Work Text:

The first time Heather gets a jump shock welcome from Gwen, it’s late at night. When the camp had settled into that silent stillness and night creatures slowly emerged from their day slumber. The snores had just started to emanate from the cabins and Heather finally managed to shut her eyes when a small utterance of “boo” in her ear sent her shooting upwards. Before she could cry out a hand covered her mouth and in the dark her eyes frantically focused on the person in front of her. Gwen stood there in her own pajama attire, her body was shaking with silent laughter, dark eyes glinting in mirth. Heather immediately snatched away from the girl and hit her on the shoulder to which Gwen held up her arms in defense, grin now in place.

Worried that someone might see them Heather shifted her eyes to the cabin door and gestured with a small nod, Gwen seemed to get the hint and led the way out. The night air was warm but not overly so, it had cooled down a couple degrees since earlier in the day. The pair walked a short way away from the cabins until they hit the picnic tables. There they sat atop the table itself forgoing the seats, their sides pressed together from shoulder to legs. It was a comfortable moment, neither felt the need to move away or necessarily speak just yet. Stars littered the night sky and the moon held high and bright. Heather’s eyes were drawn to them no matter how many times she saw them, and Gwen noticed, watching the way the other girl stared up. With a smile she finally voiced something. “Do you know where the big dipper is?”

As if being stunned out of a small trance Heather turned to meet Gwen’s gaze. “Of course, I do! I’m not a child.” Heather replied haughtily, looking away. The goth shrugged and sighed.

“Okay, I just thought you might’ve been looking for it.” Silence hung between them for a couple beats after that, Heather didn’t mean to always be so defensive. And she really didn’t want to ruin the night with any arguing, so she tried to explain in a much more neutral voice.

“It’s not that. I just live in the city, so the stars aren’t really as bright and full compared to here.” Gwen seemed to perk up a bit at this information, it wasn’t often she learned things voluntarily about Heather.

“Oh, I get that. I used to live in a rural setting up until I turned 9 and when we moved to town the stars weren’t ever the same.” And just like that the pressure was off and Heather felt like it could be a normal conversation again.

“Rural? Like you lived on a farm?” When she asked, her nose wrinkled up in disgust at the thought and Gwen laughed.

“No, more like we lived in the middle of nowhere with only the fields surrounding us.”

Heather couldn’t help but let out a terrified cry. “No!”

Just as fast Gwen retaliated. “Yes!” Their eyes met and it wasn’t long before a small bout of laughter broke out between them. Hesitantly, Heather looked down for a moment and said in a small voice.

“Now, where did you say the big dipper was?” She’s cute. Gwen found herself thinking fondly. The goth complied and began pointing out where it was. Turns out Gwen actually knew where all the constellations were. At some point Heather had yawned and found her head resting quite comfortably on Gwen’s shoulder. So, for a long while they just sat like this, Gwen softly talking and pointing out things in the stars while Heather listened wordlessly, content for once to not say anything.

The next thing Heather remembers is a gentle shaking of her shoulder and when she opens her eyes, she sees a sleepy looking Gwen smiling down at her. “Hey, we should head back. The sun will be coming up soon.” That was when Heather noticed that the sky now was a light blue, stars out of sight but the moon was still visible, going down over the horizon. Damn. They’d been outside for a while. So, on wobbly legs they hopped off the table and made the silent walk back, hand in hand if only because they had spent so long touching that breaking contact so quick would be unnatural. As quietly as they could the pair crept into the cabin where contact between them had to sadly come to an end. Fingers unlaced slowly but once undone it was final. They lay in separate beds, drowsiness and sleep claiming Gwen first but Heather was still awake. Staring at the hand that had been so warm not but a moment ago and she smiled. Night would come again and so would Gwen.

If only she could have known how right she was about that. The next scare comes after everyone has left to eat lunch in the food hall and Heather finds herself making her way back to the girl’s cabin, in search of a certain missing goth. She’s walking past the outhouse when the door bursts open causing Heather to jump and cry out in surprise, her eyes clenched shut. A familiar snicker fills her ears, and two thin arms encircle her waist. Heather scowled and pushed at Gwen’s shoulder, annoyed at her antics. “Seriously? You are so childish.”

“I’m sorry, I didn’t think it was gonna be you. I thought it was Cody, promise!” The twinkle in Gwen’s brown orbs made Heather think otherwise. “Come on.”

“No.” The taller brunette knew what the goth wanted now, and she wouldn’t relent. Crossing her arms, she shifted away on one foot, trying to break free from the goth’s grasp. Said goth tightened her grasp and laughed once more, raising her eyebrows as if to prove innocence.

“Oh, don’t be mad. Please? What if I make up for it?” Turning to face Gwen, her tongue already sharp with a retort, she was cut short by a quick peck from the short girl. Heather’s cheeks burned and Gwen grinned, staring up through her thick black lashes. Looking down Heather noticed that Gwen stood on her tiptoes to reach her and that realization left a warm feeling in the pit of her stomach.
“Why do I feel like that kiss was more for you than me?”

“And what if it was?” She stuck her tongue out, catching Heather off guard and making her laugh in disbelief.

“You’re crazy.” It was as if nothing could sour the goth’s mood however, because unphased her lips quirked upwards.

“About as crazy as the one who came looking for me.” Heather’s eyes widened and she felt the denial rise in her throat but one look at Gwen and she instead opted for an eye roll.

“You wish, I just forgot my chapstick.” She retorted, feigning an interest in anything else. The goth chuckled in response and slowly unwound her arms from the trim waist. As soon as her arms left though, Heather couldn’t help the slight disappointment that hit her. Who the hell said to let go?

“Oh, well excuse me,” Her voice was aloof and light, “And here I thought you might’ve come searching for me. My mistake, go ahead and get your chapstick. I’ll see you later during a challenge or whatever.” That’s the way she wants to play today? What a child. Heather would show her who was in control! This little jump scare business had caught her off guard, but she would be damned if she didn’t fight back! So, Heather stepped forward, closing the space between them. Gwen stepped back on instinct and it sent a warm pool of liquid into her lower abdomen. This was how it was supposed to be, her in control and Gwen out of sorts. A small idea struck her and she was quick to act, pushing Gwen into the tiny space next to them.

“Heather! What are you-“Heather was pretty pleased at being able to shut the goth up with her lips where annoyed, an improvement this little relationship brought that she never thought about. “Mmmph. Heather.” Gwen gasped for air, so she led her kisses down her neck instead, losing herself in the soft feeling of silky skin against her lips.

_________

The busty blonde couldn’t help but notice Heather’s absence had gone unchecked for at least the last 15 minutes. It was starting to worry her, or at the very least make her curious. She figured that it had been long enough and that it was time to go look for the brunette. She’s walking past the outhouse when a certain noise makes her stop. Enough secret make out sessions with Tyler had left her knowing what it sounded like. And there were definitely a couple in the outhouse smooching it up! Curiosity once again getting the better of her she decided to peek, creaking the wooden door open just enough for her to spy. She had to cover her mouth to conceal the gasp that found its way out of her mouth. There in the small space stood Heather and Gwen of all people! Wrapped in a passionate embrace, their eyes closed, and mouths glued to one another.

Gwen’s hands were nestled deeply in Heather’s long raven hair, whose hands were in the back pockets of the goth’s small skirt, pulling their bodies flush against one another. A small moan from Gwen pulls Lindsay out of her trance and she is closing the door, her face hotter than anything.

Quickly she walks back, unable to truly compute what she just saw. What was she going to do the next time she saw Heather OR GWEN?! And just how was she gonna keep this to herself?
