Chapter Text
“Do you want to read this one, Spock?” Amanda asked as she showed him the book, 'That's Not My Dinosaur...'
“Nirsh,” he replied while shaking his head.
“Well, what one do you want to read?” she whispered. “That’s Not My Puppy, That’s Not My Sehlat, or That’s Not My Bunny?” She held the books up for him to choose.
Spock frowned, this was a difficult decision to make, all of the books were more than agreeable. He eventually pointed to the book in the middle, ‘That’s Not My Sehlat.’
“Rom,” Amanda said tenderly. Spock snuggled into his mother as she began to read the story. He then stuck two of his fingers in his mouth. Sarek looked on and frowned, Spock must have inherited the trait from Amanda.
“That’s not my sehlat…
Its tail is too fuzzy,” Amanda read softly.
"Why is there a mouse in the picture?" Sarek interjected.
Amanda turned to her husband and smiled, "I think there is a mouse in all of the stories," she answered.
"Mice do not reside on Vulcan," Sarek replied in a neutral tone. "There is no logic in showing a sehlat beside a mouse." He studied the picture more closely. "The diagram is not to scale."
Amanda sighed. "It is a bedtime story Sarek, the diagrams do not have to be to scale and the content does not need to be scientifically accurate."
Sarek raised an eyebrow. "That is highly illogical."
Amanda put up her hand in a stop sign. "Please Sarek, Spock wants me to read this book to him... The logic is that it will help him to learn to read."
"I have books on my padd that will facilitate Spock's reading... ‘The Teachings of Surak,’ ‘The Vulcan Science Academy Encyclopedia of Science,’ ‘Vulcan Philosophy’ by T’Plana-Hath.”
"Nirsh," Amanda said more strongly. "We are reading this book. Isn't that right, Spock?" She kissed the top of his head.
Spock looked up into his mothers eyes. "Ha," he replied quietly before immediately sticking his fingers in his mouth again. He then turned to examine the book. He used the fingers on his free hand to brush over the tail of the sehlat. “Zihn, fuzzy!” he commented. Once satisfied, he turned the page...
