Work Text:

"Lucas, you NEED to get a haircut."

Red was leaning over the counter in their kitchen, watching as Lucas came down the stairs in the morning. He knew that Lucas did have long hair, though he rarely saw it when it wasn't spiked up with static PSI energy, the "Jimmy Neutron" hair as some of the younger fighters (Ness) called it, whoever that was. Though today, Red couldn't help but ridicule the poor boy. His hair had grown out in the back, to the point where Lucas had borderline a mullet, and he'd even dyed the tips of his new hair brown.

"Aww, c'mon... you know I hate haircuts, Red..." the shorter boy pouted at him across from the counter as he sat, grabbing an apple and biting into it hungrily.

"And I don't care, I can't let you walk around like that, for your own good." Red reached over the counter to mess with Lucas's hair making the yellow-haired boy recoil away from him.

"But they lean my head over the sink an' it hurts, an' they clip around my neck with the scissors..." Lucas looked down nervously.

Red sighed. "You know they're not trying to hurt you, right? Get your hair wet before we leave and you can skip that first step." he slumped over a bit. Convincing Lucas to do something like this was always an ordeal, but after a bit the other boy seemed to nod before hopping off the stool and heading over to the shower.

Red sat in the waiting area as he watched Lucas be seated in a swiveling chair, albeit nervously as his mustachioed barber draped the chair cloth onto him. The barber noticed Lucas's hair was wet, before shrugging and getting to work with a smile, asking his customer about their day and what kind of haircut he wants.

Red had to thank the man in the green hat who was tasked with cutting Lucas's hair down to size, he could tell that his boyfriend was extremely nervous, though it wasn't exactly an uncommon occurrence. He knew that they let parents come over and hold their child's hands if they were scared during a haircut, but Red didn't want to baby him. He knew Lucas was really quite tough. Though, it might be cute watching him get all flustered and embarrassed if he did that.

Red sighed, bored as he waited for Lucas's hair to retain it's familiar shape. It was down right now, his hair reaching just below his shoulders. He had to admit, he thought it looked really good like that, though the parts Lucas had dyed seemed to remain.

"So, you want-a me to re-dye?" the man working on Lucas's hair asked with a laugh, after the boy had gotten comfortable with the haircut and jumped up (somewhat unadvisedly) in his seat a bit and asked for it.

"Yeah, um... the usual blonde, thanks..." He seemed to meekly suggest, despite being enthusiastic about it a moment before. He let the barber work his hair, returning it to it's familiar yellow color before Lucas hopped out of the chair and thanked him, making Red pay for the haircut. It was his idea after all.

"So you decided to get rid of that brown, huh?" Red asked, tilting his head as they walked over to a deli for something to eat.

"Uh huh, I guess I should thank you for takin' me out..." Lucas smiled up at him. "It was gettin' pretty long... an' my natural color really clashes with the yellow..."

Red gave him a weird look. "Huh? You mean brown?" He said, genuinely puzzled. Lucas looked up at him like he was the stupidest person he'd ever seen.

"Um... no? Do you... think this is my natural hair color?"

"Well, um... yes, yes I did."

"Red... you've seen my family pictures before, no one else in my family is blonde."

Red paused for a moment, his cheeks turning the color of his namesake as he attempted to hide in his hat.

Lucas just giggled at him, taking his hand and smiling.
