Chapter Text
Hello, fellow MHA nerds! For those of you who were notified about this fic because you follow my other stories, sorry that this isn't for the Evil Queen's Brother or Northern Winds. I don't typically write anime fanfics given how long they are, but this is an idea I've had in my head for over a year now, and I wanna act on it. The reason why it took me so long to act on it was because I could never settle on a pairing for my OC. HOWEVER! That changed earlier this week! So, I no longer have any excuses. In any case, here's the first chapter, and basically trial run. I hope you all enjoy it and give me plenty of feedback, I don't have nearly as elaborate of a plan for this as I do for my other stories, but I think it will be enjoyable, nonetheless. Enjoy!
Disclaimer: I do not own anything from MHA, only my OCs.
Quirks, the common name for superpowers in a world where bizarre, unique abilities are common. A quirk could be just about any kind of power: super-strength, flight, speed, controlling the elements or even forms of energy; or even physical mutations that often make a person hardly human. For decades, the world has seen many varieties of quirks, and those who wield them. With the rise of such extraordinary powers, it was only natural for the rise of costumed heroes and sinister villains. After so many years of heroes rising and falling against villainy, lawful society eventually came to the mutual agreement and conclusion that in order to maintain peace and justice, masked/caped heroes and heroines would become a criminal-justice-centered career. Eventually, this developed enough for multiple academies, all over the world, being formed to train future heroes, and the one that stood out the most, at least in Japan, was U.A. High School.
Anyone who dreamed of becoming a hero in Japan aspired to attend the country's top ranked academy, despite the difficultly to get in. Even for someone with a quirk as powerful as our main character's, Kisuke Mamoru, the butterflies in his stomach would not go away on the train ride to the academy.
"Okay, no big deal. Just gonna go take an entrance exam, nothing more, nothing less. No big deal, no big deal." he thought to himself, trying to convince his frantic nerves and bouncing leg to calm down. Although, it did not work. "Ay-yay-yay-yay! I am so gosh-freaking nervous~!" he sang in his head as his sky-blue eyes dilated to mere dots and his dark purple, nearly black, hair dampened with beads of sweat. Out of the corner of his eye, he spotted another passenger, roughly the same age as him, dealing with his own nerves. Although, this kid was about as upright and ridged as a board. If he hadn't been sitting down, what with his bushy green hair and all, he would have resembled a tree in a black, school uniform. Hoping it would bring some ease to his nerves, Kisuke decided to break the ice.
"So…I take it your heading to U.A.'s entrance exam, too?" he awkwardly asked the kid. The moment his voice filled the air, the other boy jolted in alert and realized Kisuke's presence.
"Huh? Oh, uh, yep! I sure am." the kid sheepishly laughed, clearly just as nervous.
"Crazy, huh; how nervous this whole thing can make a person? Sorry if this is too random. Just trying to deal with my own nerves, I guess?" he nervously chuckled, "I'm Kisuke, by the way; Kisuke Mamoru."
"My name's Izuku Midoriya, nice to meet you." Izuku warmly smiled, "You're right about this being nerve-wracking, though. I really hope I get accepted," he said before his smile morphed into a look of cringed-horror and muttered, "especially after what I just went through over the last ten months."
"Uh, say what now?" Kisuke asked with a curious head-tilt.
"Oh, uh, never mind! It's nothing." Izuku awkwardly laughed in dismissal, "I wonder what kind of test they'll have us take? I mean, I know we'll have a written test afterwards, but they never said what we'd have to do for the practical exam."
"Hmm, I dunno. Most likely some kind of scenario involving a situation normally seen in the field that requires us to display our quirks." Kisuke mused casually, "But whatever it ends up being, being U.A. and all, it'll be 'Plus Ultra'!" Eventually, the train came to a stop and the two would-be-heroes walked to the front gates of the alma mater of countless legends: U.A. High School! "So, this is it." Kisuke stated.
"Yep. Su-ss-sure is!" Izuku nervously agreed while his knees were knocking in fear.
"Hang in there, man. You'll get through it." Kisuke assured with a friendly pat on the back. As this happened, the sound of a gruff, unfriendly voice caused Izuku to jolt and stop all shaking.
"Looks like stupid Deku showed up after all." a platinum blonde, sinister looking boy said, with hair and red eyes as wild as an explosion.
"Ka-Kachan!" Izuku squeaked as the apparent jerk walked towards them.
"Get out of my way before I set your ass on fire!" he threatened before walking past them, all while Izuku rambled in fear and Kisuke glared in anger.
"What the hell? You don't go saying something like out of nowhere without a good reason!" he exclaimed, earning himself a glare that was meant to intimidate him, but merely annoyed him due to the ocean of arrogance behind it.
"The hell did you say to me, shit-stain?" the brat asked.
"You heard me, you stuck-up asshole!" Kisuke retorted as they were now only inches apart, "I'd say you're only like this because you didn't have your morning coffee today, but given how terrible your breath is, I'd be wrong. It's not nearly as bad as your personality and facial expression, but it's a close second. In fact, it's the only thing shit-related here!" Off to the side, Izuku looked like he was about to witness a massacre, but, for the time being, it was still a stand-off.
"You looking to get murdered?"
"I've seen wild, hissing geese more intimidating than you. I didn't run from them, so I'm certainly not gonna run from you, punk." Kisuke retorted, "I didn't come here to mess with arrogant turds like you, so why don't you get out of my way?"
For a few moments, neither adversary made another move or sound as they waited to see who would break first. Much to Izuku's utter shock, it was the blonde who gave in first. "Tch! Whatever. You're not worth my time. I'm here to become a hero, and heroes don't handle garbage like you." And with that, the foul-tempered/mouthed stranger walked towards the entrance in a huff.
"Ooh! I hope I get to kick his ass during the practical exam. That guys just pissed me off more than anyone I've ever met!" Kisuke seethed.
"I don't believe it." Izuku finally said, gaining Kisuke's attention, "You just talked back to Kachan and made him walk away without getting hurt."
"Like that punk could hurt me. Wait, you know that guy?" he asked.
"Yeah. Believe it or not, he's actually my oldest friend and classmate." Izuku sheepishly answered while rubbing the back of his head.
"Him?! Geez! With friends like that, who needs enemies? Does he always talk to people like that?" Kisuke asked earning a nod, "Holy crap!"
"He's actually been taking it easier on me for a while now. Ever since that incident with the sludge villain last year. But yeah, that's Kachan."
"Well, if he keeps giving you a hard time, let me know. I'd be more than happy to knock that guy down a dozen pegs, or so. Seems to me like he really needs it."
"Thanks, but don't worry about me." Izuku bashfully chuckled before looking determined at the school building, "I decided I wasn't going to let anyone stop me from achieving my dream to become a hero, and I'm not gonna go back on my promise now. Today marks the first step on that path. I'm going to become a hero!" he declared as he took that first step on his path…which turned into him tripping himself and plummeting to the ground.
"Or I'll just die!" he cried out in his head before suddenly stopping. When he realized what happened, he noticed a cute, bob-cut brunette girl with blushed mochi cheeks standing next to him with her hand on his arm.
"Are you okay?" she asked with a slight giggle. Given how cute she was, Izuku fumbled over himself and realized he was currently floating. "I stopped you with my quirk. Sorry if I didn't ask first. But I figured you wouldn't mind." she said while deactivating her power, "Isn't this so nerve-wracking? Well, guess I'll see you inside. Bye!"
As the curvy-cutie walked to the doors, Izuku was utterly stunned at what just happened to him. "Holy cow, I just talked to a girl!" he cheered in his head, despite not actually having talked to her.
Off to the side Kisuke was simply nodding his head in approval. "I ship it. I really do. If the three of us get in, I've got to make sure those two get together."
After all the applicants had arrived and took their seats in the orientation room, a pro hero, and faculty member of U.A. got things underway. Dressed in his hero uniform, the loudmouthed hero Present Mic welcomed everyone sitting in front of him.
"Wazz up, U.A. candidates? Thanks for tuning into me, your school D.J., Present Mic! Let me here ya make some noise!" he enthusiastically greeted, only to earn silence from the confused crowd. "Keeping it mellow, that's cool! Let's get down to it then. You ready to rock?!" he asked only to hear more silence.
"I'm honestly tempted to start playing cricket noises the next time this happens." Kisuke thought as he sat in the dark between an invisible girl and a guy with freaky elbows.
"Today, you kids will be conducting mock battles in super-hip suburban settings! Before any of you can ask for an encore after my stunning performance, you'll each be heading to your designated areas where you'll be showing us what you've got. In each battle zone, there will be three types of targets for you to face off against. Each one will be assigned a number of points from 1-3. In order to pass this exam, you'll need to get as many points as possible in the time period. And remember, it's first come first serve, yo! But try to keep it fresh and heroic; that means no attacking any of your fellow candidates. Anyone who does will be immediately disqualified and sent home! It's a big U.A. no-no, ya dig?"
"Excuse me, sir, but I have a question." one of the many candidates suddenly interrupted. It was hard to tell from where he was sitting, but Kisuke could somewhat tell this guy was rather serious about…everything.
"Hit me!" Present Mic allowed.
"On the print out, there are four listed villains we will be engaging, not three. With all respect, if this is an error on U.A.'s part, it is inexcusable and shameful! We are all exemplary students, and expect the best from the number one hero school in Japan. Such simple mistakes on the exams that decide whether or not we are worthy to attend such an institute should not be permitted! Also," he carried as he swung his finger in the direction of Izuku, "you, the boy with the unkempt hair! Your muttering throughout the orientation has been disrespectful and annoying. Stop that, at once."
"…Okay then…" Kisuke trailed off earning light chuckles from the two he sat between.
"Alright, alright, cool your jets, folks." Present Mic calmly eased, "Let me assure you all, this is not a misprint. The fourth villain type you rock stars will be facing today is actually worth zero points! There will be one in every station, and while they're not unbeatable, there's just no point to fighting something worth no points, ya feel?"
"If those pixel images are anything to go by, those zero pointers have got to be huge." the guy on Kisuke's right whispered.
"And in city areas, too, no less. That's gonna make dealing with them even harder." he nodded.
"That's all I've got today, kids. But before I go, I'll sign off with a little present; a sample of our school motto!" Present Mic informed, "As Napoleon Bonaparte once said, 'A true hero is one who overcomes life's misfortunes.' Pretty tasty soundbite, right? So then, who's ready to beyond PLUS ULTRA?!"
"Hell yeah!" Kisuke thought with determination as he clenched his fists with glee. After everyone was given the chance to change into the workout clothes they brought, each candidate was escorted outside to their assigned area. To his disappointment, Kisuke noticed his new friend was nowhere in sight. It was a shame, he really wanted to see what kind of quirk the freckled broccoli piece had. Nevertheless, there were plenty of interesting looking teenagers around him. If he were to go off appearances alone, Kisuke would have guessed there were some pretty strange quirk users; case in point, the calico-eyed boy with red and white hair and burn mark to his right, and the jagged, rocky-looking kid on his left. Everyone seemed eager to start until Present Mic announced to them to begin without much of a warning. Not wanting to waste time, the black-haired teen took off and split away from the mob.
"Alright, all I need to do is get as many points as I can in the time limit. But since I can't fend off any of the others, I'll have to go for whatever crosses my path." he planned out as he ran, "I don't want too many people to figure out how my quirk works before I even get in, so I'll have to be discrete." Just up ahead, a three-pointer robot rounded the corner and locked eyes with him. Unfortunately, there were two other teenagers closer to it. Stuffing his hands into his sweat-hoodie, Kisuke prepared himself to attack. "Shit! I gotta time this right! Here we go!" he thought before bursting off the ground towards the robot's head. With a display of impressive agility and skill, he flipped in mid-air and drove his foot directly through the machine.
"Holy crap! He just flew straight through that thing!" one of the teens exclaimed.
"Hey, dude, that was mine!" the other raved.
"You heard the karaoke machine with the cow-lick, it's first come first serve! Later!" Kisuke shouted as he landed on the ground and kept on running. "Okay, that's three points with about eight minutes remaining. So far so good." For the next few minutes, Kisuke was able to accumulate another twenty-eight points, all while dodging others' long-ranged attacks. It had proven to be especially dangerous when a giant wall of ice suddenly appeared. With only five minutes remaining, the hero-to-be was starting to get worried about his lack of points. He had no idea what a passing score would be and did not feel satisfied with what he had. Even as he was kicking through a row of two twos and a three, he still felt this.
"Crap! Everyone spreading out like this is making it all the more difficult to find more robots." he thought while looking around, "I could always launch myself above the buildings to get a better view. No! That'll just waste time going up and getting back down. Dammit, why do I have to be so weird about my quirk?! Just bite the bullet and let loose, already!"
"Only two minutes remaining!" Present Mic alerted them all.
"What?!" Kisuke panicked, "I thought it was more than that! What do I do? I'm running out of time!"
"Watch out!" one of the others shouted as he pointed to the sky. Following his finger, everyone looked up to see a giant robot's head hurdling through the air in their direction.
"What is that thing?!"
"Where did it come from?!"
"Someone from another arena must have blown it away, run for it!" they all shouted as they ran away. Everyone ran from the falling debris in mass panic. Even Kisuke darted back a bit to avoid getting crushed. However, since he hadn't turned his back, he was able to see something the others did not. Based on the trajectory of the head, it was going to sail right over him, if he stayed in place, and crash into the buildings on the street where the others were running. Unless someone, or something, altered its course, the head could very well put everyone in the arena in danger.
"It'll slam right into the top three floors of the building behind me on my right." Kisuke plotted out as he ran the scenario in his head. "It will then fall through the remaining floors in an angle causing dust and debris from the building to smother the others. And then the head will most likely explode; either from the impact of the fall, or whatever attack severed it to begin with. Even if the pros watching us do step in, someone is bound to get seriously hurt. Based on all that, I can either wait for someone else to step in and stop it, or I do it myself."
Realizing what the obvious solution was, Kisuke turned his fear into courage, stuffed his hands into his pockets, and used his quirk to jump into the air to meet the giant robot head…head on. Using all the strength he had to move his leg in mid-air, the enhanced teenager swung his leg straight up to kick the machine and send it on a different path; directly upwards. Based on his calculations, the head would land exactly beneath its current position, in the middle of the abandoned street. As Kisuke began to fall back to the ground, not panicking in the slightest as he did, the other competing teenagers looked up at him in amazement.
"Did you see what he just did?"
"That's just like All Might!"
"What kind of quirk does this guy have?"
"Must be some kind of super strength or enhance durability quirk."
All these comments, and more, were muttered about in the crowd of onlookers while Kisuke returned to the ground. Despite being over a dozen stories in the air, his touchdown to the battle arena did not create any kind of crater or damage, not to the concrete, or to him. After he landed, the head had finally descended and crashed just behind him. Seeing this was more than enough to cause the others to worry. However, when they all saw him casually walk through the smoke with his hands stuffed in his hoodie, hardly any jaws in the crowd were not unslacken.
"He's so cool!" they all shouted in their minds as they watched him. However, none of them were able to see through his mask of indifference.
"Ow! I should've stretched!" he screamed in his mind while struggling not to wince or limp from the hamstring he pulled. Had this happened earlier during the exam, he would have been panicking over the hindrance he now had. But he was aware that at any second, Present Mic would be announcing the end of the exam.
"Time's up!" the pro hollered through the mic. Thirty-eight points; that's all Kisuke was able to obtain during the mock battle. Since he had no idea what was considered passing, that nagging thought of him failing was bouncing around in the back of his head like a super-ball for the remainder of the day. Even during the written exam, he could hear the echoes of self-doubt in his mind while simultaneously thinking about his answers. Once both parts of the exam were finished, the young, would-be-hero made his way home to await his results. Actually, he had to return to his hotel room first before heading home the next day. Unlike most of the candidates who either lived in Musutafu City, Kisuke was actually from Okinawa, where his family owned their own land and estate. It was a beautiful, traditional Japanese manor fit with the best of modern technology for comfortable living. Also, to the side of the living quarters, there was even a training dojo for martial arts and kendo, which was currently being used from what he could hear. But despite the pure luxury of the place, there was a sense of dread towards his return.
"I'm home!" he announced while taking off his shoes at the front door. As soon as he announced this, the small, brown-hair-covered head of a little girl, no more than five, popped around the hallway to see who it was.
"Kisuke!" the child happily cheered as she ran towards him, only to fall flat on her face halfway there. Considering she was wearing pink, fluffy socks on her feet, it was not much of a surprise that she did. Slightly chuckling, the teen helped the girl to her feet and made sure she did not hurt herself.
"Miharu, how many times are you going to keep falling on your face before you learn not to run on these floors while wearing socks?" he asked before the girl threw her little arms around his neck to tightly hug him. "Aw, I missed you, too. Were you good while I was gone?"
"Yep!" Miharu nodded after pulling away, her pink eyes shining with youthful innocence. "I got to practice my quirk with big sis in the dojo yesterday!"
"You did? That's great!" Kisuke praised happily, "Has Kotaro been helping any?"
"Nah! He just sleeps and eats all day. He doesn't even know how to play anything but roll the ball!" Miharu pouted.
"Well, that just means you have to teach him a new game! How else is he gonna learn if his big sister doesn't teach him anything, huh?" he teased. "So, where's everybody else?"
"Daddy, big sis, and big brother are all in the dojo, and Mommy and grandma are out shopping for dinner."
"Really? Well, I better go see them before they get mad at me for hogging you all to myself." he joked before pecking her cheek, causing the cutie to happily blush. Heading up to his room, and catching a quick glance at an adorable, two-year-old boy napping on a mini futon in the living room, Kisuke dropped off his luggage before heading out to the dojo.
As he came closer and closer to the large, wooden doors of the dojo, the sounds of grunts, thumping and shattering glass increased in volume. Once he opened the doors, he saw three people he was dreading to see. Each one of them was dressed in a martial arts gi, but only the two youngest were training. One was a beautiful, eighteen-year-old girl with long, flowing, brown hair tied in a ponytail, with pink eyes wielding a black bo-staff that appeared to be made of glass; and expertly wielding it, at that. Had Present Mic been there, Kisuke imagined, he probably would have made a synopsis such as this.
"Kyoko Mamoru! Her quirk: Pillar! She can create pillars of any length and width she desires at the cost of her body's stored electrolytes. For every pillar she creates, depending on their measurements, she loses a certain percentage of those electrolytes. As long as she keeps holding them, her pillars won't disappear. They may look like glass, but one strike from this deadly beauty will shatter you, instead!"
The other was a handsome, sixteen-year-old boy with a furious, determined look on his face with spiked brown hair and turquoise eyes hurling violet, glass-like spikes from the palms of his hands. Even though he was he was rapidly firing the projectiles, none of them landed on the girl, either because he missed, or she blocked and shattered them with her staff. Once again, while watching the spar, Kisuke imagined how Present Mic would introduce his family member.
"Hachi Mamoru! His quirk: Stinger! He can create spike-like projectiles from the palms of his hands and fire them like arrows at the cost of his body's stored protein and calcium reserves. Currently, he can't balance out the exact levels he needs to draw from both these nutrients, resulting in fragile spikes. They may not be dense enough to impale anything, but it sure does hurt to get hit by them!"
While spinning her staff with speed and grace, Kyoko caught a glance at Kisuke out of the corner of her eye and decided to end things. Using the staff to flip over, Kyoko landed a blow on her younger brother's shoulder, stunning him before jabbing him in the stomach, thus knocking the wind out of him and dropping him to his knees. Once he had fallen, the elder girl swiftly turned and bowed to the man observing them. Seeing that the man was still wearing his ever cold and judgmental expression was no surprise at all to Kisuke; especially since he had not even acknowledged his son struggling to breathe and pick himself up. With hair ashen gray hair and turquoise eyes like his son's, the man in his mid-thirties looked down his nose at them all.
Had he even been worth announcing, Kisuke imagined Present Mic would say something like, "Gorobei Mamoru! Head of the Mamoru family and quirkless!"
"Well done, Kyoko. Your agility is improving. However, your motions have not become nearly as fluid as they need to be." he instructed.
"Yes, Father." Kyoko bowed.
"Hachi," Gorobei neutrally said while his son was still gasping on the floor, "You have much you need to improve on. Specifically, your lack of control and frustration that causes this. I expect you to arrive two hours early tomorrow morning to work on this."
"Yes, Father." Hachi gritted in frustration as he stood up.
"Kisuke!" Gorobei acknowledged, "Enter and close the door behind you."
After doing so, Kisuke formally bowed and greeted his family. "Uncle, cousins, I have returned from Mustafa; I completed the entrance exam for U.A. High. I was told the results would arrive by this Saturday."
"Welcome back, Kisuke." Kyoko greeted with a friendly smirk while Hachi simply crossed his arms.
"I expect you to have passed the exam, nephew. However, if you did fail, I have your recommendation for Shiketsu High in reserve. I trust you understand what will be required of you should that be necessary, yes?"
"Yes, Uncle." Kisuke bowed neutrally.
"I'd think it'd be great if you went to Shiketsu." Kyoko beamed, "They're a little strict sometimes, but I loved going there!"
"He's better off going to U.A. in order to do his duty to the family, Kyoko. Just as your acceptance to Shiketsu was better suited to yours." Gorobei stiffly reminded. "Never forget why you three train as hard you do. Our family's honor must be restored, and the three of you must restore it. Otherwise, we will remain shamed."
"I honestly don't understand why you're pinning all your hopes on him, Father. When it comes down to it, there's no way he'd be able to put up a fight against our enemy." Hachi taunted with a sneer towards his younger cousin.
"He would certainly last longer than you would, Hachi." Gorobei coldly retorted, "Even Miharu has displayed better control over her quirk than you did at her age. Furthermore, you were unable to be accepted into any of the hero courses you applied for. Had it not been for my connections to Shiketsu, you would never have been able to legally begin your training. And your lack of control against your opponents has not improved since you began."
"But, Father, I can-"
"I have four children, and yet I trust none of them to accomplish the task this family must succeed in order to restore our honor." Gorobei coldly explained as he walked past his children and nephew to the door, "And the one member of my family who I believe is the only one capable of doing so lacks the necessary conviction; just like his father."
At the mention of his late father, Kisuke's pupils dilated in anger while he tightly clenched his fists. The only reason Kisuke did not lash out against his uncle was out of gratitude for him and his wife taking him into their home and raising him after he was orphaned as a child. "Now, all of you, get washed up. Kanade and her mother will be back from the market soon with dinner."
After the head of their family left them, Kisuke looked to Hachi who was seething in frustrated anger. Despite being Gorobei's first son, there was never anything the young man could do to please his father's impossible standards and expectations. Because of this, the second eldest member of the Mamoru family's current generation had more than a few issues.
Trying to comfort the closest thing he had to a big brother, Kisuke reached out his hand in sympathy. "Hachi, are you-"
"Don't touch me!" he spat, harshly shrugging off his cousin's hand. "I don't need your pity." Without another word, the bitter, unappreciated son stormed out of the dojo, leaving his cousin and sister behind.
"He's never going to understand the futility of trying to please that man." Kyoko sighed. "There's nothing in this world that will ever make him truly happy. Not any of us, or even that suicide mission he's sent us on. Whatever, I stopped trying a long time ago, Hachi should do the same."
As his eldest cousin walked away, Kisuke finally spoke up. "It doesn't have to be a suicide mission, you know?"
"What?" she asked coming to a halt.
"We don't have to kill him." Kisuke said with a bit of anger in his voice, "There's no point in any of this, Kyoko!"
"Have you forgotten how much that bastard shamed our family?" she hotly retorted.
"Did he shame our family? Or did he just make your father feel that way?" he shot back, "I don't care what Gorobei says or wants me to do. I'm not going to become a hero just for the sake of killing someone he holds a grudge against."
"After everything we've done for you, you would deny us justice?" Kyoko asked.
"I am not staining my hands for you people just make you all feel better!"
"…Fine. Do what you want, I don't care." Kyoko waved off as she turned to walk away. But as she did, she continued to speak. "But just keep this in mind, little cousin; if you do walk down the path of a pro hero, your hands will become stained. Either with the blood of your enemies, of the blood of the people you failed to save. Contrary to your quirk, you can't save everyone."
For the remainder of the week, Kisuke kept his distance from his elder cousins outside the dojo as much as possible. What little interaction he had with his uncle was neutral, at best. Neither of them were particularly close with each other, and neither of them had the urge to change that. They were simply uncle and nephew, nothing more, nothing less. As for the rest of his family, Kisuke took the time to play with his younger cousins and help out his aunt and her mother however he could. Since Kanade was not involved with her children's training, she did not care much for the task her husband had bestowed upon them. Some would call this neglectful, but frankly, Kisuke always felt like it was a breath of fresh air; someone who would not bring up such a touchy subject despite knowing about it, and still treating the younger family members as normal youngsters. Finally, come Saturday afternoon, Kisuke received his test results from U.A.
"Okay, moment of truth." he exhaled as he sat on his bed and activated the holo-recording. Much to his surprise, the person who made the recording was none other than the number one hero in all of Japan: All Might!
"I AM HERE, as a holographic projection!" the smiling, blonde lump of muscle cried out, actually startling Kisuke at the sudden exclamation. "Kisuke Mamoru, your test results for U.A. High School's entrance exam have been carefully graded by our esteemed faculty. As such, since I have been granted the honor of training future generations of heroes at my alma mater starting this year, I have also been granted the pleasure of informing each applicant their status. Young Mamoru, you displayed extraordinary strength and skill during the first half of the practical exam. The use of your quirk was rather unexpected based on your registration form, but effective nonetheless. Truly, young man, you have a power to be proud of."
"I can't believe All Might himself is praising me!" Kisuke squealed in his mind.
"Now then, as for your score. Before the unexpected hazard caused by another student punching off the head of one of the zero pointers, you accumulated a total of thirty-eight points. Unfortunately, that is not enough to pass the practical exam."
The moment those words were processed, Kisuke felt an icy grip on his heart. So many thoughts flooded his mind as he began to berate himself for not using his quirk to its full potential. But just before he was fully consumed by dread, All Might's booming voice startled him again.
"HOWEVER! There was one part of the exam that was intentionally left out from the synopsis of the practical exam. The true mission of a pro hero is to protect those in danger. What kind of hero school would U.A. be if students who displayed this quality were not acknowledged? Out of all the young heroes-to-be who partook in the exam, only two chose to run towards the danger instead of away. You, young Mamoru, are one of those two. For your bravery and ability to protect your fellow examinees, the judges have awarded you rescue points! This brings you to a grand total of…ninety-eight points! That score, in addition to your passing score on the written exam can only mean one thing for you, young man. That's right! You, Kisuke Mamoru, are now enrolled in the Hero Academia!"
"…I made it in." Kisuke whispered as he body trembled. "I'm going to U.A."
"Congratulations, young Mamoru. I look forward to seeing you and your fellow students pave your paths to becoming the awesome, pro heroes I know you will become. Though you have already displayed it once, always remember to go beyond, PLUS ULTRA." All Might proudly encouraged before giving a playful salute and signing off. "See you at school!"
After the video ended, all Kisuke could do was sit on his bed in shock. Finally, after working for so many years, he was going to the hero school he wanted to go to, not the one his uncle decided to send him like he did with his own children. It was so unreal to him, he almost did not believe anything he just heard actually happened. But it did! He was now on the path to becoming a pro hero! Smiling now through his shock, the future hero looked over at his desk and tearfully looked at two separate pictures of him as a child with two adult men laughing alongside him.
"Dad, Grandpa…I'm going to U.A., I'm going to become a hero!"
