Summary:

and getting older still

Work Text:

Upon discovering that Atem’s birthday was only two days before Yugi’s put a new kind of stress on Yugi. He wanted to be sure that everything was going to go just right. The easiest way to make sure everything went right was to keep it simple. A simple night in with Atem, watching the movies he’d been meaning to share with him. The VCR was set up and the first movie already queued up. Atem was already waiting on the bed, a curious expression on his face.

“I think I know what I’m doing for your birthday,” Atem said finally, a look of pride appearing on his face. “I’m going to take you out to dinner.”

“Tonight is supposed to be about you,” Yugi protested. Unfortunately, he was well aware that once Atem decided to focus on something, there was hardly any chance of getting him to change tracks. “It’s your birthday tonight, not mine.”

“And your birthday is in two days, partner,” Atem countered. “I think it would be a good idea for me to be prepared for it.”

“And you can worry about that tomorrow night,” Yugi said as he joined Atem on the bed, pulling him in closer. Before Atem could protest, Yugi closed the distance between them and kissed him softly. Atem had no protests with that and Yugi smirked. “For now, let’s focus on the fact that it is your first birthday in what? Three thousand years?”

“You make me sound so old.”

Despite the disapproving tone he used, Atem had a soft smile on his face. “You were there when Punt was still a country,” Yugi pointed out with a teasing grin. A country that Yugi had only just recently learned about to boot. Hearing Atem talk about his life in ancient Egypt fascinated him, even if it did remind him of how truly displaced Atem was. “Face it, you’re old.”

“And getting older still,” Atem laughed, curling up on Yugi. For a moment, all Yugi could focus on was then and there. In this moment, the two of them could simply just exist. It was easy to marvel over the fact that Atem was getting older at all. They'd been so certain that they wouldn't have more than those few years together and now, so many more birthdays stretched out in front of them. The ones that they could spend together. “At least I don’t have to get old alone. I’ve got you.”
