whatever language you’re speaking to me

Summary:

Eddie and Jamie continue their date night.

Work Text:

Later, after they’d finished their meal and found their way to the bedroom (and confirmed that, while physical touch might not be either of their personal love languages, they both still really liked it), Eddie curled into her husband with a sated sigh, pressing a kiss to his bare chest and smiling against his skin when he gently tugged the sheets up to cover them both. He pressed a kiss to the top of her head, an arm settling around her shoulders as he pulled her closer.

“You’re not that kind of husband, you know,” she murmured, causing him to glance down at her with a furrowed brow. “The kind that ridicules and berates. You never could be.”

“I wasn’t exactly open-minded this week,” Jamie pointed out with a sigh. “You were excited about something. I should have been excited with you. You’ve pretended to be interested in things you couldn’t care less about for my sake, before.”

“Yeah, and you’ve gone with me to the Met three times now, so let’s not pretend I’m the only one who’s good at pretending to be interested in the things I couldn’t care less about for the sake of the person I love,” she said teasingly, patting his chest.

“I’m interested ,” Jamie defended himself laughingly. “I just don’t understand it.”

“An art professor of mine once said that art isn’t meant to be understood. It’s meant to make you feel something.” Eddie grinned at the confused furrow of Jamie’s brows. “Yeah, I’m still not sure that guy knew what he was talking about, but it sounds nice, doesn’t it?”

“It sounds confusing ,” Jamie answered honestly, the bewilderment in his tone causing his wife to burst into laughter. “Exactly what kind of school did you go to, Janko?”

“The Ivy League kind,” she replied pointedly, still smiling. “Same as you.”

“My Intro to Art professor at Harvard didn’t say anything like that,” Jamie remarked thoughtfully. “Then again, she didn’t say much at all. Just sort of… glared at us every time we mispronounced Van Gogh’s name.”

Eddie tilted her head back to glower playfully up at him. “If you keep mispronouncing it that badly, I might have to start glaring at you, too.”

“Understood.” Jamie’s arm tightened around her shoulders. “Just for future reference, how exactly is it meant to be…”

“I’ll walk you through it in the morning,” his wife promised, her eyes drifting shut as she snuggled closer. “For now, it’s almost midnight, and we’ve both got early shifts, so we should…”

“Sleep,” Jamie nodded. “Got it.” He kissed the top of her head. “Hey, Eddie?”

“Hmm?” she murmured in response.

“You know, regardless of what all the tests say, I think my love language is always going to be whichever one it is you’re speaking to me.”

His wife huffed a laugh, shaking her head against his chest with a sleepy grin. “That is incredibly sappy of you.”

“I know.”

“And sweet.” She snuggled closer. “I feel the same way.”
