He can already feel his skin cracking from how much he’s dried out his hands. Or maybe it’s his heart cracking his body open from the inside out.

She crossed her arms and turned her face to the pillow as if it were the only thing in the room worth her attention, burying her nose in the soft cotton and pressing a heel into the mattress with the petulant grace of someone who genuinely believed they’d been grievously wronged.
