Work Text:
Bucky sat by the large window overlooking New York City, his favorite mug full of coffee in his hand. Behind him was a still sleeping Tony, curled up underneath their covers, letting out soft snores.
Early mornings were Bucky’s favorite. He had always been a morning person, something that had stayed consistent over the years even through college and his partying phase. Now that he had a full-time career as a personal trainer, being an early riser was essential to his job.
Tony, on the other hand, was decidedly not a morning person, something Bucky had quickly found out when they started dating. Unfortunately for him, this did little justice to his job as a college professor.
Although his caffeine consumption made up for the late nights spent going over lectures and the somewhat early morning classes.
So, yeah. Waking up a little earlier than necessary meant that Bucky had time to himself to make a cup of coffee, watch the sunrise, get dressed, and even do some stretches before heading to work. It also meant he could watch Tony sleep, which was one of his favorite things to do.
There was something so peaceful about the way Tony’s face softened in his sleep, his body completely relaxed, face smushed into his pillow with one arm tucked against his cheek. Tony was beautiful in every way, but sleeping Tony was a sight Bucky cherished.
Smiling to himself, Bucky took one last sip of his coffee before walking over to place it in the sink. Pouring the remaining coffee into a thermos for himself, he leaned over to start a fresh pot knowing Tony would need it to get through his long day of meetings.
With the pot of coffee brewing, Bucky walked into the bathroom to begin getting ready, brushing his teeth and washing his face.
As a personal trainer, his morning routine was fairly simple. Wake up, have his cup of coffee while watching the sunrise, start a pot for Tony, wash his face, brush his teeth, and throw on some workout clothes and sneakers.
There was no need to do his hair or pick out an actual outfit seeing as he would get sweaty and need a shower a couple of hours into his workday.
Besides, their apartment was close enough to the gym that he always managed to walk home and eat lunch on his break. One of the perks of owning a gym was the ability to make his own schedule, something he took full advantage of.
Ready for the day, Bucky made his way back to their bed, bending down to brush Tony’s hair out of his face. “Good morning, Baby,” he whispered, kissing Tony’s forehead.
Tony let out a soft groan, blinking his eyes open up at Bucky.
“Mmm,” he mumbled, pulling the covers up higher.
Bucky chuckled. “C’mon Tony, it’s time to get up. There’s a pot of coffee with your name on it,” He tried persuading him.
Tony stared at Bucky for a moment before rolling over, pulling him down onto the bed in one quick motion. With Bucky laying beside him, Tony took the initiative to curl up to him, clearly unwilling to get out of bed.
Blinking in surprise, Bucky looked down at his boyfriend who was doing his best impression of an octopus—his arms and legs wrapped around Bucky with his head on his chest.
“One of those mornings, huh?” Bucky asked rhetorically, running his hand down Tony’s back.
Every once in a while, Tony’s insomnia flared up which made him exhausted in the morning no matter how many hours of sleep he got the night before. On those days, Tony usually went into work late if not taking the whole day off to sleep and let his body recuperate.
Bucky knew Tony’s insomnia was bothering him seeing as even the mention of coffee didn’t arouse him out of bed. With this in mind, Bucky grabbed Tony’s phone off his nightstand and started an email to the head of the science department, letting them know Tony would be absent for the day.
Luckily, Tony didn’t teach classes on Fridays so the only thing he would miss was office hours and lab time which his graduate assistants could more than handle themselves.
With that taken care of, Bucky got comfortable again, resuming rubbing Tony’s back.
“I emailed your office. You can keep sleeping, Baby.”
“Hmm. Thank you,” Tony responded, leaning up to kiss Bucky. “Do you have any appointments this morning?”
Bucky shook his head. “Nope. First one isn’t until noon.”
“Good. Means you get to stay and cuddle with me.”
“Oh I do, do I?” Bucky chuckled, ruffling Tony’s hair.
“Mhm. Can be my snuggle buddy,” Tony mumbled, laying back down on Bucky’s chest, turning his head away from the window to block the light peeking through the tall buildings.
“Gladly,” Bucky said, voice soft with affection.
Reaching over to the nightstand, Bucky used the remote to close the blinds, leaving their bedroom dark. “There, now you can go back to sleep, hm?”
Tony spoke incoherently, already dozing off safe and sound in the warmth of Bucky’s arms.
Comfortable in bed with Tony in his arms, Bucky found himself nodding off to the steady sound of Tony’s heartbeat.
Noting that he had to be at the gym in a few hours, Bucky set an alarm on his phone so he wouldn’t be late for his session.
Setting his phone back down, he scooted down the bed to lay flat on his back, careful to not jostle Tony too much.
“Love you,” Tony mumbled sleepily, burrowing further into Bucky’s chest.
Bucky smiled to himself, knowing just how lucky he was to be living this life with Tony. He had never felt so safe than in this home they had built together.
“And I love you.”
