Work Text:
Even if the heat helped him to produce his nitroglycerin sweat and fight criminals, Bakugou hated hot days.
And especially this day, because he wanted to blame the blush on his cheeks on the sun but it was because he was watching his best friend's back glistening in the sun while he played volleyball.
Tch, it wasn't fair he looked this good.
Bakugou knew he had a crush on the redhead idiot on their second year of UA but decided to keep his mouth shut as to not ruin the most stable relationship he's ever had.
But, fuck, what if Kirishima didn't like him back?
No, be it he was a coward, but Bakugou didn't want to risk it.
Plus, Bakugou was a fucking pro at hiding his feelings, so he didn't let it get to his head when Kirishima had asked him to live together after graduation. Seeing it more as saving money than Kirishima wanting to be close to the explosive blond.
And because of this contract, two years later, Bakugou is now stuck on a week-long holiday on the beach with the rest of his high school class. He was sure he had paid for his sins by tolerating Pikachu, Soy Sauce, and Racoon Eyes with Jirou (yes, Bakugou respects her because she goes through the same shit as him with the idiots), but apparently, he still had a shit ton of bad karma, because there was no other reason that could explain why he was spending his vacations surrounded by all these extras.
He wanted nothing more than to be in his cool and comfortable room, sleeping and eating to his heart’s content. He wanted to relax, watch a movie, and maybe add a little bit of training to keep his body up. When the group chat he rarely checked started to explode with excitement about the proposition of the trip, he had typed a very polite “Fuck no” and continued to get ready for patrol.
But a certain dumb (cute) redhead had convinced him to come.
"Dude! The fact that everyone's schedules are free that week, means that the stars aligned themselves so we could go and have a good time!"
"You really believe in the stars and shit?" questioned Bakugou.
There a moment of silence where the answer was pretty clear.
"Maybe…,” Kirishima started to fiddle with his fingers, “have you never read your horoscope?"
"No." Bakugou only needed to know that he was an Aries, Kirishima a Libra and that they had great compatibility in every fucking sense. Apart from that reassurance, the future was something he had to make.
"I know you are lying tho. How could you not? But back to the point! The stars are aligned and we have to go!" Then his voice dropped to a whisper, "Also my horoscope may have said that my lucky day was on that same week… but I have a feeling that I won't be so lucky if you aren't there…"
Kirishima looked at him with his signature puppy eyes.
Five days later, Bakugou was enduring the heat under an umbrella in the middle of the beach, his hands changing from his hand fan, a SUPER MEGA iced drink (according to Pikachu), and a book to keep him “entertained”. The heat was so much that he was concentrating on not moving at all. He was wearing swimming trunks, a t-shirt that seemed to be another layer of his skin, a wide brim sun hat (courtesy of Tsuyu), and sunglasses.
The sunscreen he had all over his body made him feel sticky. Bakugou felt that he was only breathing hot air and the cool pack on his nape was doing nothing to save him.
Add sweat to that and he felt like shit.
Add his handsome, sweet, fucking built crush to the mix, and Bakugou felt like he could combust at any moment.
Fucking puppy eyes.
"Do you need more ice? You look sooo red right now" said Todoroki, appearing in front of Bakugou, out of the blue.
The bastard fucking made Bakugou jump in surprise, and the blond noticed that he was still seeing Kirishima's tanned back.
Fuck, he was caught staring at his best friend’s body. The heat must be messing with his self-restraint.
"Your face may very well be a worthy opponent against Kirishima's red hair," Todoroki said calmly, but after years of knowing him, Bakugou knew the bastard was holding a laugh.
"Fuck off."
"You don't want my ice ice baby?"
"Yes, but I don't want to hear you talking."
"Mmmm I'm afraid it comes with the ice, Mr. Dynamighty Blush."
That added more color to his face, but this time it was of rage. Keeping his mouth shut, Bakugou just held out his almost melted SUPER MEGA iced drink, and Todoroki added more ice assuring the blond that he made them extra chill.
"You know? So you can continue to chill."
The fucker was holding another laugh.
Bakugou rolled his eyes behind the sunglasses and raised the glass to his lips. He felt refreshed after a few gulps, feeling like a cold breeze was covering his body. “Thanks” he murmured, “now go back to Deku and stop worrying about me.”
“Mm? Who said I was worried?” asked Todoroki, “I’m just here having fun.”
Bakugou could almost hear the half and half’s ugly laugh but before he could kill the bastard with his eyes, Todoroki was already running towards Deku and Uraraka, who were making the ugliest sandcastle ever and was too close to the waves.
If it weren’t for the sun, I would be building a fucking immense castle and laugh when theirs gets destroyed by the waves. Bakugou smirked to himself, imagining Todoroki comforting a crying Deku.
“You can go build a castle with them, you know?”
Bakugou knew that voice too well. He had heard it in every way possible: groggy with sleep, excited after a workout, or plain tired after patrol. But the pitch or something was always the same, comforting and warm.
But he hated warm right now, and Kirishima had spoken too close to him that Bakugou jumped in surprise once more.
“Oi! Stop that!”
“Stop what?” Kirishima perched an eyebrow in question. Bakugou was about to answer when he noticed the redhead’s trunks hanging low on his hips, showing his Adonis belt and-
“Fucking pick up your shorts!” Bakugou screamed, “And don’t creep up on me, Shitty Hair!”
“Oh shit! Sorry bro, didn’t mean to blind you.” He chuckled as he picked up his trunks. “And please, stop calling me Shitty Hair.”
“Shut up, Stupid Hair.”
Kirishima pouted his lips but Bakugou huffed in annoyance. It was true, Kirishima´s hair wasn’t shitty anymore. After graduating, Kirishima decided to experiment with his hair and ended with an undercut that showed his dark roots so he could show off the puffs of red hair on the top of his head.
Once again, it wasn’t fair that he looked this good.
“Hey,” Kirishima spoke again, “make some space for me, I want to stay in the shade.”
“Fuck no, find your own umbrella.”
“Oh come on, man! Just scoot a little bit. You have a lot of space.”
“Then go to the other side, why do I have to scoot?” Tokoyami was under the shade with Bakugou ever since lunch, but he gave up on the heat when Dark Shadow started a drama about dying in plain daylight. The birdman had excused himself and Bakugou was alone under the umbrella after that.
“Because that’s what our bro code says!”
“We don’t have a bro code!”
“A friend code then.”
“I swear to God, Kirishima. I have been sweating nonstop since we got here and if I so much as move an inch, the towel, umbrella, even your hair will be on fire,” threatened Bakugou, “So just fucking walk to the other side.”
At the risk of losing his hair, Kirishima walked to the other side and laid down, putting his arms behind his head.
“Oh yes,” exhaled Kirishima, closing his eyes, “this is so nice…”
Bakugou looked over to Kirishima and he stayed there. He just continued to look at his friend’s chest, how his stomach rose and dipped with every breath. The blond wanted nothing but to wrap his arms around Kirishima’s strong body and lay his head on his chest, over his heart, to hear how alive and true the redhead was. To be honest, he wanted to do that every night, after Kirishima came late without notice. Punch him and then hug him for making him worried.
Bakugou had never wanted to be physical with someone but… it was always different with Kirishima.
“Are you having fun?” asked Kirishima.
Bakugou looked up, panicked that he had been caught looking at Kirishima’s abs, but the redhead still had his eyes closed.
“If your idea of fun is being drenched in sweat, then I’m having a blast.” Bakugou said sarcastically. He gave another sip to his SUPER MEGA iced drink but this time the refreshment wasn’t as strong as before.
“Knew you would say that.” Smirked Kirishima. “So to add to the fun, we were planning to do a bonfire.”
“What is it with you idiots and your fascination with being sweaty?” Bakugou just wanted for the sun to disappear and take a shower.
A bead of sweat ran its way from his temple to fall from his chin.
Make it three showers.
“Hey,” the redhead propped himself on his elbows, “the nights are super chilly here if you haven’t noticed. So what’s wrong about wanting to stay a little warm before going to bed?”
Bakugou moved his sunglasses above his eyes and gave Kirishima his It’s-fucking-stupid-that’s-what-it-is face.
Kirishima challenged him with his Don’t-be-so-grumpy face. “It will be fun! We will eat dinner and play a few games. You can’t miss this.”
The heat was making Bakugou weak. That must be why.
The blond just rolled his eyes and placed his sunglasses back on his nose. “Better fucking be fun or I’m leaving tomorrow”. Kirishima gasped and before he could say anything, “It was a joke, Shitty Hair. Now shut up and let me finish this chapter or you don’t get shade privileges.”
Kirishima’s smile beamed like the sun. And it was directed straight to Bakugou ‘s heart.
“Stop that!”
“Okay okay.” Snickered Kirishima as he laid down on his back once again.
Bakugou gave it his all to concentrate on the lines instead of Kirishima’s slow breath.
*-*-*-*
When the sun began to set, everyone was already moving to the beach house to prepare the simple dinner that they were going to share. Bakugou was glad the sun was already going down and started to pick the towel and the umbrella. He survived another day in the murderous heat of the beach. Kirishima had stayed asleep all the while, but instantly stood up and helped Bakugou with the umbrella and other things.
They were already walking back when the redhead gasped and abruptly made Bakugou turn around and admire the sunset.
“Look, Bakugou! The sunset is so pretty.” Kirishima grabbed Bakugou’s sunglasses and perched them on his own head.
Bakugou grumbled at the obstruction of private space but looked at the sunset. Bakugou was a morning person, so he always saw the sunrise, purples turning into orange, a bright yellow, and then specks of the oncoming blue sky. The sunset was no different, but being at the beach made it seem like the sun was coming to finally rest on the waves, to cool off and wait for the next day.
The horizon was turning red, with orange surrounding the bright giant. The few clouds that were in the sky were turning a bright red against the dark canvas behind them. The colors were so beautiful and Bakugou would be lying if he wanted the rest of the day to be like this.
“It really is beautiful,” breathed Bakugou.
Kirishima proceeded to drop his arm on the blond’s shoulders. “It has red and orange, our colors dude!”
Bakugou didn’t feel hot anymore, the chilled air helping him to cool down, but Kirishima was so warm, the comfortable kind, he unconsciously moved closer.
“Mmmm and what do your stars say about that?” said Bakugou, not breaking eye contact with the setting sun.
“It means we go well together.”
Bakugou didn’t know what to say immediately. He just continued to stare at the horizon, the red’s almost disappearing and the dark blue gaining ground on the sky. Bakugou looked up at his friend’s face, because Kirishima was taller than him, and took a quick, short breath.
He saw the dying light being reflected on Kirishima’s face, how the orange looked so well on his skin, but he also saw deep crimson eyes staring back at him.
Words and air were stuck in his throat. He didn’t know what he was seeing in Kirishima’s eyes. Was it longing, kindness or just friendship? Bakugou’s brain couldn't wrap around on any of them. So he did what he thought was best.
Bakugou broke eye contact and looked at the sun. Only the top part of the sun was visible now on the horizon. In just a few seconds, the spell will be broken and Bakugou didn’t want to ignore Kirishima’s feelings, whether they were of love or not.
“Might as well stay close, right?”
And the sun was gone.
Bakugou left Kirishima’s warmth and started for the house. “Come on, Shitty Hair, we have to help the others for your bonfire night.”
The blond didn’t look back, afraid to be ensnared in those eyes again, but he soon enough heard Kirishima running behind him.
“Wait for me!”
Bakugou had to turn this around, stop the funny feeling in his chest, so he went on a full sprint as he yelled “TOO SLOW!”
Both of them entered the house sprinting, panting for breath. Denki had faked being the referee and claimed that Kirishima had entered first. Bakugou threw him the finger and joined the rest of his class in the kitchen because that’s where he knew he could be most helpful. Even if they were going to eat only sandwiches, he would make the best sandwiches. Let the other take care of the fire and sitting.
*-*-*-*
The night was really cold so Bakugou was grateful for the bonfire. Everyone sat on whatever they could find: chairs, boxes, suitcases, even the box cooler. Bakugou and Kirishima had managed to take dibs on some chairs and sat comfortably next to each other.
Todoroki had started the fire and Jirou pressed play to a light soundtrack while they started eating, drinking, and chatting. Everyone was catching up to what the others were doing. Some of Bakugou’s classmates were doing good on the agencies they were working in; others were asked to continue their hero paths on other parts of Japan or overseas, and others were planning on opening their own agencies. Some of them mentioned how Bakugou was rising on the ranks, even if he was still under Mirko’s agency. Bakugou just smirked all the while, letting his actions speak for themselves. But that reminded him that he was really planning to open his own hero agency. He wanted to be his own boss, but he still didn’t want to do it on his own.
He still had to ask Kirishima what he thought about opening one together.
The talk was getting too serious, and nobody wanted to talk about work anymore, so they started playing games.
They started with karaoke, Mina singing ‘Dancing Queen’ with the rest of the girls. They were jumping and mostly screaming so Bakugou at them with disgusted eyes. Seeing his face, the girls made a plan. When ‘Fireworks’ began Hagakure pushed Bakugou off his seat and all the girls started dancing around him. They were shoving him in their mini mosh pit and then Kirishima showed up and both of them were being thrashed around by the girls.
They managed to get out and everyone was laughing. Bakugou was raging and cursing all the way until Kirishima manhandled him and sat him on his chair. Next up was Deku, who started singing ‘I need a hero’ off-key. The grennette was looking at Todoroki, pointing him with his index finger and there was an uproar. Bakugou dragged his hands over his face when the half and half bastard got up and picked Deku bridal style around the bonfire. Deku was so embarrassed he let the mic drop to the ground to cover his blushed face.
Bakugou had a sudden urge to sing, so he snatched the mic and told Jirou what was the next song. She smirked knowingly and pressed play. The speakers came to life and Bakugou started singing ‘You’re gonna go far kid’. Yes, soft rock for a karaoke but the song had been on his mind lately. And people paid no mind when he sang more loudly whenever ‘fucker’ came on the lyrics.
Then they played a ‘Guess who you are?’ game, where everyone had to put a post-it on their forehead and guess what was written on it by making a yes or no question. One by one, his classmates got their guesses right, and at last, it was Iida and Bakugou that didn’t know who they were. Some of his classmates were starting to give them hints.
“You are both sexy!” yelled Denki, getting a hit from Jirou on the back of his head.
“You are pro heroes!” yelled Satou on the back.
Bakugou could only think about one sexy pro hero but it was a man, not a woman as his post-it indicated. Fuck, he didn’t think anyone was sexy except for his roommate.
Iida gasped and stood so fast that his chair flew off. “MOUNT LADY!”
Everyone started to cheer and laugh at Iida victory dance, basically chopping the air with his arms. Bakugou was dead last and he did not dare to say a wrong name, so he snatched the post-it and instantly set it on fire.
“WHO THE FUCK IS UWABAMI?”
Bakugou was surrounded by gasps, dumbfounded stares, and high-pitched laughs. The blond just grumbled and crossed his arms. Kirishima patted his back and Bakugou’s pouted lips turned into a tight line.
Then they played charades on teams. There were several themes like animals, sitcoms, pro heroes, movies, anything you wanted. Bakugou and Kiri were a team and they were slaying the others, being in complete sync as each of them acted out the words. It didn’t matter if it was him or Kirishima guessing, they were getting the answer right every time.
Uraraka started complaining and saying that they were cheating because Kirishima just bent one finger and Bakugou yelled “DEKU!” guessing right the charade.
“We just go well together, Round Cheeks.” smirked Bakugou. He had said it without thinking and that earned him some teasing from Denki and Mina. The blond just rolled his eyes and looked at Kirishima, who seemed to be looking straight at the fire. All of his muscles tense.
After the games, Jirou started to play a soft playlist since everyone was already winding down and yawning. The fire was not dying out since Todoroki was in charge of keeping track of it, so the chill never bothered them. Bakugou was still holding his unfinished beer, swirling the liquid in circles. He was tired and his eyelids were almost closing when Kirishima came into his space and said, “Do you want to take a walk?”
Bakugou didn’t want to live the warmth of the fire, but he also wanted to spend time with Kirishima, so he just nodded and got up with him.
Because of the bonfire’s light, Bakugou hadn’t noticed how bright the stars were in the sky. Back in their apartment, they could see a few dotting the night, but here it was like someone spilled glitter and couldn’t pick it up. There was a full moon as well, lighting their path as they continued to walk. Neither of them was talking, and that was alright. They enjoyed being in each other’s presence, the sound of the waves being background sound.
Bakugou hadn’t noticed how he was mindlessly rubbing his arms against the cold when Kirishima placed a jacket over his shoulders. Bakugou looked up and the redhead was rubbing the back of his neck.
“You seemed cold so… there you go.”
Bakugou stared back, accepting the jacket. He put on the jacket and tried to adjust it to his body frame. Kirishima was a fucking mountain, so the arm’s length was too long and even if he zipped the jacket, the waistband reached half of his thigh. But it was so warm and smelled of burnt wood and smoke and Bakugou basked in it.
“Thanks…”
Kirishima gave him a small smile that reached his eyes and Bakugou could feel it meant something else. It was filled with care and worry, but also with love. And not just the friendship kind.
Should he risk it?
“Kirish-“ started Bakugou, but the redhead shoved him a bit forward and started running.
“YOU’RE IT!”
Bakugou blinked stupidly at the fading figure but soon was running to catch up. He seriously was going to confess but the idiot wanted a race. Fucking awesome.
The blond reached the redhead but Kirishima stopped dead in his tracks and avoided Bakugou’s hand, running in the opposite direction. Bakugou spun backward but Kirishima was already waiting for him. They started this dance of offense and defense but it wasn’t too late before Bakugou managed to touch Kirishima’s arm.
“YOU’RE FUCKING IT!”
But before he could blast himself away, Kirishima grabbed his wrist and pulled him back, driving him to the sand and staying on top of him.
“No, you’re it.” teased Kirishima.
Bakugou struggled in his grip but set himself free and rolled the redhead onto his back, grabbing both of his wrists and placing them on each side of Kirishima’s face.
“Guess who’s it now?”
“Mmmmm, maybe Uwabami?” Kirishima straight up laughed in his face, remembering the bonfire game.
“Shut up!” Bakugou was blushing but his grip was still strong on the redhead’s wrists.
Kirishima just laughed more loudly and soon Bakugou joined with small snickers.
Even after the laughter died down, they didn’t move. Bakugou continued to stare at Kirishima’s face, admiring his perfect skin, the little scar on his right eye, and his full lips. Kirishima was pretty- fuck, he was handsome. Bakugou knew of the fan club he had and it was growing in numbers every day. He was kind of jealous of them because they could show off how much they liked the redhead, without being judged or questioned about it.
But every day he reminded himself that no of those extras saw him when he woke up with his bedhair, or saw him dozing off in front of the TV. None of them would ever hear him singing stupid songs in the shower or how he danced while he cooked.
Kirishima was also staring back at Bakugou, his eyes moving on every inch of his face. Bakugou knew he was blushing, but he didn’t care. He wanted to keep focusing on the redhead’s face. He didn’t know if he would get another chance like this.
Bakugou could feel the redhead’s pulse under his thumb and it was gaining speed fast.
Why was it getting faster? Was Kirishima uncomfortable? Was he excited? What was he thinking? Bakugou wanted to get in Kirishima’s head and see what was going on in there. He wanted to know everything about him, and he knew he would like it just because it was Kirishima.
Bakugou loved this man, and he wanted him for himself.
“Kiri-“
“I want to open an agency with you.” spilled Kirishima. Bakugou stopped breathing, not knowing what to say, so the redhead continued. “I want to open an agency with you and I want to name it DynaRiot or RedMight or Headstrong or Kiribaku or- shit. I just want to do that with you. Well, I want to do a lot of things with you- I want to grow a garden with you, I want to drive to a drive-through at 2 AM and eat with you, I want to travel and hike mountains with you.”
Bakugou’s grip started to get soft but Kirishima continued. “I want to keep living with you, to get a cat, or a dog, and name them Peaches or Mapo or anything! I want to take you out at night- not like a patrol but like to a restaurant or a simple diner. I want to go shopping with you and get yelled at about how you don’t like my crocs or my fashion sense but still accompany me to the cash register. I want to try recipes with you and make them better for you-” Kirishima was talking with a loud voice, so he took a deep breath, still looking at Bakugou. “and I want- I want to just… I just want y-”
“FUCK!” Bakugou seemed to finally react and crushed Kirishima’s cheeks with both of his hands. He was breathing loudly but he didn’t break eye contact. He could feel his own face going through all the shades of red. Kirishima’s eyes seemed to question him but Bakugou continued. “WHAT THE FUCK SHITTY HAIR?”
And this was it, Bakugou knew he had lost the fight against his self-control.
“YES!” he yelled and dropped his lips to Kirishima’s forehead. “YES! I WANT THAT TOO!” a kiss to his nose. “I WANT THAT TOO- FUCK!” a kiss to his cheeks.
He stopped just above Kirishima’s lips, his face still between Bakugou’s hands. Bakugou was so sure now, so sure of what he wanted and that the redhead reciprocated his feelings. He had been so stupid – both of them had been so stupid. Bakugou looked at opposite red eyes and-
Bakugou took a deep breath and said, more softly, “I want you too.” And dived into squished lips.
It was a small peck, but when he came back up, he saw Kirishima’s surprised stare and dropped for another peck. And another, and another and another until Kirishima reacted and grabbed Bakugou’s face and smashed their lips together, this time for more than a few seconds.
Fuck, Bakugou hated how fast he was melting in Kirishima’s hands. It was his first kiss so he didn’t know what to do. But Kirishima stroked his back and he let himself go, going soft and taking what the redhead would give him.
Bakugou broke the kiss because apparently, he needed air to survive. He was panting and looked down at crimson eyes. Kirishima’s hair was all messed up, clearly Bakugou not knowing what to do with his hands while they were kissing, but the redhead still looked radiant under the moonlight.
God, Bakugou wanted to continue the kiss session. These were the only lessons the redhead could give him.
“Do you remember what I said about my lucky day?” said Kirishima softly. Bakugou moved his head sideways in question. Kirishima smiled and -oh Bakugou was dying tonight. “Well, today was my lucky day.”
Bakugou stared back at him with wide eyes, but instead of talking, he inhaled deeply and dived for another kiss. Kirishima just laughed against his lips but accepted the gesture.
*-*-*-*
After a while of just kissing, they got up and started to slowly walk their way back to the beach house. Apparently, their friends were worried about them because they never came back and called their phones several times. Bakugou was pissed but Kirishima kissed him lightly on the lips and picked him up. The blond hated/loved how easily Kirishima could take his weight but decided to not comment on it. He now had touch privileges, so it was good.
Their hands were linked as they walked back, swinging between them. Bakugou had never felt so full in his heart. He was getting addicted to this feeling.
“Soooo," started Kirishima, "I checked and your lucky day is going to be tomorrow.” Said Kirishima.
“What if it is lucky because I make it so?” countered Bakugou, not wanting to give in into this astrological shit.
“That takes the magic out of it.”
“So now you believe in magic?” teased Bakugou. “Be careful Ei, the stars are listening.”
“UGH, don’t make me choose,” Kirishima whispered, wary of the stars. “Maybe it will be cloudy tomorrow.”
“OH, that would make me extremely lucky,” Bakugou laughed.
“You never know what might happen,” said Kirishima, holding their linked hands to his lips and kissing the blond’s hand softly, “my love.” Kirishima smiled and sent a wink.
Bakugou just blushed and looked at the waves. He needed time to adjust to that nickname. But as they continued walking, a shooting star sped through the glitter stars, going away as fast as it came.
“OH, KATSUKI, MAKE A WISH!” screeched Kirishima.
“Are you serious?!”
“YES! Hurry, make a wish!” Kirishima closed his eyes and brought his other hand to his chest.
Bakugou sighed and this the same.
After a while, they opened their eyes and Kirishima started jumping. “So what did you wish for?”
“I wished for you to shut up.”
“Really? Well, I wished for you to grow taller.” Kirishima sent an exaggerated sad pout at Bakugou. “But since we both said our wishes out loud, neither will come true.”
Bakugou was angry at his height comment and flicked Kirishima on the forehead, who just laughed at his own joke.
“Well,” Bakugou unlinked their hands and started running, “I wished for you to catch me but I doubt it now.”
“HEY! Not fair!” Kirishima yelled back but was already running.
Bakugou laughed and continued to run.
He couldn’t tell Kirishima that he wished for them to always be together, even on hot days.
