    On a cold morning, buttered pancakes take on qualities of the divine. Ivan eats his with honey; Alfred, with syrup; and Arthur’s, lemon and sugar, alongside a cup of milk-sweet tea. Their cutlery is mismatched because they’re not used to a third guest, and it seems wholly appropriate: patched together, odd, but functional.
