping it around both of their shoulders, she scooted closer to her lover and placed a lingering kiss on her temple.
“I love you Kara,” breathed Lena, soaking in the affection. Taking in their surroundings, she continued, “It’s beautiful up here. Thank you for doing all of this for me. I couldn’t imagine a better evening, nor a better person to spend it with.” Lena turned to face the slightly older woman, and reached up to caress her cheek with her. Kara leaned into her touch, and soon Lena was closing the short distance between them and joining their lips.
The kiss was soft, slow. The kind of kiss that tried to convey all the emotions words alone couldn’t. Kara’s heart was pounding in her chest, and the butterflies that permanently resided in her stomach every time she was close to Lena were dancing. Lena gently stroked Kara’s lower lip with her tongue, asking for entrance. Kara opened her moth without a second thought, allowing their tongues to begin the sweetest battle.
Alas, eventually they had to pull apart just enough to take in much needed air. Kara gently pressed her forehead against Lena’s, taking in her smile and shimmering pale green eyes. It was now or never. She needed to do this.
With a soft sigh, Kara reached up and tucked a stray curl behind Lena’s ear before running that hand down the side of her neck. The tender touch evoked a shiver in the younger woman, as if she knew this moment meant more. “There’s something that I need to say.”
The words were spoken softly, barely more than a whisper, but they held an air of mystery, something that definitely made Lena’s brow furrow. The queen shifted slightly as she eyed Kara get to her feet, “Is everything alright, darling?” asked Lena, raising to feet as well, standing just a few inches form Kara. Her lover was fidgeting with her fingers, a nervous tick of hers. “You know you can tell me if anything is wrong.” She reached out the blonde, taking her left hand into her own in an attempt to soothe her.
“Yes Lee, I mean… No, everything is fine. I-I just have something…Something very important I need—I need to say and I was thinking this might be the right time since you… you know, it’s such a beautiful night and I—”
After so many years together, Lena could tell that Kara had something important to say. She knew well that Kara only stumbled over her words when something heavy was on her mind.
“Kara, take a deep breath. It’s been a lovely evening and I have you to thank for that,” she said. She attempted making eye contact with Kara’s baby blues, but they seemed determined to look everywhere except her. “Hey, look at me.”
The sound of Lena’s sweet voice, paired with a slight squeeze of her hand, helped Kara find the courage she needed to come out with the true depth of her feelings. Her queen was right; this moment was perfect. She looked at Lena, taking in the mesmerizing sight of her as well as the starred night sky and the small lights that illuminated the town and the castle.
Her eyes met Lena’s, and Kara realized it was finally time to take the leap.
“Lena,” she began with a shaking voice, “My love, my heart, my queen,” Kara held Lena’s left hand tight in her own and dropped down to one knee as the brunette watched on with confusion. “Since the first moment I saw you almost nine years ago, I knew you’d change my life forever. Every day has been better than the last, just knowing that you were in my life and that I could come home to you each day. You’re the best thing that could have ever happened to me and there’s nothing in this world that I cherish more than you.” Pausing to breathe, Kara noticed Lena’s eye wear tearing up more and more as she spoke. She could only hope this was a good sign.
“I know you haven’t had the easiest time lately—” Kara’s free hand went to her pants pocket, feeling the outline of the ring box, “but I want you to know that you are not alone Lee.”
“Kara…I—” Lena tried to interrupt but the blonde was quick continue.
“Please, let me finish. Otherwise, I might lose my nerve and I’m not sure if I’ll ever have the courage to try this again,” she implored, chuckling nervously. At Lena’s weak nod, Kara continued, “When I was younger, just before she died, my mother gave me her ring and told me that one day I’d know in my heart who it belonged to. You’re that person Lena; you’re the love of my life. And I know that we can never be together publicly with you being the queen and me being…well, me. But that doesn’t mean I can’t stay by your side and offer you my love, my support, and anything else I can give you.”
Kara broke eye contact with her queen long enough to quickly fish out the wooden box. She opened it up and presented the priceless gold band to Lena in one surprisingly swift move. “Lena Luthor, will you allow me to be your companion for life?” The blonde felt her eyes water, but she expectantly held her breath waiting for Lena’s answer.
Studying her lover’s face, she noticed how Lena’s jaw had fallen open in surprise. She seemed to be at a loss for words. Her eyes were fixed on the ring held between them. Kara’s heart was pounding so hard she feared the queen would be able to hear it. The more Lena stayed silent, the more Kara could feel it beating in her ears. “Of course, you don’t have to wear it. I know--I know it’s just a simple ring, but it’d still mean a lot to me if you accepted it…If you’d allow me to be by your side for as long as you’d have me,” Kara finished in a trembling voice yet hopeful voice. She was eager for an answer.
It seemed like an eternity passed before Lena broke out of her stupor. Her jaw clenched, her lower lip trembling as tears began falling from her eyes. “Kara…I…I can’t.”
Kara’s stomach dropped.
2nd Scene: 9 years earlier
“Kara!” Kara awoke with a start, hearing Alex’s loud voice first thing in the morning certainly wasn’t the best way to start the day. “What are you doing still in bed? Mom’s been calling you for over thirty minutes! You better get the hell down to the shop if you don’t want her to kill you.”
Kara let out a groan, covering her still sleepy eyes with an arm. “Ugh Alex, it’s still so early. The sun’s not even up yet!”
“What!?” Alex exclaimed, striding over to the curtains and pulling them wide open in their shared room. “What do you call that?” she asked, waving at the light that poured in from the window. “Seriously, you need to deliver Mom’s sweets to the castle today, you know that. They have to be there before lunch time.”
“Fine, fine. I know,” sighed Kara, pulling back her blanket and conceding to another day of deliveries. “I’m up, okay? Please tell Elize that I’ll be ready in a minute.”
Alex nodded, leaving the room to go back to help her mother serve clients and prepare the best baked goods in the kingdom.
Kara’s life had changed a lot since her parents had died two years earlier. Growing up, she’d lived on a small farm not too far from the capital. She’d taken care of their farm animals, including cows, chickens, and of course horses (her favorites). Her family lived a quiet life, taking care of their land, their cattle, and sometimes had to go into town to sell cheese, flour, or vegetables. That was actually how her parents had become close friends with the Danvers. Jeremiah and his wife Eliza owned the best bakery in the capital and they loved the flour her family, the Zor-Els, produced.
When the fire took her parents from her, along with all of her family’s possessions, the Danvers didn’t hesitate to welcome Kara into their family. They cared for her like one of their own, providing Kara with food, shelter, and love.
Both Kara and Alex worked at the Danvers’ bakery, helping Eliza to prepare the baked goods, and to deliver them throughout the capital, sometimes to the great castle itself.
Kara loved delivering to the castle because the people who worked in the kitchens usually sent her off with some delicious leftovers from the royal family’s dinner.
The royal family consisted of just two individuals: King Lionel Luthor, one of the greatest and kindest kings their land had ever known, and his only daughter, Princess Lena Luthor, whom Kara had never met. King Lionel’s wife, Queen Kieran, had passed away years ago. Kara had been just a child, but she remembered her parents talking about the King’s loss, and how he had no plans to remarry after losing the love of his life.On some level, Kara felt she could relate to the King, even the King, even though at that point she’d had no real idea of what love was. Yes, Kara had experienced familial love; she’d loved her birth parents, and she loved Eliza, Jeremiah and Alex. But she had never experienced romantic love. When she’d visit the capital’s main square, full of life and movement, she’d hear bards singing songs of true love. Those songs always managed to bring a smile to her face. In her heart, she hoped that one day she’d be able to truly understand their meaning.
That kind of songs always managed to brighten her smile, and, in her heart, she hoped one day she’d be able to understand the feeling fully.
Every day, Kara began her morning by dressing in a pair of slightly worn-out brown pants and a long-sleeved shirt. Today, her shirt was plain white and hung slightly loose, molding nicely to her body. Although she was most likely going to be led into the kitchens by the side entrance the cooks and servants used, she was still heading to the royal castle and she needed to look presentable. After arranging her long, blonde locks in an easy ponytail, Kara rushed down the stairs, ready to receive and earful from Eliza about running late.
As she entered the shop, her nose was met with the moth-watering scent of freshly baked bread. Her stomach growled as her eyes swept over the delicious food on the display counter. Alina, the local seamstress, was the only customer at that time. She was a kind old lady, always happy to mend Kara and Alex’s clothes when they were falling apart, and always free of charge.
“Good morning, Alina!” Kara greeted with a broad smile before turning towards her father who was standing behind the counter. “Hi Jeremiah!”
Alina acknowledged her with a sweet wave while her father grinned and responded fondly, “Morning sleepyhead! You should head to the kitchen before—"
“Is that Kara I hear?” Eliza’s voice made its way out of the kitchen, “Get in here Kara! You’re late!”
“Coming!” Kara rushed to her mother, apology already halfway out of her mouth as she entered the kitchen. “I’m sorry I’m late! I’ll get the food to the castle in no time, I promise!”
Their kitchen was a spacious room. In the center stood a large wooden table, regularly covered in a thin layer of flour. Towards the back of the room stood a wood-fire oven that was constantly in use, working hard like Eliza herself. Spread throughout the room were small baskets filled with baked bread, sweet breads with cardamom, barley, dried fruits, raisins, and tarts of all kinds.
Eliza, who’d been standing by the large oven, turned toward Kara and gave her a brief sideways glance, a motherly smile gracing her face. “Look who’s finally here!” Her tone wasn’t exactly angry, but she did sound slightly annoyed. “These two baskets need to be taken to the castle right away,” she said, motioning to a smaller table where two large wicker baskets laid, ready to be delivered.
Kara wasn’t able to see the contents of the baskets, since they’d been covered with a red cloth, but she could tell they were filled to the brim. The young girl nodded. “Okay, I’ll be there in no time!”
Before she could pick up the baskets, Eliza stopped her. “Wait,” she said, opening the oven and pulling out a fresh loaf of cinnamon bread, “Here, this is for you.” Eliza cut a generous slice of the sweet treat and handed it to Kara on a small, clean piece of cloth. “Be careful, it’s still hot.”
Kara’s eyes lit up at the sight of the delicious food. She hurried over to her mother and took the offered slice. “Thank you!” she mumbled around a mouthful of fresh bread, unbothered by its temperature. She moaned as the sweet taste of cinnamon melted in her mouth, loving every bite of the treat.
She devoured her breakfast in record time and said goodbye to her mother. Grabbing the baskets, she skipped out of the bakery, being careful not to spill her precious cargo. She’d hate for the royal family to miss out on Eliza’s wonderful baking.
The journey to the castle wasn’t a long one. Her family’s shop was just ten minutes away from the main square, and from there it was another few minutes to the royal castle. The capital itself wasn’t extremely large. Kara loved every corner of it—how it was always buzzing with life. Her favorite activities included wandering through the market, taking in the strange products from far off lands, and spending money on the most delicious honeyed meat skewers.
As she approached the tall gray walls of the castle, Kara greeted the two purple cloaked guards keeping watch out front. They nodded their heads in recognition and allowed her to pass through the small side entrance that would take her to the kitchens. This entrance was reserved for deliveries of goods by local farmers and merchants. That entrance was specifically made for the several farmers who delivered food to the castle every day, and, since Kara herself sometimes used it, the guard stationed at its side already knew her.
Nodding in return, Kara made her way inside. The kitchen itself was huge and seemed to have every cooking utensil imaginable, including knives and pots of all sizes—everything the cooks could need to prepare banquets for the nobles. From knives of different sizes, to huge pots that were most likely used when the cooks needed to prepare a banquet for the nobles. Bounties of fresh vegetables littered the spacious counters, and the ceiling was lined with strings of dried meats. Kara’s mouth watered just by the smell that was lingering in the air, wondering what kind of food was producing that wonderful aroma.
What was more impressive was that this was only the secondary kitchen. Kara wondered what the main one looked like. Looking around, she noticed a copper pot stewing over the fireplace, yet surprisingly, no one was tending to it. She guessed most of the cooking was going on in the other room. There was still a few hours till lunch needed to be ready.
Kara knew that she couldn’t just leave the goods without handing them over to one of the kitchen staff. Not wanting to roam around freely, she decided to wait. Propping the baskets on a table, she settled down on a nearby chair and waited for someone to appear. Only five minutes had passed when she heard shuffling coming from the doorway to her left. Sitting up, she expected to see a cook or servant enter.
Instead, Kara watched as a young girl made her way into the room. She knew right away that this wasn’t a servant girl. A lower-class worker could never afford to dress in such a beautiful burgundy gown. Her fine black hair was styled in an elegant bun and there were shimmering, expensive bracelets along her slim arms. Taking in the girl’s gorgeous face, with a sharp jaw and emerald green eyes, Kara realized that before her was the one and only Princess Lena Luthor.
The blonde had only seen the princess from afar a couple of years earlier, but there was no mistaking who she was. As soon as Kara realized who exactly had entered the room, she scrambled to her feet, ready to bow down in a courtesy. She couldn’t help but be painfully aware of how underdressed she felt while in the future queen’s presence.
“P-Princess Lena Luthor!” stuttered Kara in greeting. Not knowing the proper way to great a member of the royal family, she kept her gaze towards the floor in hopes of showing respect.
The princess startled, clearly not having expected anyone to be in this room.
“Uhm, hi,” the brunette replied. Studying the stranger before her, she continued, “Are you a new servant? I don’t think I’ve seen you around the castle before.” With a furrowed brow, she approached Kara, expecting an answer.
“Oh, no. I-I’m from the Danvers’ Bakery,” Kara hurried to explain, finally shifting her gaze from the floor to the princess’ face. “I have a delivery for the castle b-but no one was in here so I thought I would…that I’d wait for a cook or someone before leaving. I certainly didn’t think I’d run into you, Your Highness. Not that it isn’t my great pleasure, Your Grace, I just…”
Kara was aware she was rambling but couldn’t stop the words from spilling from her mouth. Luckily for her, Princess Lena prevented her from making even a bigger fool out of herself. Alex was never going to let her live this down…
“Wait, wait, wait!” The princess interrupted her rant, her eyes shifting from Kara’s nervous figure to the baskets that where laying on the table next to her. “You said you’re from the Danvers’ Bakery?”
Deciding that it was best not to talk, lest she start another embarrassing rant, Kara nodded her head.
At the acknowledgement, Princess Lena’s eyes lit up. Excitedly, she drew closer to Kara and the baskets. “You have the best fruit tarts in the whole kingdom! Please, tell me there’s some n there, “she begged, pointing at the baskets with an adorable pout making its way across her face.
“Uhm, I’m not sure. It was my mother who packed them, but I guess there could be some inside,” Kara answered. She desperately hoped there were some tarts in there. For some unknown reason, she felt that seeing the princess’ smile would make her whole week.
“Well, let’s take a look then!” Lena proclaimed. Her delicate, ring-adorned hands rushed to uncover the closest basket, uncaring if the goods Kara delivered where supposed to stay untouched until lunch. Kara figured Lena was the princess and, as such, she was free to do as she pleased. Endless fruit tarts, what a great life that must be, thought Kara.
Underneath the cloth there where dozens of fruit tarts, all neatly stacked by Eliza’s careful hand. Lemon, strawberry, blueberry, raspberry—the variety of flavors was astonishing, and Kara found herself wondering which one would be Lena’s favorite.
The blonde chanced a look at the princess, smiling softly when she found her eyes sparking with joy. “I love this!” she exclaimed, clapping her hands in front of her chest. “When I sneaked in here to look for a sweet snack, I certainly wasn’t expecting to find these!”
The green-eyed girl grabbed a lemon-flavored tart, moaning as she bit into it. Kara knew Eliza’s baking was an explosion of flavors, but the delighted expression on the princess’ face was further confirmation.
Standing beside Lena, Kara observed her take her first bite with an amused expression. Noticing Kara staring at her, Lena turned to face her. “What’s your name?”
The blonde raised her eyebrows in surprise, not expecting the princess to show any interest in her beside her relation to the food in front of them. “I’m Kara, Your Highness.”
Grinning up at her, Lena nodded. “Well Kara, what are you waiting for?” With a mischievous look and a motion of her chin, the princess pointed Kara towards the full basket. “Help yourself!”
Kara felt her heart swell, excited at the prospect of eating tarts with the princess. However, she remembered her position, deciding to be cautious. Princess Lena could probably get away with almost anything, but Kara knew the same didn’t apply for herself.
“Your Grace, I’m not sure it’s my place to eat—”
Kara hesitantly began, but the brunette immediately interrupted her. “I won’t tell if you won’t.” With a wink and a smirk from the princess, Kara felt her resolve melt and a new, warm feeling making its way into her chest. “What’s your favorite flavor?”
Kara smiled at the thought of the Princess caring about her opinion. She began to relax and feel more like herself. “Strawberry, Your Highness,” she replied.
“Mhm, yes that would’ve been my guess.” The princess reached out to one of the baskets, picked out a strawberry tart and gently offered it to Kara. In return, Kara reached out to receive the tart, her fingertips tingling as they brushed against Lena’s soft skin. “Oh, and Kara?”
“Yes, Your Highness?”, Kara replied slightly confused.
The princess smirked once again, playfully nudging Kara with her elbow, “Anyone that I secretly share delicious tarts with are allowed to call me Lena.”
As they spent the next few minutes together talking and laughing, Kara’s nervousness eased completely. When Lena took her leave with a gentle kiss upon her cheek and a promise to meet again, Kara felt herself blush, the first of many to come.
3rd scene: 7 years earlier
Lena’s bedroom was one of Kara’s favorite places in the whole kingdom. Although it reflected the riches and the splendor of the princess’ status, it also perfectly echoed Lena’s kind heart and sharp mind.
For starters, the large room held a queen size bed overflowing with fluffy pillows and the most precious silk sheets. Kara, used to rough wool and straw pillows, could only imagine how comfortable it’d be to sleep in such a soft bed.
A few feet in front of it was a dark oak table upon which laid stacks of papers on all kinds of subjects. Kara knew how much Lena loved to study. She was always reading, whether it was books for fun or reports regarding the kingdom’s affairs.
A large window spanned the east side of the room. It provided the princess with a great view of the whole city and the snow-capped mountains in the distance.
The wall opposite the window was completely covered by the largest bookcase that Kara had ever seen. Within it lived all of Lena’s favorite books; from the fairytales her mother would read to her when she was a kid, to compendiums full of fascinating topics like Astronomy and Medicine.
To say she was a bookworm would be an understatement, yet Kara loved her for it.
That’s right— Love. And not in a she’s my best friend way. In a ‘I’m completely and utterly in love with you even though I stand no chance’ way.
Ever since that fateful morning she and Lena had eaten their first fruit tarts, the two had become almost inseparable—or as close to inseparable as you could be when your best friend was the heir to a powerful throne while you delivered baked goods.
Although Kara knew she’d probably never have the guts to bring up her true feelings, she was quite satisfied with just having Lena in her life as a friend. The princess wasn’t only beautiful and powerful, she was kind and intelligent in a way that left you stunned—especially if you didn’t know her.
Kara had been attracted to the princess since she first met her, but since they’d gotten closer, she’d realized how special Lena really was.
The princess cared deeply about everybody, be it her friends, her servants, her personal guard—Sam— or her people.
The brunette was still young— had just turned seventeen a couple of months ago— but she already had the makings of a strong, fair queen. The kind of ruler her kingdom would flourish under even more than it was now under King Lionel.
Kara found herself smiling as she thought about her best friend, waiting eagerly for the moment she’d walk inside her room and find the blonde there.
Along with her father, the princess had been away on a visit to King Spheere’s kingdom, a long-time ally to the Luthors. As much as Kara had been missing Lena for the past week, she knew these kinds of visits were necessary to keep the bond between the kingdoms strong.
Unfortunately, that knowledge didn’t stop her from feeling a hint of sadness and jealousy. It was a feeling she only felt at the thought of Lena visiting with Prince Jack.
Of course, she knew she was being irrational. Lena was bound to marry a high-born prince or princess, but that still didn’t stop Kara from hoping their lingering touches or the subtle glances weren’t just a figment of her fervid imagination. Could what they had be more than friendship? Could Lena possibly return her feelings?
The blonde shook her head to herself. It was wishful thinking to believe that their close physical friendship would ever be more than that.
In the real world, Lena would eventually marry Prince Jack and Kara would be happy for her. No matter how many pieces her broken heart would be in.
Just as she was envisioning Lena in a gorgeous dress on the day of her wedding, she heard the door open.
She whipped her head around, knowing nobody but the princess would dare enter Lena’s room without knocking first.
“Lena!” exclaimed Kara with a gleeful smile. She quickly covered the distance between them to envelop the princess in a warm but fierce hug. “I can’t tell you how much I’ve missed you!”
In a rather personal way that was definitely not usual of friends, the blonde breathed in Lena’s unmistakable scent. It was a unique mixture of sweet honey, a fragrant note of lemon, and something that could only be described as just Lena.
“Oh Kara,” Lena sighed, embracing her just as tightly, “I missed you too. I couldn’t wait to get back!”
The blonde reluctantly released her hold on the princess, wishing she could just hold her forever. It had only been a little over a week since they last saw each other, but seeing Lena’s gorgeous, if a bit tired, face was like a breath of fresh air after spending a lifetime underwater.
She was suddenly even more grateful Lena had instructed Sam to bring her to her room before leaving, just so she could be one of the first people to welcome her back.
Kara trailed her hands from Lena’s back to her shoulders, coming down her arms until they found the raven-haired girl’s hands. Gently lacing her fingers with Lena’s, Kara softly asked, “How was the trip? Did you have fun with Prince Jack?”
Without letting go of her hands, Lena walked Kara towards the bed, pulling them both down to sit on it. “The trip was alright, and I brought back some of the overly sweet candies you like.” Lena chuckled at Kara’s excited gasp. “But I don’t want to talk about Jack right now.”
Kara furrowed her brow, confused. Prince Jack had been Lena’s close friend for years, well as close as you could be when you lived a kingdom away. Had something happened between them?
“Oh, alright.” Kara decided not to press the issue for the time being, knowing Lena would eventually talk to her about it if something had indeed happened. “We can talk about whatever you like, or we can play some Alquerque if you feel up for it. I’ve been practicing in your absence and I beat Alex yesterday!” She boasted, quite proud of herself even though they both knew her sister had just started playing that particular board game.
“That’s not a bad idea, Kara—But…” the brunette trailed off, seemingly unsure of how to continue. “Something’s been on my mind for months now,” she began. Kara wondered what could possibly having been troubling Lena for that long without the princess mentioning it to her best friend, her confidante. “This trip—Kara, this trip helped me realize just how important you are to me.” She confessed, unwavering green eyes staring into her friend’s blue ones.
“Lena, your friendship means the world to me—” Kara attempted to say, still not sure if she needed to reassure the brunette.
“I’m not just talking about friendship.” Lena interrupted, finally letting go of one of Kara’s hands to move a lock of hair behind her ear. Meanwhile the blonde simply observed her movement, briefly getting lost in how beautiful the other girl was. “I guess what I’m trying to say is—I—I feel so close to you, Kara. In many ways. You’re my best friend, but it’s more than that,” her voice wavered, “I’ve never felt this way about any of my friends before. Nobody has ever treated me like you do Kar.”
Kara smiled warmly as Lena peered into her eyes, trying to put her at ease while also struggling to keep her feelings under control. She couldn’t get too excited. She couldn’t get ahead of herself.
“You’re always there for me Kara, but what I truly appreciate about you is your honesty.” Lena continued, looking more confident as the focus shifted from her feelings to what she loved about her best friend. “Do you remember when I played Mill with Lady Janet and Lady Krea a few days before I left?” Kara nodded, prompting her to go on, “Well it turns out we were playing by the wrong rules just because I thought I remembered them right and no one dared to contradict me! My own childhood friends!” Lena cried out, “My point is, nobody except you and my father dare tell me when I’m wrong. And that’s just one of the things I love about you, Kara.”
The blonde let a small smile bloom on her face, happy to get confirmation Lena considered her an honest friend. She had no idea what being a princess felt like, but she knew there were lots of people ready to worship the ground Lena walked on just to get something from her in the end.
“Being without you, even if it was only for a week, gave me a lot of time to think about us.” Lena paused to take a deep breath, searching for the right words to convey what was on her mind. Kara still had no idea where this was going. She didn’t dare get her hopes up. “You’re special to me, Kara. You’re precious, and the most loyal and kind-hearted person I know. Now,” Lena gave Kara’s hand a squeeze, almost as if to get courage from it, “I don’t want what I’m about to say to scare you off…”
Was this happening? Was Lena heading to where Kara thought she was? Could a royal princess be in love with the baker’s daughter?
Kara suddenly felt the need to say something to reassure Lena, “It won’t. You won’t ever lose me, Lee.” She tightened her hold on Lena’s hand, trying to convey through actions the message she had just expressed through words.
Lena nodded in response, eyes flickering towards their locked hands before making their way back up to Kara’s face. “This doesn’t need to change anything between us—if… if you don’t… feel the same way, I mean. What I’m trying to say is, I’m in love with you, Kara.” She breathed out, speaking so low Kara wasn’t even sure she had heard correctly.
There was no mistaking the look in Lena’s bright green eyes though. Eyes that were now glistening with unshed tears, eyes that were conveying such a loving look Kara wondered how she’d been able to miss it before. A look the blonde was sure was written all over her own face.
Kara must have been silent for longer than she thought because soon Lena was pulling her hand away, a worried look crossing her features. “Please, say something,” she pleaded, afraid she had ruined their two-years long friendship in the span of a few minutes.
“Lena I—” the blonde stammered, still trying to get a hold of her racing thoughts long enough to complete a full sentence. “I can’t believe this, Lena...” As she saw the look of horror that was starting to show on the princess’ face, she hurried to articulate, “I’m in love with you too! I’ve been in love with you since the moment we became friends, but I never would have thought you could possibly feel the same way.”
Relief washed over Lena, glad she had decided to speak up. “Really? Why didn’t you say something sooner?”
Kara hesitantly shifted her eyes to the ground, knowing exactly why she had decided to keep her feelings a secret. “Lee, I didn’t think this,” she motioned between the two of them, “would be how it would turn out. I dreamt about this, fantasized about it, but I was never able to work up the courage to actually come out with my feelings.” The blonde sighed. She didn’t really want to put a damper on their moment, but she also knew Lena needed to hear the truth. “Look at us, Lee. You’re the heir to the throne and, as much as I love you, how could I think you’d reciprocate my feelings? How are we even going to act on them?”
Lena reached a hand up to Kara’s cheek, trailing the back of her fingers along the line of her jawline. “Kara, social status holds no importance for me. Not when it comes to love. Etiquette be damned, Kar. I love you, and if you want to be with me, then I’m willing to try this with you. No matter if I’ll be queen one day.”
Tears gathered in Kara’s eyes. She was still trying to wrap her mind around what was happening. This, Lena confessing her love, it was a dream come true. “I want you, Lee. I want to be with you and love you, but your father will never approve, his advisors won’t approve.”
“Kara, I’m ready to stop worrying and thinking about the what ifs, at least for the time being.” Lena paused before continuing in a lower, more insecure tone, “I know loving me isn’t going to be easy. I know that our relationship won’t be a normal one, I know we’ll have to hide it from people and, I know this is a lot to ask of you—But…Are you willing to try it with me?”
The frail and unsure sound of Lena’s voice made Kara’s heart clench. She needed the princess to know she had just made Kara the happiest girl on the planet, and that she was absolutely thrilled to have a romantic relationship with her.
“Lena, I’d go to the edge of the world if you asked me to. I’d go through the underworld for you. Having the chance to love you—romantically— is the best thing that could have ever happened to me, even if we’ll need to keep it a secret. As long as you’re happy Lee, I’m happy.” The blonde watched Lena smile her brightest smile, green eyes shining more than ever. There was only one thing left to ask, “May I kiss you, Lena?”
Kara didn’t have to wait long for an answer. “Please.”
4th Scene: 6 years earlier
If Kara Danvers had to describe how her life was going at the moment, she’d say she was as happy as she could be. Sure, she had to work hard to help her family and her free time was limited, but she was surrounded by people who loved her. And she loved them back fully.
But there was more. On the day of her 18th birthday, she had admitted to herself she was in love with Lena Luthor, her girlfriend of a year, and the girl who had stolen her heart completely.
Their relationship hadn’t been easy. While all relationships required effort, theirs was complicated by the fact that one of them was a mere commoner and the other the heir to the kingdom. Kara often found herself wondering if if she was being foolish, if them being together made any sense. Lena was bound to marry royalty sooner or later. Most likely some prince who would sweep her off her feet, shower her with expensive jewels, silks, and all sorts of luxuries. While Kara knew this, she still couldn’t bring herself to give up her princess until she was forced to.
Thinking about their inevitable fate was painful; loosing Lena would be devastating—stop. She couldn’t, no, she wouldn’t let these intrusive thoughts distract her from her current happiness. She needs to focus on the here and now, on what she has rather than what she may lose.
She was happy to see Lena every time her busy life as a princess allowed her to, and she was content to share simple pleasures with her. They’d know each other for three years now, but it was this last year that their relationship had fundamentally changed, that they evolved from friends to lovers. Not only was Lena Kara’s best friend, she’s the love of her life/soulmate. She now knew the most secret parts of the Princess, her worries, her dreams, her plans for the kingdom, what made her smile and what made her upset. She could kiss her and hold her tight, hold her hand and caress her cheek—if there was no one else around the witness it.
Only two souls knew about Kara and Lena’s illicit affair.
The first was Alex. Her sister could always tell when the blonde was trying to hide something, and she’d managed to figure it out in less than a month. The blue-eyed girl figured some of it was also her own fault – she’d never been a good liar, and there were only so many nightly visits to the castle she could sneak in before suspicion arose in Alex.
When her sister had confronted her about it, Kara had decided it was no use to keep lying – plus, she was 100% sure Alex would take her secret to her grave.
When Kara came clean and told Alex the truth, her sister had laughed in disbelief. But as she explained how the princess had been the one to approach Kara, the red-haired girl had immediately settled, then reminded Kara that she’d been right all along.
The younger girl was glad she no longer had to lie to her sister about why she was sneaking out of their room at night and where she’d been spending all her free time. And of course, Alex was also a great source of much needed support when she was having doubts about her and Lena’s future together.
The second person to be let in on their secret was Dame Samantha Arias, Lena’s personal guard and the head of the royal knights tasked with the princess’ safety and protection. Sam, only a few years older than Lena, was the brunette’s only true friend before Kara came along but, due to her job, she often had to abide by the king’s rules rather than Lena’s. In any case, Lena trusted Sam as much as Kara trusted Alex, which was fortunate since Sam made it extremely easy for Kara to reach the princess’ chambers unbothered.
Why, just yesterday, the day of her 18th birthday, Sam had stopped by the Danvers’ bakery requesting an immediate delivery of sweet tarts to the Princess. Reading between the lines, Kara knew that Lena had something more in mind. Alex’s smirk at Sam had only been confirmation. It turned out to be the most amazing birthday she’d ever had. Not because she hadn’t had special birthdays before, but because the brunette had confessed to being in love with her, Kara, a baker’s daughter.
In that perfect moment, nestled close together on a hill overlooking the capital, surrounded by Kara’s favorite foods and sipping sweet red wine, Kara had felt completely at ease. Like they were just Kara and Lena, no expectations needed. When the princess had then uttered those three simple words. When the princess had looked deeply into her eyes and uttered those three simple words, Kara had decided then and there that she’d no longer hold back in fear of what ifs. With eyes full of tears, she’d showered Lena with kisses, absolutely bursting with love.
Now, when worries of the future plague her, Kara thinks back to that moment on the hill and remembers the sheer happiness she’d felt when Lena had whispered in her ear, “I love you.”
5th SCENE: 5 years earlier
The first time King Lionel Luthor coughed up blood was about a month after Kara and Lena’s two-years anniversary. From then on, his symptoms only became worse, including a severe cough and constant fevers and headaches.
The best physicians in the kingdom where all secretly called to the court in hopes of getting the most accurate diagnosis possible.
Based on his symptoms, they all agreed on one unfortunate illness: pneumonia. However, though his health was slowly declining, the king was determined not to show that to his people.
Kara was one of few to know only because Lena let her in on the secret shortly after it became clear her father wasn’t going to get any better. Also, the blonde could read Lena like a book, therefore, she had noticed that her girlfriend wasn’t behaving quite like herself. As days passed, she noticed the presence of a persistent frown and furrowed brow adorning the princess’ face. Eventually, Kara decided to confront Lena about what was bothering her.
The princess had tried to deflect the question but, seeing as Kara could read right through her, the brunette had realized that talking to her about it wouldn’t do any harm. Especially since the blonde had been her closest confidante for four years. Lena had always found solace in her lover, even though opening up was hard for her.
That night, when Kara followed Sam to the princess’ chambers, she found Lena in a morose state. Without having to say anything, Kara knew immediately that King Lionel’s health must have worsened.
“Oh Lena.”
The princess was sitting at her desk when Kara entered the room. She had a book open on her lap, but it looked untouched. At the sound of Kara’s voice, Lena raised her head, meeting her girlfriend’s worried blue eyes with her teary green ones.
“Kara…” The blonde’s heart clenched at the way Lena’s voice wavered. She was used to her sounding confident and self-assured, never this shy and insecure.
“Lee, what happened? Are you alright?” Kara rushed to her side. She placed a hand on her shoulder, close to the base of her neck so that her thumb could lightly caress her soft skin. “Is it your father?”
Lena nodded weakly, a fresh wave of tears making its way to her eyes. “It’s worsening Kara. He was so weak today; he was forced to dismiss the council early.”
“I’m so sorry Lee. I know how much he means to you.” Kara was no stranger to loss. She knew exactly what her girlfriend was going through, just as she knew the months to come weren’t going to be easy. She just wanted Lena to know she could count on her, that she’d always be there for her. Kneeling down in front of Lena’s chair, Kara took Lena’s pale hands into her own and said, “I’m here for you Lee, you know that. For whatever you need.”
“I’m so scared, Kar. The way my father’s advisors look to me, it’s like he’s already dead,” Lena explained in a thin voice. “The physician said he only has a couple more months. I know what they expect of me now,” she whispered out, tears finally falling down her cheeks. “It’s too soon, Kara. I’m not ready to be queen. I just want my father to heal, and I feel so stupid talking to you about this when you’ve already had your share of loss. I—”
“Hey, hey, hey. Lena, look at me.” Kara stopped her immediately. She didn’t want Lena to think even for a moment she couldn’t talk to her about her father’s condition. Especially not for that reason. “You can talk to me about anything. King Lionel is your father; you love him. It’s only natural for you to talk about him.” When Lena met her intense gaze, Kara continued: “It’s horrible that this is happening Lee, I really wish you didn’t have to go through this. Nothing I can say is going to make the situation better, but what I can tell you to do is try to spend as much time as you can with him Lee. Don’t waste even a moment. Talk to him, spend time with him. Treasure the wonderful memories you already have. I know that seeing him like this can’t be easy for you, but more than anything else right now, he needs to have his loved ones by his side. And I’m sure there’s no one he loves more than you. He’s going to need his loved ones by his side, and I’m sure there’s nobody he loves more than you.”
That night, they went to bed wrapped in each other’s arms. Lena felt almost at peace as she was lulled to sleep by Kara whispering sweet reassuring words in her ear. In that moment, the princess thought once again that, if the blonde would have her, she’d never let Kara go.
If only we had a say in our fate.
As Kara had expected, the weeks following their talk were difficult ones. As King Lionel became more and more weak, the news of his deteriorating health was spreading fast. Lena had been approached by every advisor, minister, council member, and ambassador, each one of them requesting an aside. All was done in good faith. They were all trying to inform her as best as they could on the kingdom’s affairs. They hadn’t anticipated their King needing to give up his throne so soon.
Obviously, that meant Kara could barely see her during those weeks. She was sad, yes, but she also understood these matters were bigger than her, and that Lena’s presence was needed elsewhere. As painful as it was to be separated from her, the blonde would wait a lifetime only to spend a moment with her at the end.
Besides, Kara knew that eventually Lena’s responsibilities would grow, and their time together would be greatly reduced. All that mattered was that Lena knew she could always count on her for support. She couldn’t help but worry for her lover though. The few times Sam had managed to sneak her into the castle, she’d found the princess incredibly pale, with deep shadows under her eyes. She knew Lena must have been overworking herself and failing to get enough food or rest.
To make matters worse, the one time Kara had brought up her concerns over Lena’s self-care, the princess had brushed her off arguing that there was no time to think about food when the future of the kingdom rested on her shoulders.
Even though Kara knew what she said was true, it still hurt to watch Lena close herself off more and more from her. She decided to not press the issue, knowing it’d only make the situation worse. Still, she couldn’t help but worry about their future as a couple, especially since Lena hadn’t sent Sam to fetch her for almost two weeks.
When she was finally able to see her again, Lena had apologized. She had explained to Kara how much stress she was under and promised she’d take better care of herself.
On the day King Lionel Luthor died, the whole kingdom seemed to stop. He had been a kind and merciful ruler, and under his reign the people had flourished. While Kara was sure that Lena would rule just as well, if not better than her father, many people were still concerned by the soon-to-be queen’s young age.
Once Kara heard the sad news, she was sure that Lena would send for her. She waited all day in the bakery, but as night fell it became clear that Sam wouldn’t be coming to fetch her. As the night fell, it soon became clear Sam wasn’t coming. Again, as much as it hurt, Kara accepted that Lena probably needed time to herself.
In the days following his death, the kingdom mourned the passing of their King. In a month’s time Lena would be crowned Queen. Kara worried about her lover’s emotional state. Knowing Lena better than anyone, she was sure that the brunette had resigned herself to not showing any signs of weakness. This was a trait she’d surely inherited from her father.
On the fourth day after Lionel’s death, while returning from a delivery, she saw Sam’s horse waiting outside the bakery. Approaching the shop, she hoped this meant that things were finally starting to get better.
Two weeks later, Lena’s coronation day was a huge affair. The city was buzzing with excitement, visitors from all over the kingdom were flooding the streets, and nearly every house had hung the standard depicting the black and purple owl symbolizing the House of Luthor. Iris, clemantis, dhalias, tulips, flowers of all kinds and colors were adorning the windows. Double the guards were securing the city, and the festive atmosphere was almost palpable. Kara had never seen so many decorations, but, given the importance of the ceremony, it couldn’t be otherwise.
The last time the blonde had seen Lena was the week prior to the coronation, and the soon to be queen had only been able to spare a couple of hours before she was called back by her ministers to go over some urgent affairs. Kara didn’t blame her though, she couldn’t imagine the kind of pressure that was put on Lena’s shoulders so suddenly. The young woman guessed that was why the soon to be queen had been so bitter lately, even with her. For what Kara remembered, Lena had been so stressed only a handful of times before, and never for reasons this important. Kara could only hope the ceremony wouldn’t take too much of Lena’s energy since she was going to need it in the days to come.
Although the blonde was one of the most important people in Lena’s life, Kara knew she probably wouldn’t see much of her during the day. The coronation was going to take place in the main square, where a temporary stage had been set up, but only the nobles and the knights would be able to see the queen up close. The rest of the population could only settle at the back of the square and hope to catch a glimpse of the ceremony.
That was currently she and Alex were, waiting for the coronation to begin. They had left their home hours in advance in hopes of finding a good spot before the square became too crowded to move. As they waited, watching noble after noble arrive, she wondered if she’d have the chance to see Lena once the feast ended. Of course, she wouldn’t blame Lena if she ended up too tired to call her to her quarters, but she also didn’t find it fair that some random noble whom Lena barely knew was allowed to witness one of the most important days of her life more closely that she was.
As she was glaring at the back of a fat noble trying to sit in a chair too small for him and make a fuss about it, the sound of the castle bells began to be heard, signaling the beginning of the ceremony. Kara held her breath as the High Priest made its way to the middle of the stage followed by the four main advisors, and the ministers, all of which took their rightful place in the back.
After a moment of complete silence, the High Priest motioned for the crowd to rise as they waited for Lena to make her entrance. Kara’s heart was pounding in her chest as she leaned on Alex’s shoulder in hopes of getting a better view of the stage now that everybody was standing.
When the royal drums began to sound, Kara knew the moment had finally come.
The blonde’s position wasn’t ideal but, from what she could see, Lena had never looked more beautiful. She was wearing a long, purple dress and her hair was styled at the top of her head, only letting a few long curls run down her neck and her back. It was hard to make out any more details, but Kara was sure she was never going to forget this moment. Lena, followed closely by Sam, who was wearing the ceremonial armor, waved at the people, a small smile gracing her face.
The crowd, Kara included, cheered and clapped, welcoming Lena on the stage as she made her way to the High Priest. Once she had reached her place, the priest quickly called everybody back to silence and started the ceremony.
5th scene part 2
Two weeks later, Lena’s coronation day was a huge affair. The city was buzzing with excitement; visitors from all over the kingdom were flooding the streets, and nearly every house had hung the standard flag depicting the black and purple owl symbolizing the House of Luthor. Adorning windows were flowers of all sorts, including Iris, Clematis, Dahlia, and Tulip. Double the guards were securing the city, and the festive atmosphere was almost palpable. Kara had never seen so many decorations, but given the importance of the ceremony it made sense.
The last time the blonde had seen Lena was the week prior the coronation. The soon-to-be queen had only been able to spare a couple hours of her time before she was called back by her advisors regarding urgent affairs. Kara was sympathetic for Lena’s situation. She couldn’t imagine the kind of pressure she was under, and so suddenly. She guessed that’s why the soon-to-be queen had seemed so irritable lately, even with her. Since Kara had known her, she’d only seen Lena this stressed a handful of times. She could only hope the ceremony wouldn’t take too much of Lena’s energy since she was going to need it in the days to come.
Although the blonde was one of the most important people in Lena’s life, Kara knew she probably wouldn’t see much of her much of her the day of the coronation. It was going to take place in the main square upon a stage that had been setup there. All the nobles and knights would be seated directly in front of it while the general population would be settled behind them towards the far back of the square.
From that distance, an observer could only see but a glimpse of the ceremony. Currently, Alex and her were standing at this distance, waiting for the coronation to begin. They’d left their home hours in advance in hopes of finding a good spot before the square became too crowded to move. As they waited, watching noble after noble arrive, Kara wondered if she’d have the chance to see Lena after the feast following the ceremony. Of course, she wouldn’t blame Lena if she was too tired to call on her. What bothered her was the thought of some random noble Lena barely knew getting to witness up close one of the most important days of her life while she was stuck back there.
She realized that she’d been glaring at said nobles when the sound of castle bells began to ring, signaling the start of the event. Kara held her breath as the High Priest made his way to the middle of the stage followed by the four main advisors, and the ministers, all of whom took their rightful place.
After a moment of complete silence, the High Priest motioned for the crowd to rise in anticipation of Lena’s arrival. Kara’s heart was pounding in her chest as she leaned on Alex’s shoulder in hopes of getting a better view of the stage now that everybody was standing.
When the royal drums began to sound, Kara knew the moment had finally come.
Even from her distant position, she could see that Lena appeared more beautiful than ever. She was wearing a long, purple dress and her hair was styled at the top of her head, only letting a few long curls run down her neck and her back. It was hard to make out any more details, but Kara was sure she was never going to forget this moment. Lena crossed the stage, followed by Sam in the traditional ceremonial armor. She waved at the crowd, a small smile gracing her face.
Everyone, Kara included, cheered and clapped, welcoming Lena as she made her way to the High Priest. Once she had reached her place, the priest commanded silence to begin the ceremony
Later that night, Kara and Alex were cleaning the shop’s kitchen, preparing for the following day. The ceremony had taken about an hour, with the High Priest leading Lena through the royal promises and vows, then placing the ceremonial crown on top of her head and proclaiming her as queen. Through it all Kara was overwhelmed with emotion, bursting with happiness for Lena. Their kingdom was about to begin a period of wealth and prosperity like never before.
“What are you thinking about?”
Kara raised her head to look at Alex from across the table, “The ceremony.”
“It was incredible, wasn’t it? Sam looked so good in that armor.” Kara let out a small laugh at Alex’s comment, “And Lena too, of course… Are you going to see her tonight?”
Kara looked back down at the rag she was holding, starting to clean the table once again. “I’m not sure. The royal feast is probably still going on and I’m sure she has a lot of boring nobles to talk to.”
Sensing her sister’s unease, Alex nodded. “I’m sure she’ll make some time for you, Kar.”
“I don’t know, Alex.” She sighed, “It’s been a rough couple of months, and everyone is breathing down her neck. I’d understand if she had to put off our time together for a few more days.”
“Kara, you don’t need to be like this all the time,” reprimanded Alex. “You’ve been very patient and kind with her, but you need to think about your feelings too.”
“Alex, she’s the queen. I can’t just barge into her quarters and ask for some us time when when she barely has any for herself.” Kara huffed, not really wanting to have this kind of conversation. Turning around, she proceeded to scrub Eliza’s counter.
“I know that Kara but listen, what I’m saying is, just try to talk to her about it. Without pressuring her or anything. Just make your feelings known Kar, the good and the bad ones.”
After that, the sisters continued to clean in silence. Deep down, Kara knew Alex was right, that she needed Lena to know the past few months had been hard on her as well. That’s what Lena would want anyway--for Kara to be completely honest with her. She was just afraid, maybe irrationally so, that by pushing her feelings onto Lena she’d create an even bigger distance between them.
As if on cue, just as they were finishing the last chores, Sam’s voice came from the outside. Sending a quick glance in Alex’s direction and receiving a small nod and an encouraging smile, Kara rushed into the street.
“Tell Sam to come back here afterwards!”, Alex yelled after her sister.
As expected, the knight was waiting for her with a spare horse, ready to escort her to the Queen’s chambers.
“Hi Sam!” she greeted the tall brunette with a huge smile. “How was the feast? How is Lena?” she took the reins Sam was handing her and proceeded to quickly mount on her horse.
Sam smiled at her eagerness. “She’s fine Kara. She’s actually been talking about you all day. Well, to me at least,” she said with a soft laugh and playful roll of her eyes. Kara’s heart jumped at the thought that Lena was missing her and thinking about her on such a busy and important day. “The feast is still going on at the castle, but the queen took an early leave to spend time with somebody else,” she winked. “Also, I hope you still have some appetite left. I heard there’s going to be some food just for you.”
“Oh, Sam. You know my appetite never ends.”
When the castle came into view, Sam led her to a side entrance which was conveniently unguarded, and then accompanied her all the way to the royal chambers. Once they were standing outside the door, Kara suddenly pulled Sam into a bone-crushing hug.
“Thank you, Sam. Really, none of this would be possible without you.” Kara mumbled into Sam’s hair, truly feeling grateful for this amazing knight.
Sam returned the hug, “Don’t mention it, Kara. You have no idea how happy you make Lena, and she deserves the best. And thanks to you I met your sister.”
The blonde pulled back with a laugh, “Yeah, about my sister, she’s waiting for you back at the shop.”
Sam’s chocolate eyes lit up, “In that case, I’ll head back now! You go on now. I’m sure you and Lena both need as much alone time as you can get.”
With that, Sam waved before turning around and making her way back down the long hallway. Before entering the queen’s chambers, Kara took in the state of her clothes, cursing her flour-stained pants and trying to rub away as much as she could without making an even bigger mess. She really should have thought about changing first.
Not willing to waste any more time, Kara knocked four times on Lena’s door, knowing the brunette would recognize their signal right away. Indeed, a moment later the queen’s soft voice invited her to come in.
Opening the door, Kara was met with the beautiful sight of Lena standing in front of a large window, her back facing her. When she turned around, Kara felt her heart skip a beat at her beauty. No matter how many years they spent together, every time she saw the queen she never failed to be in awe at her very presence.
The brunette was no longer wearing the ceremonial outfit she had worn during the coronation. Now, she wore a simple night gown which left little to Kara’s imagination.
“Kara!” Lena’s voice wavered as she said her name, emotion heavy in her tone.
The queen hurried towards Kara, enveloping her in a warm hug. One hand placed firmly to her lower back while to other found its rightful place tangled in her girlfriend’s blonde locks.
“Lee…You don’t know how much I’ve missed you.” Kara whispered near her ear, turning her head to plant a light kiss on the side of her head. “You were amazing today; I was so proud.” She reluctantly pulled back while keeping hold of Lena’s waist. “How are you feeling?”
Lena softly trailed her hands up Kara’s arms, grazing her neck and finally cupping her cheeks. Her green eyes stared deep into Kara’s. “I’m feeling great now that you’re here, Kar.”
The newly appointed queen stood on the tips of her toes and gently pulled Kara’s head down towards her. When their lips were less than an inch apart, Kara closed the distance, losing herself in the taste of Lena’s lips.
The kiss was soft and eager at the same time. It had been days since since she’d kissed Lena and she was determined to savor every second of it. She had no way of knowing when she’d see the queen again, and every moment spent with her was worth the world to Kara.
When they broke apart, both panting for air, the brunette leaned her forehead on Kara’s, enjoying this moment with her.
“My Queen.” Kara whispered before planting a quick kiss on Lena’s lips. “I’m so proud of you.”
“Kara…”
“No, really.” The older woman moved her hands from Lena’s waist to tightly grasp her hands with her own, “You’ve been through so much. Everybody is putting so much pressure on you, yet here you are already making meaningful change and improving the lives of your people.”
What Kara was saying was true. Lena was already taking steps to change the taxing system, making it more just and fairer in hopes of improving the life of the peasants. Moreover, she was also trying to add more patrols near the northern border, where bandits had been plaguing the area for years. All of this in less than a month, plus all the ordinary duties, council meetings and hearings required of a ruler.
“Darling I—”
“Wait, Lee. Before you say anything, I just wanted to say that you’re going to be such an amazing queen, the best this kingdom has ever seen. I love you so much Lena, everything you are and everything you stand for.” Kara noticed Lena’s eyes watering as she spoke, and she hurried to cup her cheek with her right hand, “I still can’t believe I’m lucky enough to have you in my life.”
Lena opened her mouth as if to as if to speak. Instead, what came out was a sob, tears falling from her eyes. Kara was instantly worried. Had something bad happened? She couldn’t explain the change in Lena’s mood.
“What’s wrong, my love?” she asked, attempting to meet Lena’s gaze. The brunette seemed to be avoiding eye contact.
Wiping the tears from her face, she murmured, “I—I’m sorry Kara. Nothing’s wrong, I’m just—I’m feeling very emotional right now. What you… What you just said… I’m not all that perfect Kara.” Pausing, she slid her hand down Kara’s arm, “I know that things between us have been somewhat tense lately. And it’s my fault. You’ve been so perfect, so patient. And I’ve been so absent. I took my frustrations out on you, even though you’ve been nothing but kind to me.” Taking a deep breath, she looked into Kara’s blue eyes, “What I’m trying to say is… I’m sorry Kara. I’ve been horrible to you these past few months.”
“Oh.” Kara hadn’t been expecting Lena to apologize to her. Sure, what she had just admitted was true, but Kara didn’t think she owed her an apology over it. She knew why Lena had behaved like that. Still, she had to admit, it was nice to hear the apology—to know that Lena was aware of how her actions were affecting Kara.
Lena’s brow furrowed while Kara was lost in thought. Realizing she needed to articulate herself, Kara quickly replied, “First of all, you were not horrible. You could never be horrible to me, or to anyone for that matter. Yes, these past few months have been difficult, and yes, I missed you every day…but Lena, you were mourning. And instead of having that time for yourself, you had to take on new responsibilities. While I wanted more than anything to be there for you, to be close to you, I knew I couldn’t.” Lowering her gaze to the floor, Kara was reminded of that painful reality.
“No. Things won’t be like this anymore.” This time, Lena spoke with confidence. Her hands reached for Kara, pulling her towards the bed and sitting themselves besides each other. “I love you Kara, and I haven’t treated you fairly. I can never forgive myself for how badly I handled our relationship lately, but it stops now. From this moment on, things are going to change and, if you agree, I plan on spending much more time together. I’m the queen now and I’ve decided that I want to see you, be with you every night. Is that something you’d like as well?”
Kara couldn’t believe what she was hearing. Spending more time with Lena? Seeing Lena every night? Even if that probably meant a lot less sleep for Kara, she wouldn’t pass up this chance for anything in the world.
“That’s all I have ever wanted.” Kara leaned in to seal this new, wonderful step in their life with a kiss.
6th SCENE: The night before
If Kara was asked to describe the last five years with just one word, she’d say they were perfect. Since Lena had taken her rightful place on the throne, the kingdom had been absolutely flourishing. Trades with the neighboring realms were at an all-time high, food was abundant in most homes, and the commoners’ quality of life had improved thanks to the changes Lena made to the taxation system. Their roads were safer to travel on; though bandits still occasionally attacked merchant travelers, the soldiers had been doing their best to apprehend the outlaws.
As Kara had always known, Lena turned out to be a just ruler, an intelligent queen who knew how to use her power for the good of her people, as well as when to wield it for their protection.
Ever since she became the queen, Lena had also kept her promise to Kara. Every day, or at worst every two days, she’d find time in her busy schedule for being with Kara. Most of the time they had the evening to themselves, which they spent having dessert together, talking, reading, and just being with each other. Often, Kara found herself spending the night in the queen’s quarters. Even though she had to get up before sunrise to make it back to the bakery in time for work, it was worth it. There was nothing she cherished more than falling asleep with Lena wrapped tight in her arms.
So yes, life was perfect. Well, until Lena’s advisors began to pressure her into marriage. In their opinion, at the age of 24, it was about time for Lena to find a suitable wife or husband. Be it a king, a queen, a high nobleman or noblewoman, finding a partner for Lena to marry seemed to be the only thing on the council’s mind. No matter how many times the queen herself turned down their suggestions, or even the marriage proposals from rich and noble suitors, the advisors wouldn’t let up on the topic.
The situation was incredibly stressful for Lena; she couldn’t exactly tell them the true reasons behind her reluctance to marriage.
And as for Kara, she’d always know that this day would come. She knows that Lena loves her, is in love with her, but what did that mean in the grand scheme of things?
So, when Lena burst into her quarters one evening looking distraught, Kara knew their bond was strong.
For that reason, when Lena burst into her quarters one evening looking close to tears, Kara knew the conversation that was about to come wouldn’t be an easy one.
“My love, are you alright?” Judging by her morose expression and ragged breaths, it was obvious that something was wrong, but the question spilled out of Kara’s lips anyway. It was pretty clear Lena wasn’t alright, but the question spilled automatically out of Kara’s lips.
The blonde approached the queen taking long strides and pulled Lena into her arms as soon as she was close enough.
“Kara, I—It’s been a rough day,” she started in a shaky voice, looking up at the blonde with big, loving eyes. “I’m so glad you’re here.”
“I’m always here for you, Lee.” Leaning down, she pressed a soft kiss to the crown of Lena’s head, trying to convey her message with actions as well as with words. “Do you want to talk about it?”
Lena took a small step back from Kara but kept her hands on the blonde’s waist. For a moment, she seemed to contemplate her reply, but then she decided to be open with her lover. “It’s my advisors. They just can’t drop the marriage topic, no matter how many times I turn them down.” She sighed, frustration clear in her voice.
“Lee—”
“I don’t want a marriage of convenience, Kara.” Lena interrupted, “I don’t need it. I already have everything I want right now,” she gestured with her left hand around the room. “The kingdom is doing great, the people are happy, I have you…” she trailed off for a moment, “I’m tired of everyone always expecting more from me.”
Releasing Kara, she began to pace back and forth. “Do you know what Lord Ailwin said to me today?” she asked, referring to one of her closest advisors. He’d also server under King Lionel and Lena greatly respected his advice. “He said that if I was to wait any longer, I’ll become too old to produce an heir.” Throwing her hands in the air, she hissed, “An heir!”
She was silent for a moment, before she continued in a softer tone, “I don’t want an heir, Kara. If the time ever comes, I would like to have a child, one born out of love and not necessity.” Her voice had become low and almost fragile.
Kara’s heart pounded in her chest. Although the possibility of having children with Lena had never seemed like a reality, the blonde had often found herself fantasizing about it. Hearing these words coming out of Lena’s mouth in a moment of vulnerability almost sent her mind spiraling. However, she needed to stay grounded. Lena needed her, and Kara was going to provide all the support she could.
Taking a few, careful steps towards her lover, Kara positioned herself behind Lena, hands sneaking around her waist to hold her queen from behind. The blonde pressed a kiss to her head, taking in her sweet scent.
“You’re not alone, Lee,” she murmured. “I know your advisors are putting a lot of pressure on you, and I know this is a sensitive topic…” she paused to briefly tighten her hold on her lover’s waist, “But I want you to remember I’ll always stand by your side, no matter what you decide.”
Slowly, Lena turned around in her arms, a small frown still on her face. “Kara… There’s something I’ve been thinking about.” The older woman tilted her head to the side, curious about what was on Lena’s mind. When the brunette seemed uncertain on how to continue, Kara gave her an encouraging nod. “You make me so happy, Kar. You make me a better person. And every day with you by my side feels like a priceless gift.”
When Lena paused once again, worrying her lower lip between her teeth in a sign of distress, Kara knew there had to be a ‘but’ coming. What was Lena trying to say?
“But—” there it was, “I—You—Kara, are you sure about this?” the blonde furrowed her brow and was about to ask Lena to elaborate when the queen began speaking again, “I mean… Our relationship is the most precious thing I’ve ever had, but sometimes I wonder if it’s fair to you.”
Kara was stunned for a moment, especially when her lover averted her eyes, casting her gaze anywhere but at the other woman. “Lena, I love you… Where is this coming from? I wouldn’t change you for the world, you know that,” she hurried out, not liking where this conversation was going at all.
Kara watched Lena fidget with her fingers, a clear sign this had been bothering her for some time.
“I—I know that. And you know the feeling is mutual, but—but what if some day you…you regret it?” she stuttered out. “What if a few years from now you regret choosing to be with me?”
Kara was stunned for a few seconds. How long had this been on Lena’s mind exactly?
“Lena, I could never—”
“Kara” she interrupted her, a hand coming to grasp Kara’s own. “You deserve someone who is able to commit to you fully. Someone you can have a family with.” She finally looked into the blonde’s blue eyes, “I love you with all my heart, but I could never forgive myself if you ever came to resent me for taking away your chance at having a family.”
Tears began to fall down Kara’s cheeks, mirroring Lena’s own sorrow. She couldn’t believe what she was hearing. How could Lena think she’d ever want to start a family with anyone but her?
Lena suddenly let go of her hand, moving to turn towards the window once more but Kara didn’t let her. The blonde reached out and gently pulled her back into her arms.
“Listen to me, Lena,” she started. “You are the love of my life. I know our situation is difficult; I know you have a million other problems to think about and a kingdom to run, but I wouldn’t have it any other way,” she resolutely stated, making sure to keep her blue gaze fixed on Lena. “Yes, sometimes I like to dream about a life where it could be just us, but…our relationship… I wouldn’t change it. I don’t want to have a family with anyone else. I choose to have you in my life, I choose you every day. What we have now, though it’s not ideal, it’s perfect to me.”
She paused to let to let her declaration sink in. A single tear made its way down Lena’s cheek. “If you don’t believe me now, then I swear I’ll spend the rest of my life proving it to you.”
When a small, timid smile appeared on Lena’s lips, Kara hoped her words had managed to assuage Lena’s worries, at least for the moment. Thinking about the future, the blonde knew her actions would arrive where her words couldn’t.
When they went to sleep that night, cuddling in each other’s arms and exchanging soft kisses, a plan started to form in Kara’s mind. After what had happened tonight, she knew it was finally time her mother’s ring found its rightful place with the person her heart belonged to.
Tomorrow, after the queen’s usual council meeting, she’d get Sam to bring Lena to their spot on the hill. Tomorrow, she’d be brave.
7th Scene: Present time
Kara waited with bated breath as she took in her lover’s surprised expression. Apparently, she had rendered her speechless. Lena’s eyes were fixed on the ring she held between them and Kara worried she could hear her own heartbeat in that silence. “Of course, you don’t have to wear it. I know--I know it’s just a simple ring, but it’d still mean a lot to me if you accepted it…if you’d allow me to be by your side for as long as you’d have me,” Kara finished in a trembling finished in a trembling yet hopeful voice. She was eager for an answer.
It seemed like an eternity passed before Lena broke out of her stupor. Clenching her jaw, her lip trembling as tears began to fall, Lena whispered, “Kara, I… I can’t.”
Kara’s stomach dropped.
Was Lena refusing her? Had she overstepped? Was this too much? Was it too soon after their talk the night before?
A million questions were swimming in Kara’s head, as well as an ugly voice saying that it had been a stupid idea. What had she been thinking? Of course, this was too much for Lena! She was the freaking queen!
“I—I—Of course!” she sputtered, hurriedly retreating the hand that was offering the ring. Rising quickly to her feet. “It’s okay. I understand!” She hated the way her voice trembled. It was a broken wretched sound that she couldn’t ever remember making before. “We can just forget this ever happened and enjoy the rest of the wine.” She looked to her side, quickly spotting their glasses and the abandoned bottle. “Do you want some wine? Here.”
Kara made to bend down and grab her glass but soon she felt a soft hand grip her arm, effectively making her freeze in her place. “Kara.”
“I…” she began, not ready to hear what Lena had to say, “I think there are still some raspberry tarts in the basket, I can get get them,” continued Kara, while staring at Lena’s hand on her arm.
She felt like all the rings of unfathomable value adorning the queen’s hand were mocking her. Gems of all colors and shapes, and here she was offering her a mere gold band that wasn’t even perfectly round. Kara closed her fingers around her ring box, ready to slip it back into her pocket. “Or—Or we can head back to the castle. I can—I can walk you to your room. I’m sure you must be tired. I’m sorry I ruined the mood.”
“Kara, stop that.” Lena finally said in a firm voice. “You haven’t ruined anything.”
Kara looked up into Lena’s eyes, her heart clenching at the tears she found there. “B—But you just said you—”
“I know what I said, but please, let me explain,” Lena interrupted. When she realized Kara wasn’t going to say anything else, she began to talk. “I’ve always considered myself a good queen. Everything I do, I do with my people in mind. They’ve always come first, even if it meant I could never have a public relationship with you.”
Kara just looked at her, not knowing where Lena was headed.
“Lately, I’ve had some time to think about what that meant for me. Especially when the whole council kept trying to push suitors onto me. Lena averted her gaze, still holding onto Kara’s arm. “I’ve thought about accepting. I’ve thought about marrying someone for convenience but making it clear I’d still be with you in the meantime. But—I couldn’t help but wonder, is that the person I want to be? Do I want to be a liar for the rest of my life? Do I want to raise my kids with someone I don’t really love? Do I really want my people to believe I’m someone I’m not?”
Lena shook her head, a grimace on her face as if the mere thought of living her life like that disgusted her.
“No. That’s the answer I came to. My people deserve better than that. You deserve better than that. Even I deserve better than that.” Meeting Kara’s teared up eyes, Lena raised her hand to the blonde’s cheek, letting her fingers linger on her soft skin. “I want to be an honest queen, an honest person. Someone my people can relate to, all of them. They need honesty. They need a good role model, someone who’s capable of loving regardless of wealth and title.”
Trailing the back of her hand down Kara’s neck, Lena continued, “That’s why I can’t accept to secretly be your companion. That’s why I can’t keep loving you in secret.” She took a deep breath, knowing her next sentence would most likely change their lives forever. “I want you to be my wife, Kara. Publicly. I want you to rule by my side. I want us to spend the rest of our lives together, with no barriers between us, no secrets.” With a hopeful smile, she asked Kara: “What do you think? Is that something you’d want?” “What do you think? Is that something you’d want?”
For her part, Kara was stunned into silence. She just stood there, blinking, trying to understand if this was all a dream or if Queen Lena Luthor herself, the greatest ruler of her time, had actually asked her to become her wife officially.
“Kara? Say something, please?”
“I—I…are you sure?” she stuttered, still thinking this might be a figment of her imagination.
“More than anything. “I had a long talk with my council today. I told them the truth, that I was deeply in love, have been for the last 5 years, with the baker’s daughter. And that no matter what they thought, I planned to make you my wife. So, will you?”
“YES! A thousand times yes!”
Kara threw her arms around Lena, lifting her up and spinning her around a couple times She was crying tears of joy. Placing the queen back on the ground, Lena wasted no time connecting their lips in a soft kiss.
When they broke apart, Lena smirked at Kara, eyes falling to the blonde’s pocket. “So, where’s my ring?”
Kara blushed, pulling the box out of her pockets and taking the ring between her fingers. “This was my mother’s ring. Before she died, she said one day I’d know who it belonged to. And she was right, I certainly do now.” The blonde took Lena’s left hand in her own, moving to slip the ring onto her ring finger, “Can I?”
“Please do,” Lena whispered, her voice full of emotion.
As Kara lovingly slid the ring onto Lena’s finger, both women noticed a shower of shooting stars lighting up the night sky.
“Make a wish?” Kara asked Lena, arms wrapping around her waist and pulling her close.
Turning towards her lover, Lena replied, “I already have everything I could want and more. My only wish is for it to last forever.”
As Kara stared deeply into her queen’s loving eyes, she found she could only agree.
