The Next Step

Summary:

Yang paced outside her bathroom door. Every few seconds she placed her hands on the doorknob, twisting it a bit before letting go and returning to her pacing.

“Babe, you skulking by the bathroom isn’t going to make this go faster,” Blake said. Yang’s pacing increased Blake’s anxiety as she sat on the toilet, staring at the pregnancy test in her hand. “Just two lines, please, “ she whispered.

Notes:

This is just a self-indulgent fic. Blake is nonbinary in this fic and goes by she/they pronouns. Yang is trans masc and goes by she/he pronouns because I'm trans masc and I go by she/he pronouns and I kin her.

Work Text:

Yang paced outside her bathroom door. Every few seconds, she placed her hands on the doorknob, twisting it a bit before letting go and returning to her pacing.

“Babe, you skulking by the bathroom isn’t going to make this go faster,” Blake said. Yang’s pacing increased Blake’s anxiety as she sat on the toilet, staring at the pregnancy test in her hand. “Just two lines, please," she whispered.

Yang took her wife’s advice and sat on her bed while she waited. Her right leg bounced up and down as she tried to distract herself with thoughts of the school dance she had to chaperone tomorrow.

Blake had ironed her suit yesterday, but Yang still felt unsure about wearing it to the dance. The gym the dance is being held at is sure to be hot and stuffy with all the teenagers dancing around. Maybe jeans and a button-up would be better? Either way, Mr. Xiao Long-Belladonna was not looking forward to his students’ teasing.

The bathroom door opened, pulling Yang out of his thoughts. He stood up. “Did it-”

Blake looked at him and nodded, tears in their eyes. “I’m pregnant.”

Yang instantly swept them up in a hug, kissing their face repeatedly. Blake laughed, wrapping their arms around their wife. They both held each other, basking in the fact that there was going to be a plus one in their family soon.

Ruby and Weiss were the first people they told.

Ruby was predictably excited about being an aunt. "I can’t wait to see them! I wonder what they’re going to look like. Do you think they’d have a cute tail or some ears? Oooh, what if they get cool claws like your dad Blake?” She leaned across the table at that last statement, trying to get as close to her sister-in-law as she could.

Blake smiles, amused at Ruby’s excitement, while Weiss shakes her head and pulls Ruby back down to her seat.

“You sound more excited than the actual parents-to-be,” Weiss admonishes Ruby. “Anyway, do you two need anything for the baby? Cribs? Toys? Food? Just ask and I’ll pay for it.”

Blake and Yang chuckle. Yang reaches across the table and grabs Weiss’s hand. “Hypocritical much? You sound just as excited as Ruby.”

Ruby smirks and Weiss scowls.

Blake grabs Wiess’s other hand. She smiles at the heiress. “But we’re glad that you’re willing to help us with this” The faunus looks at Ruby. “Both of you.”

The next people to know were their parents and Qrow.

To make things easier on everyone, Blake and Yang video called all four of them together.

Tai became a crying mess before anyone else could get a word in.

“I can’t believe my baby is going to be a dad! Or mom? Do you have a preference?”

Yang laughed. “Dad, I’m 27 years old. And I think I’m gonna go with both. Whatever our kid wants.”

Qrow smirks. “Your kid, damn, we’re old.”

Tai scowls and wipes the tears from his eyes. “Stop reminding me Qrow. Next thing I know, my grandkid is going to have a kid.”

Kali interjects, “Well, I don’t know about you Tai, but I can’t wait to be a grandma. That way I won’t be bored at home anymore.”

Ghira faux gasps at his wife, “What, am I not entertaining enough for you?”

Kali chuckles and rubs his arm, “My beautiful husband of fifty-five years, you are still very entertaining.”

Blake looks at her mother in disgust, “Mom!” The rest of the group chuckles.

Kali ignores her, “but I’m just saying it would be nice to have a baby around the house to pamper again.” Her husband acquiesces and nods.

Blake and Yang spent the rest of the video call convincing Kali and Tai that no, they don’t need their parents to move into their house to take care of the baby. And no, Qrow can’t teach the baby how to fight with a scythe, Ruby already asked. By the end of the call, Tai already made plans to build his grandkid a crib, and Kali and Ghira planned a trip to Vale to help babyproof their house.

It was the night of the Beacon dance. Yang was already putting on his shoes by the time Blake came out of the restroom. While the blonde had chosen to don just black jeans and an orange button-up shirt, Blake decided to break out their yellow evening gown.

Even after years of marriage, Blake still took Yang’s breath away. As Blake fixed her hair in front of their mirror, Yang lounged back on their bed, looking at his wife with complete adoration.

Blake catches his gaze through the mirror and gives Yang the same look of utter love. They turn and climb onto the bed and lay on top of Yang, careful to not mess up their hair and makeup. Yang wraps her arms around Blake in return.

“You sure you don’t want to stay,” Yang says. “The kids won’t mind if we don’t go.”

Blake chuckles and leans forward to give Yang a kiss. “You promised babe. Plus, I know you love to show off how hot your wife is.”

Yang hums, “so that’s why you pulled out that dress?”

Blake gives her another kiss and another, “yup, didn’t want you to overshadow me. Although I don’t mind showing off my wife either.”

Yang laughs and lets Blake continue to pepper her face with kisses, choosing to just run her hands up and down their back.

Blake pauses after a while and sits up, looking at her partner with furrowed eyebrows. “Yang, what's wrong?”

Yang bites her lip and looks away for a second before looking back at Blake. “It’s just, are you sure about this?”

She gestures to Blake’s stomach.

“What if something goes wrong? Or the pregnancy ends up too much for you? I know you’re strong Blake, but I - “

Blake interrupts her by cupping her cheek and leaning down to bump their foreheads.

“I know you’re scared, Yang, so am I. But it’s not my pregnancy you’re scared of, is it.”

Blakes words stun Yang for a bit until the blonde wraps her arms around Blake again. She closes her eyes and smiles.

“I can’t get anything past you, can I.”

“Nope,” Blake responds.

Yang opens her eyes and finds those amber eyes she loves staring back at her, telling her she’s safe, she’s home.

“What if I’m not good enough for our child? I’m scared I’ll turn out like her, Blake.”

Blake giggles, gets off Yang and the bed, and pulls her wife with her. She leads Yang to their closet, where she pulls out a black tie. As she wraps it around Yang and ties it for her, Blake gives her answer.

“There is no guarantee we’ll be the best parents. We will make mistakes, but we will learn from them just like our parents. But what I can guarantee is you’ll never turn out like her.”

Once the tie is done, Blake fixes Yang’s collar before resting her hands on Yang’s shoulders. They look at him with confidence, confidence in the fact that, like every struggle they’ve gone through before, they’ll get through this together.

Yang still feels scared, but with the way Blake is looking at her, she gains the strength to believe in herself enough that she won’t make the same mistakes Raven did.

Yang sighs and wraps her arms around her spouse's waist. She rests her head on top of Blake’s, her wife’s ears flicking against her cheek as they start swaying.

“What did I do to deserve you?”

“I could say the same thing,” Blake responds. She lets go of Yang and walks to their bedroom door. “Now come on, we're going to miss all the fun!”

“You make it sound like this dance is for us,” Yang laughs and follows her out the door. “Last I remember, we haven’t been teenagers for a while.”

Blake grabs her purse and keys off of the coffee table by their front door. “Well, with the way you’re struggling to grow that beard, you might as well be,” she teases.

Yang pinches her ass for that and Blake squeals as they walk out of their house.

“My beard is magnificent; I'll have you know,” Yang smirks. She watches her wife lock the door before heading to their car.

“Your beard looks like someone drew lines on your face with a sharpie,” Blake smirks back. She unlocks the car and gets in the driver's seat while Yang climbs into the passengers.

Yang strokes her chin. “Don’t worry babe. I’ll have this puppy looking like a viking’s beard before the baby comes.”

Blake rolls her eyes and smiles. “I’ll hold you to that.”

She pulls the car out of the driveway and heads toward Beacon.

Yang pushes the seat back and closes her eyes. She hopes the kids aren’t too rowdy by the time they get there.

“Trust me, my beard will look so good; our kid will be bragging about it to their friends. They'll be saying, My dad’s beard is cooler than your dad’s.”

“And I absolutely can’t wait to brag about your beard at the White Fang meetings.”

“See, you get it!”

Blake laughs. Despite her teasing, Blake does think Yang’s beard is coming along nicely. Their kid is going to have a fun time pulling on it.

Blake rubs her stomach with one hand. I can’t wait to meet you, she thinks. Your dad and I are going to make sure you always feel loved and safe and at home. Hell, your entire family will. I’m pretty sure you’re Auntie Weiss already bought you a mansion. Blake giggles at that thought.

“What’s so funny?”

Blake glances at Yang. “Nothing, just thinking about how I’m going to destroy you on the dance floor tonight.”

“Baby, you know no matter how hard I try to teach you, you still can’t dance. I just hope the baby doesn’t get their dancing skills from you.”

Blake scoffs at that. “If you keep making fun of my dancing, we’ll be divorced before the baby comes.”

“Hah!” Yang slaps her knee and smirks at Blake. “You love me too much to do that.”

“Yeah, yeah I do.”

Notes:

I just think Yang would look sexy with sideburns and a beard.
