Chapter Text
The recent revelations are far too much and too soon for one person; superhuman or not.
Things had been different in the past weeks. Their touches had become rougher, the time spent curled beside one another shortened by excuses Kara pretended to understand. But she hadn’t really. She couldn’t comprehend why she’d suddenly wake to empty beds with no texts or notes, why Lena’s stares went from admiring to analyzing.
Kara had recognized the change but her heart so desperately wanted to ignore the warning signs. It had been ignorant. Delusional. And this is where it led her. Face-to-face with Lena Luthor.
Lena; her best friend and so much more. They never discussed what the last year meant for them. What the sleepovers, sex, and talks of their future indicated, but they had been happy, so undeniably happy.
It was only a matter of time before their happiness was extinguished like all good things on Earth. Temporary, human.
“How long had you known?” Kara musters, ignoring the tremble of her hands.
Lena scoffs, gleaming eyes burning into her, “My brother let me in on your secret before I murdered him.”
"Wh-what are you saying? You didn’t -- I killed Lex, I watched him fall.”
“But did you see him die? Did you see the bullet holes? That was all my work, Kara."
Kara wants to believe the woman before her wouldn’t murder her own brother, no matter how cruel and conniving he was. That maybe this is a sick attempt at a joke and Lena truly is sunlight and flowers and nothing more than the purity Kara so desperately needs her to be.
But that’s untrue, they both know that. The eyes before her shine with the cold pride that Luthors have always carried.
“Lena-” the Kryptonian attempts to reach forth, flinching when the brunette steps away with a sneer, “I know that I’ve hurt you with my lies and I am so sorry. I’m sorry that you felt you had to deal with Lex alone, I’m sorry that things are like this, but I need you to know that I never lied when I said I’d stay by your side. My feelings for you, the nights we shared...that was the furthest thing from a lie. I-I love you, I truly do.”
The final words pierce through the air, thick and muddled with conflicting emotion. It’s a truth she’s never been brave enough to admit. Yet, right then, it’s all Kara can think of, it’s all that fills her mind.
She loves Lena- damn it - she has loved her for so long.
“Love?” The youngest Luthor laughs hollowly, “If this-” she gestures wildly, the device in her hand swinging to and from, “-deceit is your way of showing love, then trust me, Supergirl, I don’t want a fucking ounce of it.”
The punch of the other woman's words hits much harder than any opponent has ever managed and as much as Kara wishes to break and vow her alliance, she knows this is much bigger than them. Their relationship is minuscule in comparison to the safety of thousands.
She wishes it wasn't.
“You have the right to be angry at me, to be done...but please- please don’t let my mistakes turn you into someone you’re not. You’re a good-”
“Enough with your lies,” Lena interrupts, voice no longer taunting and light, “I have witnessed your crocodile tears far too many times and I’ll be damned if I fall for them again. I’m done letting you have all the power. I’m done living for you.”
Kara forces down the emotion that threatens to spill over, envying the days where a kiss was enough to mend their wounds.
“If you hate me...if you’ve known for so long, why didn’t you confront me sooner? Why didn’t you expose me at the gala?"
"What good would it have been to do any of that? I had to let you think everything was just fine. I forced myself to hold you knowing that you were nothing more than a conniving bitch waiting for me to show the slightest signs of being a true Luthor."
“That’s not true!" Kara grits, "I know you’re nothing like Lex or your father or-”
“Aren’t I?” Lena spits, pacing about, “ Aren’t you? Maybe we’re all more alike than we thought. We lie, we betray, we use others for our benefit, and we kill.”
“Please-”
“I killed my brother for you, Kara, I held a gun and I shot him because that is what I needed to do. Don’t you understand that I was ready to lose everything?”
“And you shouldn’t have had to burden that alone, I would -- I will be there for you. Let me be there for you, let me right my wrongs...please.”
The brunette’s eyes soften ever so slightly, resembling the kind woman who’d held her close all the nights before.
The softness is gone as quickly as it came.
There is no warning as smoke surrounds her, the sickening burn of kryptonite running through her veins. Kara is paralyzed and torn as she blinks up at the older woman.
Lena flaunts a red button in her hand, toying with it proudly, “Kryptonite for my favorite Kryptonian.”
“You’re going to kill me?” Kara rasps, uncaring that her tears are now falling freely.
The woman she loves has trapped her, poisoned her. The universe truly was a cursed place.
Lena's grin returns, cunning, and revolting in nature, “No, my beautiful girl,” she reaches forth toying with strands of blonde hair thoughtfully. Her hand traces lower, gripping the hero’s chin firmly as she whispers, “I think I’ll keep you around.”
“This isn't you, Lena."
“You don’t know me, Kara, you never have. I wasn’t a villain, and yet you treated me like one. So-”
She navigates the device in her hand with ease. A portal opens in a swirl of ominous purple, in harmony with the brunette's darkness.
Lena beams as she enters, the sounds of her heels clicking strong and steady, “-I’m going to be a fucking villain now, sweetheart.”
