Chapter Text
Bucky had been sleeping quite peacefully, until the sound of gunshots had him erupting from the bed, his own weapon drawn in seconds.
“Doll, stay-.” He stopped when he saw that your side of the bed was suspiciously empty. Immediately his heart started pounding and his instincts told him something was very, very wrong.
Another gunshot had him creeping to the bedroom door. It sounded quiet and far away, where was the breach?
“FRIDAY?”
“Yes Sergeant Barnes?”
“Where are they?”
“Where are who Sergeant Barnes?”
“The intruders FRIDAY.”
“I detect no unwanted entities on the premises.” His spine went ramrod straight, if it wasn’t an intruder, then who was shooting off a gun at 2am?
“FRIDAY, where did the gunshots come from?” He said this while moving down the small hallway, peering into your office and then the kitchen for any signs of trouble.
“The television.”
That stopped him short.
“What?”
“I believe Mrs. Barnes is currently watching a television program about hunting alligators in the common room.”
“You’ve got to be kidding me.” Bucky sighed, leaning against the frame of the kitchen door.
“No.”
“Thank you FRIDAY.”
“Sure thing Sergeant Barnes.”
Shaking his head, Bucky clicked the safety back on his gun and left it on the kitchen counter before heading out to the common room. Sure enough, the tv was on and there you were, stretched out on the long half of the couch.
“What’re you doing up Doll, it’s after two.” He said quietly, leaning over the back of the couch above you.
You startled and gasped, flinging your phone into the air where it whacked Bucky in the forehead before he caught it. His eyes grew wide when he saw what you had been looking at.
“Doll?” He kept looking back from your face to the screen of the phone. His eyes getting wider the longer he had to think about what this could mean.
25 Cute Ways to Tell Your Husband You’re Pregnant…
“See, I couldn’t sleep… 'Morning' sickness is a total lie, you know? I’ve been up every night the last week puking my guts out. Then I figured out if I just laid here on the couch with an ice pack under my neck for an hour or so after the first time, I can get like four solid hours back in bed with you.” She paused to take and breath and reached for the phone.
“I know we haven’t talked about it, and I was still on my birth control I promise, but hey accidents happen when your husband is a super soldier you know? I mean, everything else about you is pretty fucking super, so Super Sperm must be a thing right? But I didn’t know how to tell you…so I started looking for ideas, but everything just seemed too cheesy or stupid. So yeah. Bucky, hunni, you’re not really breathing…” She sat up to look him in the eye.
“Say something?”
Bucky snapped out of it when he saw the scared look on your face. He swallowed thickly and coughed out an attempt at asking the question he never let himself dream of asking.
“You’re pregnant?” You just nodded hesitantly at him, chewing on your bottom lip.
The abrupt, joyous laugh that came out of Bucky next was not what you were expecting. Suddenly, Bucky was throwing himself over the back of the couch and pulling you into his arms. Tears were sliding down his cheeks but he was smiling so wide you thought your heart would burst with the joy of just seeing it.
“We’re going to have a baby?” He whispered to you, his hands cupping your face.
“Yeah hunni, we are, well, two of them actually.” You muttered in return, reaching blindly for the phone you’d lost in the commotion. A moment later you had the photo pulled up of the first ultrasound.
“I didn’t know she was going to do an ultrasound at the appointment, and then she was telling me to undress and well, you know. But these are our babies Bucky, and you’re coming to the next appointment. It’s in three weeks and so help me if someone tries to pull you on a mission and you miss it.”
He stopped paying attention after “these are our babies…”. They didn’t look like much this early, just tiny little beans, but they were your babies. He had never felt so happy, never thought he could. But you had given him so much to be happy about, helped him find so much joy in his life again, and now? Now you were giving him the greatest gift he could ever ask for.
The next morning, the rest of the team found you both wrapped up her burrito blanket on the couch, Bucky’s left hand splayed out protectively over your stomach…
