Work Text:
“Sergeant” The brunette yelled, almost knocking over an officer twice her size as she hurried through the precinct door. “Sorry I’m late! Still cleaning up from Lindsay’s 30th” she giggled, rolling her eyes ever so slightly.
“Save it.” Platt snapped back; despite its harsh nature, Nadia knew this was good news because she wasn’t mad about her being late. “This came for you.” Articulated the older woman, reaching under the desk to produce a white envelope with the brunette’s name printed on the front.
“What is it?” She questioned innocently, not typically used to receiving anything.
“You’ll see” Platt teased, eyes sparkling ever so slightly “Now get up there and do your damn job!”
And with that, Nadia had already snatched up the letter, grinning as she rushed up the stairs towards the bullpen.
“Look who finally decided to show up!” Erin taunted playfully as Nadia set her backpack down on her desk: it was absolutely packed with heavy criminology books, and no one on the team was quite sure how her tiny body managed to haul all that around all day.
“Hey” the brunette called back, rolling her eyes at her best friend’s joke.
“What ya got there?” Erin asked curiously, making her way towards Nadia’s desk.
“Not sure, Platt said it came for me earlier. She was acting weirdly about it.”
That got the rest of the team interested; Platt acting oddly was enough to perk the ears of anyone in the district, and soon enough, the entire intelligence unit (minus Voight who was doing god knows what in his office) was at the brunette’s desk.
“You not gonna open it?” Erin pressed, implying that she should.
“Oh. Yea right” Nadia replied, fumbling to break the seal and pull the piece of paper out as the team watched her apprehensively.
Her eyes scanned the page rapidly but carefully, ensuring she didn’t miss a single written word. Seconds later, once she reached the bottom, her eyes widened as she discarded the letter on her desk, sinking into a chair. The brunette’s eyes fixated on the pot of purple daisies in front of her as the team tried to read her expression. Erin’s brow furrowed; she had never seen someone in such utter shock before.
“Not gonna read it out for us Decotis?!” Antonio teased, trying to gage if her response was positive or not.
She just blinked, completely lost in her own thoughts.
“I will!” Adam yelled, snatching the paper excitedly. Clearing his throat, he began reading. “Miss Nadia Decotis, this letter is to commend you on being accepted as a recruit to the Chicago Police Department-“
“OH MY GOD” Erin’s scream cut him off.
Jay was the first to clap, with Al, Antonio, Kevin and Adam all following suit as Erin pulled her best friend into the biggest I’m proud of you hug that she had given in her life. Nadia’s dreams were coming true, and she couldn’t help but be over the moon thinking about how hard the brunette had worked and how far she had come since Erin had pulled her off the streets two years ago when she was merely seventeen.
The commotion must have gotten Voight’s attention, because the next thing they all knew he was emerging from his office asking what all the noise was about.
“Nothing Sir.” Nadia responded quickly, jumping up from her chair and concealing her smile behind the professional face she had picked up during her past.
Erin rolled her eyes, and Ruzek struggled to stifle a chuckle catching sight of the detective do this.
“Not nothing.” Erin cut in assertively, shooting a look at the small brunette who was now staring at the floor anxiously, she hated being the centre of attention after all.
“Nadia got recruited Sarge” Adam spat out, unable to contain himself as per usual.
She threw him a glare, followed by a quick punch in the arm.
Voight stared at her for what felt like forever. Her mind was racing with thoughts; she was so excited.
“Proud of you kiddo. Not long until you’ll be back up here joining our unit as an officer now.” There was a certain softness in his voice that told the brunette he meant it, her contagious smile creeping slowly back across her face at the thought of one day joining the intelligence unit for real.
And just like that, her family erupted into clapping and cheering once again.
