Princess

Summary:

The perfect life. The perfect life of a perfect young woman.

Wrong. You keep a secret. Or two? Probably even more but one of them would definitely be worth a mention. A secret that is hard to keep to yourself - how could one truly live happily with such a thing?

Notes:

Hi guys!

I’m very happy that you chose to give my fic a chance, however before we get started I’d like to tell you I was around 15 when I wrote this and English is not my native language.

It’s among my plans to re-read this work but being a procrastinator is a part of my soul.

Love y’all!
Enjoy ✨

Chapter Text

“I would recommend opals or pearls for today. What would you like, Milady?”

You glanced over a long mirror which portrayed your body dressed in an embroidered sky blue dress.

Oh yes, this is exactly what every morning of your life is. A maidservant wakes you up, lies a tray full of food in front of you, leaves your room and doesn’t come back until you ring, then she puts the leftovers away and helps you dress up and put on makeup. You are a literal princess after all.

The perfect life. The perfect life of a perfect young woman.

Wrong. You keep a secret. Or two? Probably even more but one of them would definitely be worth a mention. A secret that is hard to keep to yourself - how could one truly live happily with such a thing?

Your mother was a mermaid, and unlike the official version it definitely was not some princess your father, the King married when his lover told him she is expecting a baby who turned up to be you. Sadly none of the women lived long. Your mother did not make it through the labor with her borrowed human body, because ... well, she certainly would not make it in her true form either.

And your father’s wife died of pox. Heartbreaking, isn’t it? Like some cheesy drama. Truth be told, you have read plenty of those to consider this a snub.

Your heritage would have been no big deal, considering you were born with two legs and no fins, but whenever a drop of water landed on you, the touched part turned into one resembling a water being.

A water being with chaotic magical powers to be more precise ...

And no matter how people adore love stories starring mermaids, they do not like them around. Probably because you resemble a siren too much. Or perhaps simply because you are too much different. A deviation. At least as a witch you can always be sure they would view you as the mean beast.

“Milady?”

“Uh, the opals will be fine for today,” you answered, distracted from your pondering.

“Of course, Madam, I’ll bring you a matching tiara as well.”

That stunned you a bit. Weren’t tiaras just for important occasions? That must mean — oh damn, that means your father is out of palace this week, starting today.

“Thank you, Anna.” you told her fondly while reaching for the necklace.

Few seconds later, she was reaching to the top of your head and placing the elegant little crown on it. Then she stepped back and stated that you look gorgeous and that you still have some time before the audiences you will be supplying your father for the next week.

You just decided on looking outside your window which was rather amusing since your sight had its’ reserves when it came to the distance. You still were able to check on the weather, after all, see how crowded the streets of your town were.

Anyway, the weather was sufficient and the streets were very crowded.

That means a lot of people will come today. Lots of them will say someone stole their money and expect you to give them ideally half of your property, others will probably ramble about the oh so glorious Eternal Fire and how it would be great to give them more support, and let’s not forget about few individuals that will pay you a visit because of the nearby monsters.

You just cannot wait to hear about some Doppler having the audacity to “disguise as one of us, decent people, and live in our towns”.

Or the unknown creature living in the cave on the coast which kills fishermen. It is supposedly huge, glows in the dark and according to some rumor even lays golden eggs...

It would not be an exaggeration to say the creature was becoming quite a legend.
