It had arrived in early October with a fury of flurries that quickly transformed, without warning, into a barrage of blinding snowbursts. By early December, blizzards blanketed the town’s tired streets with boundless layers of snow above ice above snow (and repeat). When Jackie stopped talking in early March, the spring thaw had only barely announced itself. As piles of compacted ice and snow just barely shed their layers, it seemed to some as if nothing was changing at all.
Unlike the winter’s subtle entrance, Jackie’s mutism appeared seemingly out of nowhere. Almost nothing comes out of nowhere.
Nobody knows the exact moment when Jackie stopped talking - whether her voice faded silently into the night or if it was suddenly stolen from her; that's between Jackie and God Himself.
